UTRGV presents ‘The Life and Times of Winter Texans’

UTRGV University Productions will present “The Life and Times of Winter Texans,” a collection of eight original sketches by Eric Wiley. In this collection, Wiley, author of the hit comedy “Late Bloomers,” takes a humorous look at the Rio Grande Valley’s colorful, sometimes cantankerous winter visitors.

Zoo Nights & Lights Dec. 2-4

Zoo Night & Lights, a time honored Brownsville Christmas celebration, will be held Dec. 2-4 at the Gladys Porter Zoo, 500 Ringgold Street in Brownsville.

The paths of the zoo will once again be lit with approximately 800 luminarias as visitors make a nighttime visit to the zoo. In addition, the zoo will be aglow with about 150 lighted animal and holiday themed decorative figures located throughout the zoo.

Valley Symphony Orchestra presents A Touch of Frost holiday classics concert on November 18

McALLEN—The Valley Symphony Orchestra’s popular “A Touch of Frost” holiday concert is set to begin at 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 18, at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Performing Arts Complex in Edinburg. Special thanks go out to Frost Bank for supporting this holiday tradition for over eight years. The perfect way to ring in the season, guests will be able experience holiday favorites featuring the Valley Symphony Chorale directed by David Means, and Mariachi Aztlán directed by Frank Loera. The concert will also feature renowned tenor, David Sadlier.

King Ranch Hand Breakfast offers much more than biscuits and gravy

The famed King Ranch invites visitors to come out and enjoy an authentic, hearty, cowboy breakfast, cooked and served outdoors at the Annual Ranch Hand Breakfast.

The breakfast will be held on the King Ranch, located of S.H. 141 in Kingsville. Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Admission is $6 per person.

Xtreme Bugs invade IMAS

A new exhibit that started October 8 and will run through March 20 asks the question, “What if the ant crawling on your counter, the spider in the doorway, or the butterfly in your garden was the size of your car?” This new exhibition questions the physical characteristics you would notice and behaviors you would observe.

This is a 6000-square-foot exhibit features over100 giant bugs, including 22 massive animatronic bugs in vibrant natural habitats.

Learn about super organisms, insect migration and hibernation, and solitary predators with hissing cockroaches, a tarantula, a fluttering Monarch butterfly, a ladybug and a line of marching ants and more.

Sounds like a great place to take visiting grandchildren. Admission to IMAS is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 4 to 12. This Xtreme Bugs exhibit has an additional $8 fee with no re-entries.

World Champion Shrimp Cook-off is Nov. 6

The 23rd annual World Champion Shrimp Cook-off will be held in Port Isabel on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The annual festival is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. There will be shrimp to suit everyone’s taste from boiled, broiled, fried, baked and special shrimp dishes from which to make selections.

UTRGV Theatre Schedule announced

University Productions of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg has announced its 2016-2017 theatre production schedule.

“Antigone,” is a classic Greek tragedy, where a women who defies the law of the King (who is also her uncle) by standing up for her personal rights and convictions. This time-honored classic, written by Sophocles, will be presented on the Mainstage November 16-20.
