Winter Texan Times

FEBRUARY 9, 2022 www.wintertexantimes.com 14 WINTER TEXAN TIMES It’s February... this is the month to give a special valentine to that special someone. It’s time to say, “I love you.” At least once a week, ladies - and even a few men - are meeting together to say, “I love you” and they are saying this to people they may never meet - to people who are in nursing homes, to veterans who fought for our country and to grandchildren and great grandchildren who will have a keepsake to always cherish. And just how are these quilters doing that? They do that as they quilt lap throws and full-size quilts that will keep some one warm and comfy when they snuggle down in a lovingly made love offering. It’s a wonderful thing when one human being can say to an unknown other “I love you” for making my life and my world richer and for protecting me and my loved ones. And that is what so many of our locals and our Winter Texans are doing as they meet together to quilt. All up and down the Rio Grande Valley, quilters join together for a good time of cheer - and maybe just a little gossip - as they turn out beautiful master pieces. Some of these artisans will even enter their quilts in local shows and compete for prizes. The art of quilting is centuries old. For some reason February seems to be the month to display this art in the Rio Grande Valley. During this month there are local quilt shows in many of our RV/MH parks. The biggest of them all is on February 18 and February 19 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Try to attend at least one of these shows and oh and ah over the beautiful artwork. Quilts of love often a community effort just as it is in many places today. At that time a centralized home was selected as a meeting place. The quilt frames were attached to the ceiling and could be raised and lowered to a convenient level for quilting. Some six to eight women would spend the day with needle and thread as they vied to see who could make the smallest and most uniform stitches. Frankly, those ladies were probably enjoying the gossip and togetherness as much as they enjoyed the quilting. Today so many ladies quilt alone using a round wooden frame to hold the quilt top tight as they stitch away. Sometimes the quilting is even done by machine. Doesn’t sound like near as much fun as having a whole group work together. Now, I ask you - What could be better than giving a quilt or a lap throw during the month of February. It’s a wonderful way to say “Thanks, I love you.” Such a gift just might be the best valentine of all.
