Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day celebrated

20120216_MOSTH_PioneerDays_Leo-LopezWhere can you go to experience original cowboy music and witness artisans creating authentic handmade crafts using the same techniques that Texas pioneers used 150 years ago? You’ll find all this and more at the Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day this weekend. The popular annual event will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum of South Texas History.

Milking a dairy cow, shoeing a horse, and exploring an authentic teepee are just some of Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day favorites. Watch and learn traditional skills from weavers, a farrier, Native Americans, quilters, wood carvers, and more.

New this year, will be some tasty foods that the vaqueros (Spanish for cowboys) along the border ate while on the trail. This includes items such as pan de campo or cowboy bread, chuck wagon bears and freshly churned butter. Visitors may also enjoy traditional menudo or tripe soup, tamales, and aguas frescas or fresh fruit waters.

Also, don’t forget to wear a favorite pair of dancing boots. The Gillette Brothers are back again this year to make visitors tap their toes to the beat of their signature brand of cowboy music.

Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day is included in the fee for regular museum admission. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens 62 and older.

The Museum of South Texas History is located at 200 North Closner Blvd., on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square in downtown Edinburg.
