Whether you are a master gardener or just starting out, native plant expert Mike Heep can help transform your space with local specialties. Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host Mike Heep on the Nature Speaker Series on Thursday, February 3rd from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a special presentation on “Landscaping with Native Plants” followed by a plant sale. The presentation will focus on a wide variety of the Rio Grande Valley’s native plants and information on how native plants help sustain the ecological and biodiversity of the region. A native plant is one that has developed over a period of time (hundreds or thousands of years) in a particular region or ecosystem. Native plants have the potential to offer numerous ecological services that benefit humans, animals, and the landscape itself. Native plants attract a diversity of wildlife, support a healthy and more sustainable ecosystem, require less water, reduce strain on local water supply, add aesthetic beauty, and give a sense of place to a region. Mike Heep grows over 150 native plants and has been operating his plant nursery, Heep’s LRGV Native Plant Nursery, in Harlingen since 1978. Mike works closely with Quinta Mazatlán restoring and p r e s e r v i ng the native habitat and has cultivated and grown many of the plants found in the park. Some of the top plants for wildlife Mike will bring for the plant sale include the Texas Lantana, Potato Tree, Shrubby Blue Sage, and more. In the market for a particular bloom? Call Quinta Mazatlán and make a request to see if Mike can bring your special order. The more we understand about our native plants the better we can help the environment. The Rio Grande Valley is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the nation with rare finds that can only be found here. Come explore the beauty of South Texas, enjoy a special presentation by a leading native plant expert, and get a native plant or two at the Nature Speaker Series.
