Special reading at Quinta Mazatlán Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host author and poet Katherine Hoerth on Thursday, January 6th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a night of eco-poetry and special reading/ book signing of her most recent publication Prairie Madness on the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán. A Rio Grande Valley native Katherine Hoerth grew up amidst the dense South Texas Brush Country in McAllen. Just a toss of a cowboy hat from the border, this little corner in the deep south has inspired Katherine in her journey as a renowned poet. She beautifully captures the culture of South Texas and paints a lasting image of one of the most biologically diverse regions in the country, our humble home, the Rio Grande Valley. Katherine Hoerth is the author of five poetry collections including Flare Stacks in Full Bloom (Texas Review Press, 2022, forthcoming) Borderland Mujeres (SFA University Press, 2021, forthcoming), Prairie Madness (North Dakota State University Press, 2021), and Goddess Wears Cowboy Boots (Lamar University Literary Press, 2014). She is the 2015 recipient of the Helen C. Smith Prize for the best book of poetry in Texas and the 2021 Poetry of the Plains Prize from North Dakota State University Press. Her work has been published in numerous literary magazines including Summerset Review, Valparaiso Review, and Southwestern American Literature. She is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and in 2017 joined the English department at Lamar University as an Assistant Professor of creative writing and Editor-in-Chief of Lamar University Literary Press. Hoerth’s most recent publication Prairie Madness won the 2021 Poetry of Plains and Prairies Award from North Dakota State University Press. This collection of poems takes the reader through the experience of being in a new environment while adjusting to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. The book is handmade and limited edition. It was made using antique letterpress equipment by the publishing students at North Dakota State University. Each book has real dried wildflowers pressed on the cover, so each one is unique. Books will be available for sale at Quinta Mazatlán following the program. Join Quinta Mazatlán for a special reading of “Valley Nature Poetry with Katherine Hoerth” this Thursday January 6th at 6p.m. Tickets are $5 per person. Pre-purchased tickets recommended.
