The Palmview High School Interact Theater and Lobo Choir will present the Broadway musical “Hairspray” at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center, 604 N. Coyote St., La Joya, for two consecutive weekends.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 and 17; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday Nov. 11 and 18; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 and 19.

The American musical, based on the 1988 film “Hairspray,” is about a plump teen, Tracy Trunblad and her dream to dance on a local television dance show. The girl makes the show, goes viral – well, not then in the 60s, but she becomes an overnight sensation and life is different forever.

The music, which includes 60s style dance and rhythm and blues, was written by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and the book is by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan.

The Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including best musical in 2003. The show performed on Broadway for 2,642 performances before closing Jan. 4, 2009.

Tickets are $7 each and will be sold at the door only, one hour prior to show time. Credit cards and debit cards will not be accepted. Call Joy Navarro at (956) 323-2895 for more information.
