Breathe Easy with Colair Charro Days starts this weekend Brownsville is ready to celebrate Charro Days. The multi-day event will take place from February 19 through February 27. The annual fiesta commemorates the Mexican heritage of the area on both sides of the Rio Grande and is named in honor of the “Charro,” that dashing Mexican gentleman cowboy. The first Charro Days was celebrated in 1938 and features parades, dances, races, a bullfight, rodeo, a concert, a grand ball, and Noche Mexicana. Residents and visitors dressed in the traditional costumes of Mexico and honored the Mexican “Charros.” The Mr. Amigo Association became part of Charro Days in 1969 and honors a Mexican citizen who contributes to friendly bi-national relations. During Charro Days, the association holds dances, Mr. Amigo makes appearances at events, and they coordinate the Hands Across the Border Ceremony at the Gateway International Bridge. The Sombrero Festival is a three-day street party in Washington Park with Tejano, Conjunto, Country and rock performers. Adult, family and kid events and rides along with a variety of traditional and local foods are also found at the event. The Noche Mexicana Dance will be held Thursday, February 24, at 6 p.m. at the Amigoland Convention Center. The Color Guard Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 26 with the Grand International Parade following at 1 p.m. This year’s illuminated parade will be held on Friday, February 25 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit them on Facebook, or online at www. charrodaysfiesta.com. Leisure World holds quilt show The Leisure World Quilters sixth biannual quilt show will be held February 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Main Hall, 400 East 18th St. inWeslaco. The quilter’s raffle quilt is king size m e a s u r i n g 106”x106” in green, rust, and gold colors. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and are available from any of the Leisure World quilters or at the show. The drawing will be held at the end of the show, and you don’t need to be present to win. While the quilters traditionally piece the top in the intervening year, this year’s quilt was particularly challenging due to Covid restrictions on use of and number of quilters that could be in the quilt room. In addition to making the raffle quilt, the quilters make comfort quilts for residents experiencing serious health problems and walker bags, clothing protectors (bibs) and lap quilts for the local veteran’s home.
