A list of birds and information will be sent upon request. If you have a yard full of birds in a count area, invite a team; they may be able to visit on count day. Extra eyes help spot birds for the experienced birders to identify; the more novice birders get valuable experience in bird identification and habits. In its 123rd year, the bird count tradition dates to when officers in the then newly established Audubon Society proposed to take a census of birds rather than hunt them for sport. Globally, the Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count includes destinations and countries from as far north as the Artic Bay, east from St. Jon’s and Ferryland in Newfoundland, west to Southern Guam, and from the northern most area of Alaska, south through Canada, the U.S., Mexico, South America and down to Drake Passage in the South Atlantic Ocean. COUNT From pg. 7 Pharr Community Theater presents Magica The Pharr Community Theater presents, Mágica, a children’s Christmas play for the entire family. Written by Adan Sanchez from Albuquerque, NM, the play has a cast of five youngsters and three adults. Told in English, the story follows 10-year-old Billie played by 10-year-old Jacqueline Aleska Castro, from McAllen. Billie has to stay home on Christmas eve with Ms. Birch, a mean nanny, played byAshley Madel Cantu, from Pharr, while her mommy and daddy, played respectively by Aaron Matthew Barrera and Giahiza Zapata (both from McAllen) have to step out to help Uncle Fred who got stuck in the snow. Reminded by her loving father to believe in Christmas magic, young Billie’s melancholy lullaby summons the loving fairy Trudy, played by 14-year-old Scarlet Hooton from Weslaco. Trudy magically brings Billie’s three stuffed animals to life to help save the day, Barney the Bear played by 16-yearold Alan Greco Castro, Toasty the little red dog played by 17-year-old Gilbert Castro, Jr (brothers respectively from McAllen, and their sister Jaqueline who plays Billie), and Meek the Mouse played by 13-yearold Brooklyn Love Dillard from Weslaco. The one-act play is directed by Seres Jaime Magaña. This delightful play opened December 11 at Pharr Community Theater, 213 W Newcombe Ave (Park), and runs until December 18, with shows at 3 p.m. on Sunday and at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Seating is limited and advance tickets for $8 (no surcharge) can be purchased online at PCT’s Eventbrite page by searching: Pharr Community Theater Eventbrite and or at PCT’s website at www.pharrcommunitytheater. com. Tickets will also be sold at the door starting one hour before curtain for $10 upon availability. For more information, please text or call (956) 475-1476 or (956) 6559308.
