Winter Texans have been mailing their Valley Star Award ballots and using the online ballot at www.wttrgv.com to vote for their favorite entertainers. The ballots have been coming in at a stead rate, and are being counted now as the cut-off date was Tuesday.

Saturday night a large crowd is expected to gather at Mission Bell Resort where the winners will be announced. But in addition to announcing the winners, there will be some great entertainment from new entertainers to the Valley and from some entertainers who have previously won the honors. It promises to be a great event.

20160218-Southern-Anthem-DY-WEBOne of the most popular entertainers to perform is Leslie Blasing, who has been voted Female Vocalist of the Year for the past three years.   She was also named Entertainer of the Year in 2014 and 2015.

Rolando Reyes and his new quartet, 4 His Glory, known primarily for their gospel music will be among the entertainers. Their great voices and harmony make them a favorite wherever they go.

This year Gordy & Debbie, who have won the Duet Musical of the Year for four years in a row, will be among the entertainers. They were nominated again this year, but we won’t know until Saturday if they can make five years in a row. Look for some George Strait, Country Western and 50’s rock and roll from them.

J. C. Harrisson, a new entertainer in the Rio Grande Valley who has been filling performance halls wherever he performs, sings primarily Classic Country. His Hank Williams tributes sound very authentic and he has the ability in many cases to sound like the original artist when singing other top hits. This is his first year to be nominated.

Johnny Ray Gomez is also a new performer in the Valley. Last year, when he played in the Entertainers’ Showcase, activity directors went running to book him and he came back this year to a line-up of 57 shows in different parks. Gomez is an accordion-playing comedian.

Southern Anthem Band is nominated for Family Group of the Year for the second time. The group consists of the Pausewang family, Wendy, Derek, Mikaela and Logan, and they are back and better than ever. Logan, who is now 11, plays his fiddle like a pro. Mikaela has developed a more grown-up voice. Derek tells the jokes. This is one of those families everyone loves to watch grow up. And there is a new performer. The three-year-old little sister has sung songs at some of the park performances.

With such a diverse group of entertainers, it is sure to be a great show. That makes learning whom the Winter Texans voted as their favorites for this year an added bonus.
