Pancakes galore!

The large griddle allows cooking of up to 24 pancakes at a time at Lemon Tree’s pancake dinners. Lemon Tree RV Inn held their first Thursday night pancake dinner of the season on Nov. 30 with a crowd of about 100 people coming to eat. Gwen Baker, of Iowa, said at the height of the season there will be up to 350 people each Thursday.

Getting into the spirit of the season, greeter Naomi Olson of Vermont was dressed as a Christmas present. (She changes her costume weekly so go and see what she is wearing.)

The meal is a bargain, costing only $2.50 for pancakes and coffee. Applesauce, eggs, sausage and ham could be purchased to go with the meal for an additional $0.25 each.  Many people were choosing to add eggs or meat to their meals but the crew in the kitchen had them ready and the line kept moving efficiently.

Darrell Gullickson, of South Dakota, who was running the dinner, told the Winter Texan Times the park had been doing the dinner for as long as he remembered.  I told him it was at least 40 years because my father and step-mother, Bill and Ernestine Gerald, had lived there when they first became Winter Texans, and I could remember taking my young children over there for pancake dinners.  Now I have great-grandchildren!

Gullickson laughed and said things had improved since the early days when pancakes were cooked in electric skillets. Now the park has a special grill that can cook up to 24 pancakes at a time in just a couple of minutes. That helps keep the line moving smoothly.

Others were serving coffee and taking orders.

Gullickson then asked me if my children were still in the area.  I said one daughter lived here along with her two sons, one of which had three children. He invited me to bring them all back one day for pancakes and a picture of the four generations eating Lemon Tree RV Inn pancake dinners.
