We have been able to enjoy some cool weather with some rain here and there, and a day of warmth in between. It’s finally feeling like a South Texas Winter, and right in time for the holidays. We have been enjoying getting out visiting with some of the activity directors and with our advertisers. Food speaks to a lot of us, River Ranch Resort Honors park veterans The weather is great for a round of golf. It pretty much is nearly all year in South Texas. Therefore, we come to you to ask you what your favorite golf course amenities, golf hole and more are each year. Valley golf courses know the value of our Winter Texans and have continually made upgrades to keep you coming back. Golf Course Favorites voting has begun First impressions can mean a lot, set within the right context. J.K Rowling said, “A good first impression can work wonders,” while Daniel Handler has a completely different take and said, “I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed this, but first impressions are often entirely wrong.” However you view first or early impressions and whether they make a difference on you, they remain something that, as Charles Swindoll See GOLF pg. 12 Valley golf courses make a lasting impression See FAVORITES pg. 20 By Herb Moering Once again residents of River Ranch RV Resort recognized military personnel during a special Veterans Day ceremony at the River Ranch RV Resort in Rio Hondo. Not much has changed since 1987. Many Winter Texans still feel the same way about the Valley, and about getting together with friends. “We, Winter Texans are like a lot of snowflakes descending upon the sunny south,” said Jeanette Thornton of Snow to Sun in 1987. She went on to say, when we left northern Indiana before daybreak on November 20 it was snowing. When we arrived Sunday, November 22, the sun was warm and welcome. “Friendliness is a key asset,” she said of her park. “Folks came over to welcome us, give us some hugs, stop for a minute and bring us some news. There are always newcomers to look forward to meeting.” She went on to describe two summer get-togethers they had with fellow park residents while they were up north. One get-together had nearly 100 park residents gathering at Dawson’s Lakeside Campground in Minnesota. Thornton was looking forward to upcoming holiday celebrations at the park and reuniting with friends from previous seasons. Mo r n i ng s i de Travel Park, Tradewinds, and Magic Valley all shared Thornton’s sentiment on the holidays and upcoming get-togethers. The parks were having Thanksgiving events and already planning things for Christmas. They also announced shuffleboard competition winners, and how the pool hall was buzzing with groups. All these happy times as friends new and old were getting together to catch up and share the latest news. Today, we still have groups that get together on a regular basis. This is why we supply a Reunions and meetings column each week. We do know things don’t really start picking up until after the holidays, but there are still people enjoying time together. In the spring there is a huge Kansas Day get-together. There are See LOOKING BACK pg. 24 Photo by Henry Miller Courtesy Photo

Lakewood RV holding fundraiser Submitted by Donna Wright Winter in South Texas is anticipated this time of year. As Winter Texan residents are returning to the Valley for the winter, here at Lakewood RV Resort that means time to prepare for our 29th Christmas for the Children project. We are providing Christmas for more than fifteen less fortunate families from a local elementary, where many of our Lakewood RV Resort Winter Texans spend time mentoring the students over the years. This all started with our Worship Committee several years ago. Our fundraisers for this project have included a Soup for the Needy Luncheon and Bake Sale and a Dance. Currently we are holding a Quilt Raffle and Wood Carving Raffles. One king size quilt will be raffled off. The quilt has been designed by our quilting ladies. One of our resort wood carving residents has carved two items to be raffled as well. Raffle tickets are on sale now and you need not be present to win. Drawing is December 5th, 2022. On the day of the Christmas for the Children party, these families come to our RV Resort for fun with Santa and Mrs. Clause and meet our residents. They enjoy cookies, punch, fellowship and receive their groceries, gifts and a hand-made quilt for each child. The event will be held on December 10. “We receive a warm sense of the season in our hearts, serving God in His work.” For more information, contact Lakewood resident and Christmas for the Children chairperson Donna Wright at (269) 806-1428. Food Bank RGV in need