New Year’s Eve celebrations Ladies enjoy chocolate, Bar-B-Q This year has been a long one for everyone, and most people are looking forward to seeing what 2022 has in store for them. Be sure to check out our Parks Calendar for events that are taking place at parks. I know these events fill up fast, so hopefully you have tickets to go some where to celebrate and start off the New Year. While there are many traditions around the globe, the huge one is seeing fireworks shows throughout the world. We could only find a few that are being advertised, which I have included here, but I am sure cities throughout the Rio Grande Valley are holding celebrations and fireworks. So be on the lookout in your city, on their websites, and their Facebook pages. South Padre Island If you are looking to ring in the NewYear, why not spend it on South Padre Island? Leave all the worries of the past year behind, and start the year refreshed on Texas’ only tropical island. There will be many activities happening New Year’s Eve, but the highlight will be the fireworks display being held on the gulf side at 9 p.m. Most of the restaurants and bars will be staying open late to allow visitors to experience the island way of ringing in the New Year. Another popular activity on New Year’s Eve are the buffets at the hotels and the wide span of entertainment. With plenty of options, you can enjoy New Year’s Eve by the beach or the bay. The event will be held at the Pharr downtown Park from 7:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. Admission is free for everyone and they will have a live musical performance by The Spazmatics and fun for everyone. Submitted by Arleen Bier The Rio Grande Valley is filled with fun and exciting things to do. Each month, the Ladies of La Floresta venture out to learn more about the Valley and its people. Past outings included museums, holiday displays, an art gallery, and a boot factory. It also gives the ladies an opportunity to check out the many excellent restaurants that are available in the area. In December, the Ladies of La Floresta, toured Mozna Chocolate factory in Hidalgo. As you enter the factory, the smell of chocolate fills the air. We couldn’t wait for the taste testing. But first, we learned about the process of converting the cacao beans to smooth, rich, dark chocolate, and the health benefits of dark chocolate. Then we each were able to create our own specialized chocolate bar. Following the tour, we had lunch at Black Diamond Bar-B-Q, also in Hidalgo. The loaded potatoes and brisket sandwiches were delicious. The Ladies Day Out was organized by Karlene Weiland of Mercedes.
