Welcome About the Cover The Rio Grande Valley is a great place to get outside. Because of the climate here in South Texas, you have a wide variety of sports to choose from that you can play nearly any time of year. Pickleball is one that is picking up the pace in many parks and cities. (Pickleball mixer at Casa Del Valle. You can find their schedule online at https://cricclubs.com/RGVCricketLeague or by finding the IARGV on Facebook. (Photo by Jesse Millan) The City of Nuevo Progreso, Rio Bravo, Mexico, holds two events for visiting Winter Texans. In December they hold a Welcome Back party and in March they hold a Tourist Day thanking Winter Texans for visiting their city. There is food, entertainment, a special crossing of the bridge ceremony and more throughout the day. Pictured here are Winter Texans (from left) Vicki and John Serna, Jim and Betty Christensen. Weather permitting, games are held nearly every week from January to March. The league holds a yearly Veterans Softball Game and a favorite among our Winter visitors is the USA vs. Canada game held in the Spring. (Photo taken by Henry Miller) Welcome to the Rio Grande Valley, a semi-tropical paradise in deep South Texas! Winter Texans have been making the Rio Grande Valley their winter home for over 60 years – enjoying the mild winters, palm trees, swimming pools and citrus groves – not a bad alternative to shoveling snow in the heart of the winter. Add to that dozens of golf courses to choose from with weather that allows duffers to enjoy the game 365 days a year. The RV and mobile home resort lifestyle in the Rio Grande Valley includes activities such as dances, R/C racing, pickleball, line dancing, swimming, shuffleboard, crafts, games of all kinds, potluck dinners and ice cream socials. Add to that professional Wintertainers™ performing almost daily in the resorts and other venues. Whether your favorite music is country, big band, blue grass or rock n roll, there are many talented Wintertainers™ who come down each winter to put on shows for Winter Texans. We have a great time in South Texas! In addition to the activities in the parks and resorts, Winter Texans enjoy local community festivals such as the Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission, Hidalgo’s BorderFest and Festival of Lights, Weslaco’s Onion Festival, and Brownsville’s Charro Days celebration. Many also enjoy visiting the beach at South Padre Island – a short drive from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley – as well as many historical sites and quality museums all across the Valley, such as the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg and International Museum of Arts and Science in McAllen. More and more retirees are discovering the pleasure of birding, and there is no better place in the United States to see over 500 species of birds such as can be found here. Many species, known as Valley specialties, can be found nowhere else in the United States. Combine this with the convergence of major bird migration flyways here in the Valley and you have a natural birding paradise. For weekly schedules of shows and other activities in the RV resorts and other venues, pick up a copy of the Winter Texan Times at any resort or Chamber of Commerce office – Valleywide.
