Library to host art exhibit By William Renner, Reference Librarian Speer Memorial Library in Mission is hosting an art exhibit through February 28, 2023, featuring the paintings of local artist Salvador Carrillo. The exhibit will be on display in the library’s Community Room, and will be available for viewing during regular library hours except when the display area is closed due to other events. Everyone is welcome to stop by the library and have a look at the paintings. Born in California, Salvador and his family moved to the Rio Grande Valley when he was three years old, eventually settling in Mission. As a child, he was influenced by art, especially the art at churches. On viewing an image of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel painting, he became motivated to study and create art, and learned to use various artistic mediums, including painting. Often described as thought-provoking and dreamlike, Salvador’s paintings incorporate an abundance of surrealism and symbolism. His artistic message is expressed through the use of contrasting lines, as well as with various textures and techniques, and encourages the seeing of a different perspective. The library plans to expose patrons to various art forms and provide exhibition opportunities for the artistic community throughout the year. Artists are encouraged to contact the library for future art exhibit display opportunities. For more information, please contact Lulu Garcia at (956) 580-8714, or by email at lulu@missiontexas.us. Speer Memorial Library is located at 12th and Kika De La Garza in Mission. The library is open (except for Holidays) Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. The Library’s homepage can be accessed for information at www.mission.lib.tx.us. While many embrace the crisp air with excitement, curling up on the couch with hot chocolate and a good movie, shelter pups don’t have the luxury of enjoying this temperature drop. Nearly 500 Palm View Animal Society (PVAS) dogs are housed in the outside kennels, and the pets rely on donated blankets and cuddling up with one another to stay warm and dry. Can you provide the gift of warmth and open up your home to foster a dog in need this holiday season? The pups don’t need much except a warm place to lay their heads and food to fill their bellies, so if you have a little bit of space for an extra guest this holiday season, stop by the Trenton location any time during operating hours (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) to pick up a foster dog. Not able to foster a dog at this time but still want to help keep them warm? Consider donating instead. When temperatures drop significantly, PVAS turns to heaters in the outdoor kennels to keep the dogs comfortable. After running the heaters nonstop during this past week’s cold front, the shelter has run low on kerosene to fuel the heaters. You can help by donating funds to help cover the expense of a new shipment the shelter greatly needs. By leaving a monetary donation, your gift will help the shelter purchase the kerosene required for warming the kennels. If you live locally, you can also drop off kerosene at the Trenton location. Visit at 2501 W. Trenton Rd. in Edinburg to find out other ways you can help. Or call at (956) 720-4563. Recent food donations have helped tremendously. You can also become a dog food sponsor. Call and find out how. Courtesy Photo