of donations The Food Bank RGV is in dire need of monetary donations to help feed people at risk of hunger this season. Rising costs are responsible for many people turning to the food bank for emergency food assistance, many for the first time. Due to the increase in need, higher costs, and supply chain issues, the food bank is working harder than ever to meet the growing needs of the community. “We are constantly moving food out the doors to our partner agencies and trying to restock our shelves,” said Libby A. Saenz, chief executive officer of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. “However, we cannot do this alone. We need the community’s help. Donations are down but expenses keep going up.” For those experiencing a food emergency, the food bank’s onsite emergency pantry provides a bag of shelf stable foods and a referral to a pantry near them, for the next month, in case they need it. The Food Bank RGV is currently serving an average of 76,000 people a week through its 275 partner agencies. Partner agencies receive food and resources from the food bank for direct distribution to the public. To help support the Food Bank RGV, please visit foodbankrgv.com or text THANKSRGV to 44-321. Whooping Cranes spotted on the Texas coast AUSTIN — With the first sightings of iconic, endangered whooping cranes along the Texas coast being reported, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is reminding Texans to be on the lookout for these impressive birds as they move through the state. Janess Vartanian, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Acting Whooping Crane Coordinator, says that on October 21, a pair of whooping cranes were the first to arrive this season on Matagorda Island. Although this is a week earlier than last year, we still expect most will arrive in and around Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in December. Once whooping cranes arrive on their wintering grounds, many stay in the same general area. Younger birds, however, often haven’t paired yet and may wander a little off their usual flight path, using areas quite distant from the Aransas NWR area. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted Texas will experience a La Niña weather pattern for the third consecutive winter, prompting a warmer and drier winter across the Southwest and Gulf Coast. Vartanian says that an extended drought may prompt whooping cranes to seek out and use freshwater sources on the Aransas NWR and surrounding areas as winter progresses. Weslaco, TX 78596 said, “never have a second chance.” The following is a look at some of the first impressions provided by Upper Valley Golf Courses. Alamo Country Club 438 Country Club Dr., Alamo (956) 687-0910 This pretty and quaint golf course was once known as a hidden gem in the Valley for several years, its secret kept safely within the walls of Alamo Country Club and the residents who live there. Something that bright and beautiful can only be hidden for so long, however. The pride everyone has in this 9-hole private course is almost tangible. The course is impeccably maintained, the lush fairways are lined with palm trees and water hazards are strategically placed to make this a thinker’s course – do you try to clear the water, put the ball on the tiny landing strip to the side or just lay up and go from there? The course, clubhouse and pool are so inviting as you drive into the destination, that you already feel at home. People are chatting and having a good time all over the place, and the golf course seems to be the perfect gathering place – well, so does the patio… and the pool… yeah, and the clubhouse. The beautiful course is set up for 1,881 yards from the forward tees and 2,216 yards from the back tees. It’s a fun and radiantly beautiful course. And it’s still a gem. Champion Lakes Golf Club 2701 South Ware Road, McAllen (956) 681-3444 What can be said about Champion Lakes that hasn’t already been said. The experience from the parking lot to the clubhouse to the restaurant to the course and back is one of the best in South Texas. That’s because the City of McAllen Golf Director Carlos Espinosa knows golf, knows the service industry, and cares about the people he and his staff serve. It’s that simple. When COVID-19 hit, every course in the Valley took a step back and looked to see what Champion Lakes was doing. And what were they doing? Still serving their community and golfers, knowing that golf was one activity that people could still do despite the world seemingly being shut down. Espinosa was at the front of it all and gained first-time golfers as loyal customers and members. So, while the first impression may be an immaculate golf