Hole-in-One: Win a Car

Catholic War Veterans Post 1065 Mission will be hosting the “Armed Forces Veterans Golf Tournament,” and the public is invited. The Post is seeking sponsors and teams for the fundraising event scheduled on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Mission Shary Golf Course, 1900 N. Mayberry. It will be a three-man team tournament with door prizes, drawing, food and more. The hole-in-one prize is a car donated by Bert Ogden Mission. National Butterfly Center draws media attention

2016 National Butterfly Center LEG5067 SHOWMarianna Wright, CEO of the National Butterfly Center (NBC) in Mission told the Mission City Council in their Monday, Oct. 10, meeting, the Butterfly Center is drawing favorable attention to Mission as the time for the Texas Butterfly Festival draws near.

Wright said many species of butterflies, including the endangered Monarchs could be expected in South Texas during mid- to late October through mid-November, which is the peak of butterfly season.

Magic Valley Chorus Annual Show is Feb. 21

Magic Valley Chorus of Sweet Adelines International will present its annual spring show “Black and White and Read All Over” on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at PSJA High School Performing Arts Center. The school is located on Veterans Blvd (I Rd) and Ridge Road in San Juan. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door and are available from any chorus member and also at the Alamo Chamber of Commerce.

Laughing Bird flying high in RGV

Get ready for some laughs and original music as Tupelo and Janey Wing Kenyon return to the Rio Grande Valley for another round of entertaining shows. The couple has worked together since 1978 when they met in Alaska. Since that time they have traveled all over the United States and a good bit of the world having done tours in South America, Europe and Asia.

Harlingen Concert Association announces new season

The Harlingen Concert Association has several offerings for the Winter Texan season.

On Jan. 7, Svetlana Smolina, pianist will present a concert. Smolina’s performances have been called “mesmerizing” by the New York Times.

On Jan. 21 a totally different type of music will be presented when the Presidio brass comes to town. The show is a wild ride of blazing technique and seamless precision, according to the Ponca City News in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Look for Savannah Jack on Friday, Feb. 19. These musicians are high-energy, featuring music from all genres with tight harmonies.

MOSTHistory plans Christmas celebration

Winter Texans are invited to attend Fiesta de Noche Buena from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory), 200 N. Closner in Edinburg.

Fiesta de Noche Buena is a Spanish phrase translated as “party of good night” and refers to a traditional Christmas Eve feast after a religious mass that is observed in Mexico. Among the holiday foods and decorations are poinsettias, also known as noche buenas, which are indigenous to Mexico. The legend associated with the poinsettia, or noche buena, is that of a poor Mexican girl who presents weeds to the infant Jesus that miraculously turn into beautiful red flowers – noche buenas.

Symphonic Band presents ‘Sounds of the Season’

The McAllen Symphonic Band will present “Sounds of the Season” Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Center Church (formerly Trinity Worship Center), located at 4801 N. Cage, the intersection of Exp. 281 and Nolana. The concert will be under the direction of Roger Olivarez, conductor.

Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at all Wilder Resorts, the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce, and at McAllen Community Centers and at the door the evening of the program, if available.

RGV Concert Band hosts Christmas concert

A Christmas concert in McAllen gets the Rio Grande Valley Concert Band off to a “Merry, Merry Christmas” and a fun start to their 2015-16 concert season.

The Dec. 13 concert will be held at 3 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, located at 1105 Fern, in McAllen. It is a “thank you” to the church for allowing the band to practice there each Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Port Isabel Lighted Boat Parade is Saturday

Boats of all sizes, from kayaks to yachts, will participate in Port Isabel’s 28th annual Lighted Boat Parade Saturday, Dec. 5 beginning at 6 p.m. along the shores of the Laguna Madre. Boats will begin at Southpoint Marina where participants will be judged. Then they will make their way across the Laguna Madre to South Padre Island’s Bayfront, then ending at Louie’s Backyard for final judging.

Laguna Art League to hold Christmas sale

The Laguna Madre Art League will hold its annual Christmas Show and Sale of Fine Art and Crafts made by local artists and craftsmen Dec. 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show will be held at the Port Isabel Community Center, located at 213 Yturria St. (behind the library).

Award winning artists Carol Thorson, Marne Law, Thomas Leeman, Peggy Paris, and Carol Plumb will be selling original paintings, prints and cards. All sorts of art from oil to watercolor are reasonably priced and come in all sizes to fit into that empty space on the walls.

Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade deadline nears

Several Winter Texan RV parks participate in the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges each year, and the Fiesta wants to extend an invitation to other parks to have a parade entry this year.

The 79th annual Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges will kick off Saturday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. This year’s TCF theme is “Citrus, Cartoons & Comic Book Characters.” The deadline to turn in applications for prior year parade entries is Dec. 8, and for new parade entries the deadline is Jan. 14, or until the maximum number of entries is reached. The $40 entry fee must be turned in with the application.

Split Rail Jams begin Nov. 20

Winter Texans looking for a jam where they can participate may join the fun at Split Rail RV Park, 513 N. Los Ebanos Road in Mission on Friday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m. Jams will be held each Friday at 1 p.m. through the season.

John and Sara Weilmiller will start the new season of jams. Erven Bertrand will join a little later in the season. Come out and join in memorializing Gary Legrid and his music.

Join the Vipers Winter Texan Club

The Rio Grande Vipers are back with a full schedule of games stretching from Nov. 13 to April 2. The Vipers, who are an NBA Developmental League team for the Houston Rockets, will play teams from Austin to Maine and many locations in between during the season. The opening game on Nov. 13 is against the Idaho Stampede. There will be a total of 26 home games this season.

Ranch Hand Festival coming to Kingsville

Anyone who would like to sample an authentic cowboy breakfast on the largest ranch in South Texas should make plans to travel to Kingsville on Nov. 21 to enjoy a the Ranch Hand Breakfast cooked outside over a campfire on the historic King Ranch.

Breakfast will consist of eggs, biscuits and gravy, tortillas, sausage, refried beans, juice and gallons of hot coffee. Standup tables or hay bales will be provided for the meal. Tickets for this meal and for the entertainment following it are $6 per person. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m.
