It has made it feel like winter finally. It hasn’t been too cold, or too nasty wet outside with it either. I think it has been exactly what I have needed to feel like it is the correct season. After it just being a little too warm for Christmas, I was ready for that cooler weather to bring some of the holiday spirit with it. My thing is, I don’t want it to The 2022 Rio Grande Valley Woodcarving Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, January 14-15, at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana in Pharr. Admission for the event is a $3 donation. The show features exhibits by carvers, carving instructors, tool vendors, and wood vendors. Door prizes will be given every 30 minutes with three large door prizes given at the end of the show. The park has been finding someone in their community to help out the last few years and the Harlingen CISD Clothing Closet has been blessed by them the last two. A couple of years ago, Sharon Bargel, who has been heading up the charitable projects at the park, said they didn’t have a charitable project. It was then that she saw a Facebook post about a Reverse Advent calendar idea. She shared the idea with Although he was in a brief retirement, Fred Renk is back at it this season. Due to the hundreds of phone calls received requesting the continuance of putting on the world class bloodless bullfights, Renk is proud to announce they will be coming out of retirement to re-open for at least two bullfights this season. “For the last 20 years we have put on world class bloodless bullfights and will continue to do so as long as people want us,” said Renk. “We cannot turn them down.” The Santa Maria Bullring is one of the only bullrings in 49 states. For now, the Renks, Fred and his wife Lisa, will be managing the events. BatFalcon pg.2

This year, while we have been finding new ways to entertain ourselves, the birds still continue on their patterns. The Valley is a hotspot to several migrating patterns and the Lower Rio Grande Valley has had a huge fallout this season. In the fall months, South Padre Island was full of color as Buntings and other birds passed through the area. Birders were flocking the area getting once in a lifetime photos to add to their collections. Birders at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge made a huge discovery in December – spotting the first Bat Falcon to be seen in the United States. On December 8, the bird was photographed by a visiting birder, Rebecca Gerlernter (according to Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival Facebook page). It was identified as a USA and ABA first sighting of the Bat Falcon. Ten days after that first sighting, it was sighted during the Christmas Bird Count by Troy Hibbitts. Even after the cold weather we have had, the Bat Falcon has continued to be spotted all across the 2,000-acre refuge. According to the Birding Festival’s Facebook page, A first finding of a new bird species for Texas, or the USA, needs to have permanent reviewable documentation in the form of photos, videos, recordings and more. The Bat Falcon has been well photographed and videoed by dozens of people and seems unconcerned about all the birders and cameras. Bat Falcons are small falcons with a dark helmet, white chest, black cummerbund, and rusty pantaloons. They are typically found within 150 miles of the US in the mountains near Monterrey, Mexico, at Mayan ruins, and northern Central America. The falcon normally likes tropical lowlands and foothills, preferring the forest edge, and adjacent semi-open areas with tall tress and buildings. They eat a variety of prey from bats and birds to dragonflies. The Facebook page says that birders have been guessing what species would be found next and the highly mobile Bat Falcon was on a lot of people’s minds. To keep up with sightings at Santa Ana, and other areas, visit this link https://ebird.org/hotspot/L129085. According to the ebird website, there have been 396 sightings of the falcon. The falcon is not the only thing, or bird, that can be seen in the Rio Grande Valley. The RGV hosts sightings of many birds and is a reason why there are so many birding and nature sites in the Valley. Another rarity that was spotted last month was a rare Fork-tailed Flycatcher at San Benito Wetlands. Someone also posted their lifer, a Great Scaup, they saw at La Feria Nature Center. So be on the lookout wherever you decide to go to bird watch in the Valley. Birders have had great success this year in photographing their faBat Falcon. Ranchero Village shows gratitude, spreads hope Weslaco residents of Ranchero Village Senior Resort Park kicked off the season of spreading holiday cheer by giving back to the local community. Due to the generous donations of the residents, Ranchero Village teams were able to deliver cash and multiple boxes of food to the RGV Food Bank while six more teams delivered gifts and food boxes to families in the community. They also did not forget to show their gratitude for those who serve the community. The resident bakers kept their ovens hot preparing Christmas cookies and goodies for holiday treat boxes, which were delivered to the Weslaco Police Department, the Weslaco Fire/EMS Department, the Texas Army National Guard, and the U.S. Border Patrol. Their goal is to provide a little sunshine and hope to those in need and to thank those who serve our community, both at Christmas time and throughout the year. “Making a difference in our community is our mission as Ranchero Village Senior Resort Park Gives Back.” R t

Worth. This began the American Bloodless Bullfights. Twenty years ago, Renk built the plaza Santa Maria in La Gloria, and started world class events that, to this day, have entertained Winter Texans and other tourists. “I built the plaza for David to have a connection with all the matadors and the bullfight world and continue in later years when for sure I would not be around,” said Renk just before his retirement in 2020. With the loss of his son, he decided to retire and hoped there would be some interest from others to carry on events. “It has gained an interest, and fame, and is inspiring to watch,” Renk continued. The bulls used in the arena are from the ranch of El Sabinal, a ranch that Renk helped to get started and are a pure Spanish blooded animal. These bulls go to the Professional Bullriding Rodeo after one fight – you can only fight them once – where they will chase the clowns the rest of their life. It was in early December, after getting requests to do shows, that Renk said he wanted to give more to the people that have always enjoyed coming to the shows. So he has planned two great events for this month. The 2022 events will be dedicated to Matador David Renk “El Texano,” QEPD, the sixth American promoted to full title Matador de Toros since 1902. The events will be held on Sunday, January 16 and Sunday, January 30. The young Matador Cayetano Delgado of Monterrey, Mexico will headline the opener, and appear on the 30th before he heads off to perform in Spain. The Courtneys, also known as “Pastor Pudge and Sister Sludge” are not really holding a revival – just having some fun with skits, music, and clean comedy – a modern day traveling “Smothers Brothers” reincarnated. The Redneck Revival made its stop at Bentsen Palms RV Park in Mission and by the time it was over there had been plenty of smiles, and abundances of laughter, many miles of walking down memory lane – and even a few tears shed. Alta is an established gospel music performer and, after 38 years as a PRCA rodeo clown, a retired Bob was ready for a change of pace. Bob had always made people laugh as a rodeo clown, and that trait didn’t leave him once he left the rodeo. Instead, he continued to make people laugh. “I started as a rodeo clown, traveled all over the world for years and did the comedy for that since I was 20,” Bob said. “When I retired and all I wanted to do was drive the bus; I started telling jokes and it turned into something we didn’t expect.” What it’s turned into is being named five-time Comedian of the Year among other accolades.
