Maybe you have been staying in and you are longing to get out and about. I can understand after voluntarily quarantining for the second time in less than a year... I am ready to get out of this house. Why not think about a tour? A multi-day? A one-day? One of the most popular tours that I offer is the one-day King Ranch Tour. And now there are two King Ranch Tours - the King Ranch Tour and the King Ranch Farm Tour. So, what’s the difference? The King Ranch Tour is our basic tour that includes a guide with you from pick up to drop off time. Once we arrive at the Ranch, a King Ranch Guide joins us. Generally, that guide is someone who grew up on the ranch and may be currently helping to work the cattle and care for the horses on the ranch. That guide now takes over and explains the daily workings of the ranch as we drive the twelve-mile loop road through the ranch pasture. Amid-day Texas style barbeque is included at the Cesar Kleberg Camp house. This very simple frame structure was where the cowboys spent the last night before heading out on the trail with the cattle destined for Kansas and markets to the north. After lunch there will be an included visit to the Henrietta Memorial Museum located in what was originally an icehouse. Here trains loaded with fresh vegetables from the Rio Grande Valley made their first re-icing stop. In the museum, you will see the hunting car and the saddles and guns that were actually used on the ranch. Life sized photos depict life as it was on the ranch in the 1930’s. Last stop is downtown at the Running W Saddle Shop. For those ice cream Time to travel to King Ranch lovers, a trip to the nearby old-fashioned drugstore is a must. You are on your own for that treat - but the banana splits are to die for. Now take all of the above from the King Ranch Tour and add a drive through the farming area where three-mile-long furrows stretch almost as far as the eye can see. Follow this with a visit to the feed lot where cattle are prepared for market. This tour is now the King Ranch Farm Tour...you might call it two tours in one. Those passengers who go on this tour say it is the better of the two and is worth the extra money. Y o u can exper ience part of the regular King R a n c h Tour if you go on your own. The Visitor Center at the Ranch offers a tour that includes only the twelve-mile loop road. You will miss the Barbeque and the Memorial Museum and the visit downtown. You will learn more and see more on a tour offered by one of the local tour companies. However, if you decide to strike out on your own, be sure to call the ranch first and make an appointment. Have fun traveling. See you soon.
