20171109 Victoria Palms Halloween contest 2

Winter Texans at Victoria Palms Resort went all out with their costumes for the Halloween Bash and dance.

Halloween marks the start of the social season at many of the larger parks in the Rio Grande Valley and Victoria Palms is no exception. Early arriving Winter Texans joined year-round residents by showing up in costumes and dancing the night away to the music of Danica for the park's Halloween bash.

Costumes ranged from witches to warlocks, and a variety of colorful costumes including a “molting rooster” who kept losing his tail feathers, and a pink bunny reminiscent of the Energizer Bunny. Park Manager Lori Fanaselle said the party is always the beginning of the new season.

Age was no deterrent to the fun as 97-year-old Lorraine Johnson arrived dressed as a Good Witch. She was escorted by her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Marshall Vytlas. Originally from Nebraska, the trio decided they did not like the cold weather and now make their home year-round at Victoria Palms.

Winners of the Halloween Bash costume competition included John and Janine St. John (at left), second place; 97-year-old Lorraine Johnson as a Good Witch and her son-in-law Marshall Vytlas as the joker (center), first place; and Wayne and Sharon Blindaver as a beekeeper and pot of flowers, third place (at right).

Two of the most unique costumes were two Hershey bars, one plain and one with nuts, worn by John and Janine St. John of Surprise, Ariz. Other costumes included German dancers, a spirit of Halloweens Past with her pumpkin man escort, The Flinstones' Barney carrying his club and escorting Wilma, a beekeeper with his pot of flowers, and other creative costumes.

At the end of the competition the 97-year-old Good Witch (Lorraine Johnson) and her “Joker” escort, Marshall Vytlas, won first prize. Second went to the Hershey bars, John and Janine St. Jean. The beekeeper and his pot of flowers, worn by Wayne and Sharon Blindaver of Missouri took third.
