The Winter Texan Activities Association (WTAA) is a volunteer-run association that has been organizing fun activities for Winter Texans in the Mission area for the past 30 years.

But, as it goes with many organizations today, they need a fresh crop of volunteers to help keep the organization running.  Sharon Northedge, president of the association, said the board was considering dissolving the association due to a lack of people to help run the events they put on each year. But after meeting with Jim Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times, decided to hold on a little longer and try to muster some help.

Events held this year by WTAA included the annual golf tournament at Shary Municipal Golf Course, the Cabaret Dance held at Mission Bell Resort, the craft show held at Bentsen Grove RV Resort, a pool tournament, bowling tournament and shuffleboard tournament.

While there is still strong interest and participation in the activities, Northedge was the one who had to shoulder planning most of the events this year. The board needs volunteers to serve as event chairmen so one person does not have to carry all the load.  Also needed are active park representatives, whose role is to come to the monthly WTAA meetings, helping plan the events, then going back to their parks to promote those events with their park residents. Park reps should also help coordinate their park’s schedule of events to avoid too many conflicts with the schedule of WTAA activities. The park representatives could be park activity directors, or any member of the park.

There are perks for park reps, such as free tickets to the annual Cabaret Dance, which is growing in demand since the board decided to bring in a band that plays rock ‘n roll along with other music.

Participating parks must pay annual dues to the association in the amount of only $20 so their park residents can participate in the various activities.

Currently, 25 Mission area RV & MH parks are dues-paying members of the association, and Northedge would like to see that number grow.  More participants means more fun for all.

This year’s participating parks include Bentsen Grove, Bentsen Palm, Bluebonnet, Canyon Lake, Chimney Park, Circle T, Fiesta Village, Heritage Square, Hidden Valley Ranch, Leisure Valley Ranch, Pleasant Valley Ranch, Restful Valley Ranch, Mission Bell/ Trade Winds, Split Rail, Sunlight MH Park, Tropical Valley Acres, Twin Lakes, W&I Resort, Wagon City South, Wintergreen Estates, Aladdin Villas, Green Gate Grove, Rollin Homes, Valley View Estates, Mobile Garden, and Oleander Acres.

If your park is not participating, talk to your park manager or park activity director and see if you can gather enough interest from other park residents to become members of WTAA and help them keep a good thing going. Better yet, let’s build it up with more parks participating and lots of volunteers to help organize and run the events.
