It was a sight to see for many birders in the area, and there were many that made a drive to Harlingen to see if they could spot the rare bird – that really shouldn’t be where it was found. According to news reports, the Mandarin Duck was a family-owned duck that had escaped from their yard. It took them a See DUCK pg. 15 See RAMBLINGS pg. 17 See BLASING pg. 17 The weather has been really nice lately. It has been good to get outside and enjoy the cool breeze. With these mini cold fronts, we have been able to enjoy some nice temps, although not always long lasting, it brings hope for the fall temps that should be here soon. This time of year is a great time to get out and explore. It’s not too hot, and it isn’t too cold yet either. Of course, it’s rarely too cold to be Mandarin Duck spotlights at Harlingen park You are invited to a fundraiser for the sole purpose of supplying a Veteran in need of a custom trained dog. Last week we went out to the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse to see what was happening at the park. Our main goal was to catch the model trains in action, but the offices had closed early, so we decided to walk part of the trail and enjoy some of the grounds. San Juan, TX 78589 Family Owned & Operated Over 30 Years The Winter Texan Times has been featuring activities at the local Winter Texan parks since its inception, after all, that was part of the intent of the paper – to highlight the parks and the activities held within them. In its first issue, and during its first season, the Winter Texan Times featured small articles submitted by the parks, talking about their activities, what the park had to offer, and more. This week I am going to delve into some of these activities and mention some of those that take place today. One of our writers from the beginning was Virginia Sunderman. She wrote several articles, but one was about her park, O l e a n d e r Acres. She starts out, “The c h a n g i n g of leaf colors in Indiana is the signal for a lifestyle change for Winter Texan Times: Looking back 35 years Winter Texan parks have a myriad of activities this family and for many other families, too. The Winter Texan is again in his home in South Texas and is very glad to be here.” At the beginning of November in 1987, activities at Oleander Acres were already in full swing, she said. They had bingo games, morning coffee hour, and more. Some exciting events they had were one day bus tours to areas like Eggers Acres and Bird Rescue. Those that attended were about to see a couple of birds the organization was rehabilitating including a Harris Hawk and Caracara. They learned about their normal lifestyle and all that the organization does. Oleander Acres was also using its residents for themed event nights like Indiana Night. Another park with a submission was Split Rail RV Park. The article was written by Ruth Welch. Activities at the park began with a tenth See ACTIVITIES pg. 20 Green Gate Grove Jam. Day of the Dead exhibit open at Alamo Museum For the second consecutive year the City of Alamo Museum is presenting a Day of the Dead altar (ofrenda) during the month of November. The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a traditional cultural and religious holiday celebrated initially in Mexican homes, but the festivity, which dates back to pre-Hispanic times, has found its way into other regions in the Western Hemisphere, including South Texas. The usual two-day affair celebrates the lives of deceased children on November 1 and deceased adults on November 2. The museum altar, which is a reminder that the dead are not forgotten, was decorated by the Spanish language teachers from PSJA Memorial Early College High School, led by Maria Garza. The altar to departed souls has four main elements—a pitcher of water to quench the thirst of a returning spirit; wind symbolized with paper banners; earth marked with some food, like bread; and fire found in lighted candles as a guide marker. The museum’s seven level altar also features 13 special items around it including an image of the saint with candles, salt, bread of the dead, dishes of fruit and sweets, candles to serve as guides, and a cross. Decorations can include skulls that are detailed as to specific regions in Mexico and serves as offering reminders. Food often plays a major role, like “pan de Muerto,” or Bread of the Dead. A photo of the deceased person or some important possession may be placed on the altar which among the pictures this year remembers Rogelio “Cheddy” Balli, who was the Friends of the Museum treasurer and passed away in early 2020. The public is welcome to visit the museum, which is located at 130 South Eighth Street in Alamo. For more information you may call (956) 961-4398. The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. An altar to commemorate the Day of the Dead observance has been created at the City of Alamo Museum and will be on display the month of November.