course with top-of-the-line amenities, the deeper and most important impression is a staff that works to make a day on the golf course a memorable time and, after all, that’s what it should be about. Ebony Hills Golf Course 300 W. Palm Dr., Edinburg (956) 292-2144 Ebony Hills was opened in 1927 as a country club and later turned into Ebony Hills Public Golf Course. The course was named for the Ebony trees that are in abundance throughout the course. As it closes in on its 100th birthday, a first impression doesn’t give the course justice. It needs context. The fairways have returned to the best shape they’ve been in maybe a decade. Its value is one of the best in South Texas and Winter Texans flock to it like a Saturday morning garage sale. The City of Edinburg is working on the course fervently as Ebony Hills makes a comeback. Golf Course Manager Ross Williams said the course is undergoing some construction, but it will remain open throughout the process. 13 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com NOVEMBER 16, 2022 Elliott’s Custom Golf 712 N 77 Sunshine Strip #20 Harlingen, TX 78550 (877) 428-5448 • elliott@customclubs.net SKYTRACK LAUNCH MONITOR Improve your game and receive instant and real-time 3D shot analysis and ball-flight data. Identify strengths, weaknesses & dispersion • Bag Mapping to select the right clubs on the course • Wedge Matrix to master short game Five Star Customer Ratings - Google Reviews COMPUTERIZED CUSTOM CLUB FITTING (956)566-1157 played by a lot of Senior citizens that enjoy walking when they play. It is basically a flat course therefore easy to walk using a pull cart for their clubs. Highlighting the course is a canal that runs through the layout along with the Ebony and palm trees that line the fairways. If you’re looking for value and a relaxing fun round, this is your place. Los Lagos Golf Club 1720 S. Raul Longoria Road, Edinburg (956) 316-0444 There may not be a better first impression of a golf course in the Rio Grande Valley than at Los Lagos as one winds through a few holes – and some beautiful homes – en route to maybe the most unique course in the RGV. The course is a par 72, 18-hole championship golf course that offers more than 7,188 yards of fun off the black tees. The course opened as an 18-hole facility in 2001. Today, all golfers are welcome to enjoy the undulating fairways, epic ponds, moguls and a layout that is filled with risk and rewards. As one walks into the clubhouse it’s a struggle to go to the left, where you check in and all the pro shop garb and golf necessities await, or to the right, where the grill and all of its wonderful aromas come steaming out of. With some flavor-filled burgers and delicious breakfast tacos, who said you had to choose left or right. Be like a ping-pong ball and bounce back and forth until your golf bag, and golf belly, are content. Rarely is this course in anything but pristine shape. The layout is exquisite, the surroundings are beautiful, and the challenge can be enormous. Oh, and that wind? It should be copyrighted for this course. Assistant Manager Joe Lopez said, “The aesthetics of the course, it’s just beautiful and we are very proud of. That’s the idea, to come out here, have a great time and the course right now is in beautiful shape — the greens, the fairways, the atmosphere and staff — everything here is accommodating.” Oh, and after you’re done, there’s a patio and a walkup window. Now that you know what’s on the menu, you may leave as content as you started. Howling Trails 1910 Hole in One Dr., Mission (956) 585-6330 Once known as Martin Valley Ranch, the golf course changed its name and was sold to the La Joya school district. That hasn’t changed the love that the surrounding Winter Texan Parks (and others) have for this 27-hole golf course, more aptly known as the Howling Trails 18-hole course with the “3rd Nine at Howling Trails Golf Course.” As you wind through the park en route to the clubhouse one can’t help but notice the abundance of golf carts in driveways or shelters, many ready to go with the clubs and just waiting for the driver to jump in. The course is wide open for the most part, but don’t let those early impressions draw you into a false sense of security. The trees were placed in the most imperfect spot for golfers but not so challenging that you won’t enjoy the course. It’s a course similar to a jar of jalapenos, most might be mild but every once in a while you get an “oh my goodness” fiery one that reawakens your senses. This just isn’t a course to enjoy, it’s an entire area to enjoy. Get to know the area and the people and this will become a regular stop for those just wanting to have a wonderful day.
