This was another great emotional event as the red, white, and blue lap size quilts were presented to the honored veterans. The most recent event, presenting 56 quilts to our honored veterans, was truly full of emotion. Around 300 folks (family and friends) stood to honor the 56 veterans as they proceeded down the aisle following the Tropic Star flag bearers of America and each branch of the service. Some veterans proceeded with their walkers, some with crutches, but all proud veterans. The honored folks, including three ladies, had served their country in a variety of ways and in many conflicts. The Veterans Quilting Committee proudly displayed the full quilt before it was presented to each veteran. Patti Hoerr, Chairperson for the Sewing Room at Tropic Star, shared the veterans specific service as the quilt was presented. Fifty-six quilts. Each a different design made by folks who wanted to show appreciation for the sacrifices the veterans had made. Sewn in each quilt is a label that reads: “One Quilt to Warm You– Thousands of Stitches to Thank you,” Tropic Star Military Quilters. STITCHES From pg. 4 use the teddy bears to reach out to young people of all ages. Some children are stunned and silent. Others say, “I don’t want a teddy bear; I want my mommy.” “We firefighters know that later, after recovery, the children will remember the teddy bears,” said Sanchez. If you would like information on how you can help Bonham’s Bears, or get in touch with any of the organizations, contact their secretary at maplefrye@gmail.com. Put Bonham’s Bears in the subject line. to meet my family. I remember lots of great Halloween and Christmas events as well. I grew up to love you, the Winter Texans, that visit our community year after year – as did my husband. We want to thank you, our readers, park owners and managers, activity directors, and Wintertainers™ for the great community you have built here in the Rio Grande Valley. Without this community – without you – we would not have this opportunity to work and play in your community and bring your community newspaper to you every week from October through March. Again, we had so much fun this year and look forward to an exciting season next year. We have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with you and had one of the best Valley Star Awards shows this year – which we are taking over (so sad to see Robert and Billie Ferguson leave), and know we have some big shoes to fill. We do intend to keep that show packed with fun and talented Wintertainers™. Thank you for this great season. We love our Winter Texans, and we pray for your health and safety as you travel back north. Stay safe and healthy, and hurry back next fall. We can’t wait to do this again!
