We have had one thing after another going on and it’s not stopping any time soon. Like I said last week – we are entering our busy period. Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Rio Grande Bible Institute and learn about what they do. It was a very interesting visit. I met some great people, great Winter Texans, that all volunteer their services and share their talents to keep the place going. They are currently working on their main fundraiser – a story I am working on for next week. Watch for that article and see The Rio Grande Valley Red Hat Queens Council presents the Festival of Tables. The event will be held on Wednesday, February 15. In our looking back to our previous issues, and our first season of the Winter Texan Times, we see when our writer Virginia Sunderman first used a computer to write an article for submission. It was printed in the January 15, 1988, issue of the Winter Texan Times. She writes, “This is my first attempt at using a computer to write an article. I am using a computer at the Speer Memorial Library in Mission. The use of the computer is just one of the many advantages the library has to offer the public.” If memory serves me right, but I do not recall ever having a computer at home. We used a typewriter for just about everything. I remember at one time having a graphing typewriter that we could put code in and it would print graphs, tables, pie charts, and print in COLOR if we wanted. That was a huge thing! My husband remembers using a computer as far back as 1980 at the school he was attending. While I only remember using the microfiche readers and that sort until high school. It wasn’t until about ninth grade, 1989, when I took a computer literacy class that I really had the chance to experience a computer – and now, how the world has changed. My oldest was using a computer before she even entered school. She taught herself how to read while playing games on the computer. This is when we had AOL instant messenger and the internet wasn’t supplied by every business out there. Our paper has come a long way since then as well. Because minimal things were done on the computer, we couldn’t have full color and other functions that are so widely used today in our publications. My husband remembers when they first started using a desktop publishing program at the paper in the mid to late 1980’s. He remembers some of the old tasks and how long things would take to get it just right. When I first started working for the paper in 1996, we were still printing out copy, using a dark room, grid paper, tape borders, and a copier machine to make clip art the size we needed for ads. The paper was then cut, waxed, and pasted on the grid sheet before being taken to the press. Because of the way things used to be, we still often use a term – ‘Watch out for chickens.’ This came about after a piece of chicken clip art fell on a political ad and was printed that way. Tour. There have been 200 tickets sold so far for this event, so it is bound to be a great show. This fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity started because of that great loved Winter Texan song “Who the Hell is Alice.” Leslie said she had never heard of the song until she started singing it for the Winter Texans in the RV Parks in the RGV many years back. She then thought it would be hilarious to do a fundraiser in Alice and have a caravan of cars from the Valley going up there to support a great cause. From there, “Partnering with Habitat for Humanity became an annual tradition,” she said. This year, they are building a house for Tori Gonzalez and her two children, Landon and Ellianna. This past weekend, the “Care-aVanners” had an opening dinner before starting on this year’s home. The Care-a-Vanners travel to Alice from everywhere to donate their time and skills to build the house. From the Valley, it takes about two and a half hours to get to Allice. Blasing is having people meet at 10 a.m. at the Texas Travel and Information Center for those that was to caravan together to Alice. From there they should arrive at the Jim Wells County Fairgrounds in Alice around noon. Everyone is invited to familiarize themselves with the area during the day. Everyone is free to have lunch on their own. Then they will meet at the building site at 2 p.m. to have a personal, guided tour of the home being built. Afterwards, everyone can check into their hotels. There are many hotels to choose from and RV parking is also available at the fairgrounds. To reserve your RV space, or for more information, call Peggy Wilcox at (915) 433-7769. Spots include 30-amp electricity and water hook-ups. Attendees will want to be back up at the fairgrounds at 6 p.m. The event is BYOB and sodas will be available for purchase. Make sure to go hungry to the event to be prepared to eat the world-famous brisket sandwiches for $10 – and that includes a soda and chips. These sandwiches are made by Dale Wilson and proceeds go toward the fundraiser. There will also be a silent auction at the event. The auction will feature items that the community of Alice has donated to the cause. But more than anything… Leslie says, “Let’s show Alice, Texas, how we support them, and that we are all there to have a great time.” The dance will include all styles of music from several eras and will be from 7 to 9 p.m. “As a group of fun people from the RGV area we sing “Who the Hell is Alice” for our new friends in Alice,” said Leslie. They really get a chuckle out of our group singing. “It is just the perfect case of people coming together for a great cause. We call it ‘Party with a Purpose’.” If you don’t have your tickets yet, Leslie has them available for $10 per person. Just catch her at one of her shows this week. Her schedule can be found on her website http://www. lesliepresents.com/ or you can find her on Facebook.
