20170323 OnionBlossom2a 2The 28th Annual Texas Onion Fest is scheduled for Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The festival will be held at Mayor Pablo G. Pena City Park located at 300 N. Airport, Weslaco.  Texas Onion Fest celebrates the development of the world famous Sweet Texas Onion in Weslaco at the Texas A&M University Extension Service.  The festival brings the community together for a fun-filled day of onion eating contests, cooking demonstrations, recipe contests, entertainment and much more. 

20170323 OnionFest OnionFest BoGarza2Live entertainment is scheduled at the Hermes Music Stage and the Frost Bank Stage all day Saturday.  Attendees will enjoy the sounds of oldies, salsa, jazz and conjunto on the Main Stage with musical acts including Hot Rodz, Ache de Barrio, Starlight Quartet, Texas Sweethearts, Epi Martinez and Texas Dezire.  The evening’s headlining entertainment kicks off with Texas country singer and RGV native Bo Garza and legendary Nashville star Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band.

Always a crowd favorite, Rancho Caballo de Pura Raza Azteca will be performing at 1:30 and 3:30 pm at the H-E-B Charro Arena, featuring dancing horses.  Live cooking demonstrations and the Onion and Salsa recipe contests will be held at the AEP Texas Culinary Center.  Returning this year is Weslaco’s own Lamar Jones, creator of Jank BBQ Sauce, who will be one of the featured cooks.

20170323 OnionFest StarlightThe Knapp Medical Center Healthy Family Area will present health information, screenings and health-related games.  The Frost Stage will feature crowd favorite Donna’s Line Dancing, the famous Onion Eating Contest, the magic of Oscar Muñoz and karaoke in the evening.

20170323 OnionFest TexasSweetheartsAdmission for adults is $10, $5 for children.  Ages 3 and under get in free.  Plenty of free parking will be available at the park, through the Airport Drive entrance.  To purchase tickets, visit www.topboxtickets.com or call 1-800-514-3849.  You can also purchase them at Hermes Music, the Boot Jack, Ticket Zone in Edinburg, and Carlito’s Wine House in Harlingen.
