20171102 taco tuesdayThe Winter Texan season has just begun. We are seeing cars and trucks with Iowa, Minnesota or Quebec license plates. There definitely are signs that the Winter Texans are arriving in the Rio Grande Valley.

One of those delicious signs this past Tuesday was a wonderful aroma wafting from the rec hall at Sleepy Valley Resort in Mission. Just the smell of the acclaimed “Best Charro Beans in the Valley” was good enough to at least earn that distinction and be placed on a ballot for voting somewhere. If there are no charro bean competitions around, there should be.

Held every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Taco Tuesday at Sleepy Valley is already bringing the Winter Texans in by storm. The previous week there were about 50 to attend the all-you-can-eat treat for $5. On this day, at about 12:40, there were already 108 people served. Yes, Taco Tuesday is a popular event at Sleepy Valley, located at 2301 North Abram Road in Mission. On one Taco Tuesday last year, the four-person team who prepares and serves up the meal, served plates to a little more than 250 people.

20171102 TacoTuesday 2“Every one of us has a job,” said Missouri native Debbie Taylor, who has lived in Sleepy Valley for six years and is the resort activities director. “We work as a team.”

People lined up for a bowl of the amazingly tasty charro beans and a plate of crunchy shell tacos. The fixins were lined up on a table where people could add lettuce, cheese, tomato, onion, jalapeno, hot sauce, taco sauce and sour cream to their tacos (some of them added some of it into their beans as well).

Joseph Lockhart of Ontario, Canada was sitting at a table, enjoying his first week -ever - as a Winter Texan. He said he was working back home in April when someone walked into his store and said they had just returned from Texas for the winter. Lockhart asked where in Texas, and the response was “Mission.” So he looked up the RV and mobile home park online and said he thought it would be a good fit. He's the first renter of the year for Sleepy Valley Manager Glenna Clark, in her eighth season managing the park and 11th overall living there. She said that she is ecstatic about the upcoming year.

20171102 TacoTuesday3“We are going to be busy,” she said. “I like to keep my open spaces to under 100 and already we have only 103 remaining. That's just a wonderful sign and we're excited about that.”

As they get the word out to more folks about their fabulous Taco Tuesday, they may just set all sorts of records for attendance in the park – and for people being served their delicious beans and crispy tacos.
