But, hey, I was in Port Isabel, by South Padre Island, so who’s complaining? The temperature outside was about 72, the music was at a perfect volume, so people didn’t have to scream over it and, after a couple weeks of cold, windy, gloomy weather it was a nice change of pace – and that was even before I ate, which tells me it’s gonna be a good day. I ordered the seafood stuffed mushrooms, covered in Alfredo sauce and some parmesan cheese. I forgot from my last trip here not just how tasty this appetizer is, but how filling it is. I topped it off with some Pirates Landing hot sauce and was on my way to a day of deliciousness. I ordered the ranchero shrimp. It felt a little strange that they came with rice, charro beans and tortillas but, hey, we are on the U.S./Mexico border so why not? I could smell the plate before it arrived as my server walked toward my booth. When he placed it in front of me, a smile came across my face seeing how many ready-for-me only shrimp were laying around with the red ranchero sauce and onions and peppers mixed within. As a special bonus, two fresh rings of raw onion lay on top. One way to get to my heart is with onions, grilled or raw, so these two slices were an unexpected bonus. The food came out quickly and at perfect temperature. The shrimp danced their way from my mouth to my stomach like a carnival ride and the extra side of coleslaw just made it a well-rounded and terrific experience, as always, at Pirate’s Landing. It may have been overcast when I walked in, but it was a sunny day for me anyway. Pirate’s Landing is located at the foot of the causeway in Port Isabel’s Lighthouse District.
