20171221 Lindley Creek 2098Katie Greer probably doesn't remember the first time she picked up an instrument, just like she doesn't remember the first time she took a step or said her first word. Those distinctions, however, aren't far apart in dates.

Greer, 20, is the lead singer for Lindley Creek, an acoustic family band from Missouri showcasing, according to their website, “beautiful, traditional bluegrass and gospel music, soulful, soaring lead vocals, soothing family harmonies, intricate instrumental breaks and original songwriting, Lindley Creek presents compelling acoustic music and a sincere family sound.”

The band has returned to the Rio Grande Valley with a bustling schedule. They started visiting South Texas in 2010.

“This is our eighth year and we love it here,” said Kathie Greer, the mom of the four person group that includes her daughter Katie, son Jase and husband John. “It's laid back, the weather is wonderful and we love hanging out with the Winter Texans.”

Katie said that her daughter started playing instruments when she was four. She first stepped on stage when she was 10. “She doesn't remember not playing music,” Kathie said.

Now Katie is the group’s lead singer who plays the mandolin, electric guitar and fiddle. Also a budding songwriter, Lindley Creek includes some of her original compositions in their repertoire. She is always working on new song ideas by making notes on her phone then she’ll pick up the guitar and get to work completing a new song. She cites Allison Krauss, Carrie Underwood, Tori Kelly and Mandisa as her vocal inspirations.

Jase, 22, plays the fiddle, cello, saxophone, electric guitar and more. He will sing lead vocals and oftentimes harmonize with his sister.

Kathie said they love to make people laugh. With their Christmas show, she said, there's a Santa bit that comes out with the purpose of doing that. “We like to do originals and make sure when people leave, they are having a good time – maybe feel a little less burdened.”

An interesting fact with the band is that Kathie and John didn't start learning to play until the children did, so they could all play at the same time. The strategy has worked wonderfully for them.

“We change up our shows every year and we are in the process working our show for the first of the year. Right now we are doing an all Christmas, holiday and winter show, old-time Christmas. When we play 'My favorite things' it's a really cool mountain sound. Being from the Ozarks, we like that.”

The group is especially gearing up for the Faith, Family, Freedom combination event with two other family bands, Williamson Branch and the Punches Family. The event will be held at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Jan. 25 at Winter Ranch in Donna.

“We have been doing it down here for seven of the past eight years,” Kathie said. “It's a big deal for us and a great event.”
