20170228 National Quilt Museum 1Starting Jan. 11 through Feb. 18 the geese will be flying at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum when the display of quilts from the National Quilt Museum in Paduca, Kentucky go on display. The theme for this year is “Flying Geese,” a pattern that uses triangles representing the shape of a flock of flying geese in the quilts.

According to Forest Garling, volunteer and gift shop coordinator, the museum has been having this display every year since 2007 and it is one of the most popular exhibits the entire year. This year there are 19 quilts in the exhibit that use the flying geese pattern in some way.

20170228 National Quilt Museum 2The first place quilt was created by Susan Morgan of Mobile, Ala. Her quilt “Migration Patterns” features Flying Geese blocks in an asymmetrical and off-parallel layout considered to be an “completely fresh approach” to quilt design.

Second place went to Robin Gausebeck of Rockford, Ill. “Saturday Night at a Honk-y-Tonk Saloon” features brightly colored Flying Geese on a black background.

The team of Judy Stokes and Coleen Eskridge of Columbus, Miss. took third place with their quilt, “Soaring to New Heights,” which was inspired by photos of a military air show they found on the Internet.

20170228 National Quilt Museum 5Fourth place went to Leslie Johnson of Arvada, Colo. who created,” I Don’t Know If I’m Coming or Going.”   Flying Geese wander from a missing corner of this quilt, “We’ve all had days like that,” states the creator.

Fifth place went to “Jacob’s Plumage” by Patricia A. Hobbs of Macomb, Illinois. The quilt features Flying Geese that become the feathers under the wings of a large goose with an attitude.

Other finalists included “On the Wings of Eternity” by Jean Brueggenjohann of Columbus, Mo.; “Welkom Nederland” by Tere D’Amato of Mashpee, Mass. and “Destination Unknown” by Mary Kay Davis of Sunnyvale, Calif.

20170228 National Quilt Museum 7Look for “Celebration” by Gail Garber of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; “Twirly Birds” by Julia Graber of Brooksville, Miss., and “Poursuite d’oie sauvage a Paris” (Wild Goose Chase in Paris) by Charlene Hearst of Toronto, Canada.

Other quilts include “Fly Away Home” by Anita M. Kaban-Neef of Cary, Ill.; Silly Goose by Chris Lynn Kirsch of Watertown, Wis. and “Glad Plaid Goose Dance” by Ann L. Petersen of Surprise, Ariz.

The final quilts are “Goosy Lucy@ the Improve” by Katie Pidgeon of Toronto, Canada; “Chilly Goose No Feathers” by Alicia Sterna of Surprise, Ariz. and “Farm Alarm” by Sue Turnquist of Tifton, Ga.

20170228 National Quilt Museum 3Garling said his personal favorites were the fifth place quilt, “Jacob’s Plumage,” by Patricia A. Hobbs, and the “Welkom Nederland,” by Tere D’Amato. Make plans to visit the museum while the show is ongoing.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no set admission but donations are requested. The museum is located at 2425 Boxwood Drive in Harlingen.