The folklore vested around this holiday continues to enrich our community,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “This is the fourth year we display an Ofrenda in the Airport lobby for the community and travelers visiting our city.” Día de Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Like most celebrations, this exhibit’s opening was filled with traditional music and performances. The temporary Ofrenda exhibit takes inspiration from traditional elements including water, wind, earth, and fire; all believed to remember, and honor loved ones. MFE´s Ofrenda aims to capture and represent the uniqueness of McAllen´s cultural blend. “This Ofrenda display will give the public a glimpse of what they can experience in Mexico around this time of the year and also celebrates the culture we have fostered in the city,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. McAllen International Airport invites the community to visit the exhibit anytime through Monday, November 7 in the airport lobby. The airport is located at 2500 S. There were spiders, monsters and clowns everywhere you looked. Even the little entry to the train room had a dark tunnel with things hanging along the walls. The center features a 4.5-mile round trip biking and walking trail. On this trail, bikers are likely to see a variety of birds such as Kiskadees, Kingfishers, cardinals, hummingbirds, pelicans, and others. You can take the trail east to the wetlands, or west underneath the border crossing. Visitors can also take their time and walk the grounds or make reservations for a tour. The Magic Valley’s early 20th Century transition into an agriculture powerhouse is retold at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, which now embraces nature conservation as part of its purpose. The pumphouse still features some of its old mechanics on the grounds giving a peek to its history. Visitors to the museum can learn about the steam-driven irrigation pump that transformed Hidalgo County into a year-round farming phenomenon. Through the museum, you will learn that the hurricane of 1933 shifted the Rio Grande River a halfmile away from the pumphouse, requiring the digging of a canal to the river. There were originally two pumps installed in 1909 in the old pumphouse with others added over the years to send water to farm fields and cities via irrigation canals. All the pumps are still there for viewing. The bonus with the facility, is a look at the RGV Rails Club’s model train layout that is spread over a large area of Pumphouse lower floor. You can usually find someone there in the mornings eagerly awaiting to show you how the trains run. Richard “Red” Knepfler invites Winter Texan railroaders to come out to the museum and join him and others that love the craft. He invited any model railroader to bring their HO scale trains and run them around the extensive layout. The current layout has been there for about 20 years Red, a y e a r - r ound resident at Mission West RV Resort o r i g i n a l l y from Michigan, said he has about 150 cars of rolling stock of his own. You can reach Red at (313) 532-8549 if interested in more information about the model railroaders. The Pumphouse is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is located at 902 S. Second St. in Hidalgo. Call (956) 843-8686 for more information or visit www. thrworldbirdingcenter.com/Hidalgo. html. While you are in the area, the block preceding the Pumphouse is full of history. Located just a short distance away is the old courthouse, jail and other historic buildings. Also close by are several dining and shopping options in old houses. You can also locate other historic areas of Hidalgo on their sidewalk map located by a little swing and small pavilion. For the most part we are able to enjoy the great outdoors throughout the entire year. Plus added to that enjoyment we have cities who are always promoting entertainment and special parades and festivals. So many of these festivals are annual events and occur about the same time each year. If you haven’t done so already, why not mark your calendars with carry over dates for 2023. The Monarch Butterfly migrates about the same time each ye r – generally in mid to l te October. Somewhere in our beautiful Rio Grande Valley there will be a Monarch Festival. Did you attend the festival held on South Padre Island? Cancelled in previous years because of the pandemic, but celebrated this year was Boo at the Zoo in Brownsville … that is always a safe and fun way to celebrate Halloween. We are lucky to have a world class zoo in Brownsville (Gladys Porter Zoo) – a great place to take yourself, but especially exciting to the grandchildren who may visit. Now let’s look forward to celebrating our bird population. One of the biggest festivals in Harlingen is the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. It is always held around the second week in November during the fall migration – but registration for tours, starts nearly a month prior. This is when the birds are moving from their northern habitat to the warmer climates in the south. This festival always offers something for the young and old. One of my favorite festivals is the Festival of Lights held annually in the small town of Hidalgo. This festival is generally scheduled to begin the second week of December and continues through the month. The popularity of this festival draws such a large crowd that the venue was moved from the Hidalgo Chamber to the Payne Arena. Local school talent is a big part of this popular event. You will oh and ah when you take the twomile-long lighted trail on the open-air trolley. To add to the entertainment, carnival rides were added last year. Don’t miss this festival. Huge balloon characters are the highlight of the McAllen Christmas Parade while in Brownsville miniature houses with different themes will surely put you in the Christmas spirit. Watch for dates scheduled for these popular events. And these are just the ones held before the end of the year – there are more in the spring. How can we be so blessed to have a natural paradise surrounding us? How can we be so lucky to have city chambers and convention and visitor bureaus that promote our local history, nature and our talent? Make time to enjoy it all! Courtesy Photo Photo by Herb Moering

EXPIRES 11/8/22 Baffin Bay Seafood: Dinner with a view And, oh what a view! For those of you that follow us on Facebook, you may recall us teasing our view. While it may be a little farther than most restaurants, the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, located in Riviera, is certainly worth the effort to get there. The restaurant sits right on the coast of Baffin Bay, a well-known fishing spot for black drum, redfish and speckled trout. One of the most popular items on the restaurant’s menu is black drum ribs, usually served with hand-breaded onion rings. The Baffin Bay Seafood Company may just be the only restaurant to serve these tasty ribs fried with cornmeal. They are delicious! Especially with their homemade tartar sauce made with special secret ingredients. On our most recent visit we started with the Baffin Sampler with juicy fried mushrooms, fried onions rings, generous fried cheese sticks, and crab bites. Then we had the Seafood Co Platter, a meal that hits all the notes with its generous servings of black drum, a satisfying dense and flaky fish, fried oysters, and huge plump shrimp, adding a cup of gumbo to round out the meal. Steaks and chicken are also available for those who aren’t in the mood for a great seafood dinner. We tried the 8-ounce sirloin with a baked potato. Don’t bother asking for steak sauce because you won’t need it, the sirloin was cooked perfectly; moist and full of flavor. Save room for their delicious desserts! You’ll enjoy rounding out your meal with molten lava cake, brownies with ice cream or New York cheesecake. A trip to the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, combined with a sightseeing trip to the King Ranch, might just be unbeatable. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at 1294 CR 2360 E on the coastline in Riviera.
