Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild goes Under the Sea The 41st Annual Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show, presented by the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild, will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Centre, February 10th and 11th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The theme for this year is Under the Sea. There will be over 350 quilts on display, over 20 vendors, along with a Bargain Boutique with items for sale, a Silent Auction, a Wool Exhibit, Demos and Door Prizes. The show will feature quilts, wall hangings, and other quilted items with Under the Sea visions. There is a Chairs Choice Category featuring Storms at Sea. Participants were asked to portray any variation of a storm at sea. Organizers say it should make for some exciting quilts, full of movement due to the juxtaposition of square and rectangle blocks. Your eyes will try to tell you there’s curved piecing, but there’s not a curved seam in the quilt anywhere. There was also a challenge in celebration of this year’s theme. Participants were asked to make a quilt which features their idea of Treasures of the Sea. In this challenge, participants were asked to do dimensional techniques such as fabric folding and smocking; have at least one creature – flora or fauna – from under the sea; have at least one recycled item as an embellishment; and to be a specific size. Admission is adults $10 and teens $5 per day. Children 12 and under are free. Additional information can be found at rgvqg.com and on Facebook on the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show page. The Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild, which is a non-profit organization, has close to 300 members from across the Nation and Canada. The Guild provides National Speaker Programs and Classes, Annual Quilting Retreats, and Annual Scholarship Opportunities. Two scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors planning to study in the field of textile arts. The Guild also supports Community Service projects and Military Service Quilts. All information about guild activities can be found on the guild website at rgvqg.com. chosen organizations. The In His Steps Ministry is designed to assist in providing new shoes for needy school-aged children of the San Benito area. This includes all of San Benito CISD, the local head start centers, and the newer charter schools. Many children aren’t going or do not participate fully in school simply because they don’t have shoes to wear. Often, if they do, the shoes are very worn and barely hanging together. In His Steps provides school counselors, nurses and coordinators, with a resource to address this situation. Local community groups like Fun N Sun, as well as the church congregation contribute throughout the year to fund this program. If you would like to know more about the In His Steps programs or to donate, contact (945) 320-4934. The San Benito Food Pantry is a regular organization that Fun N Sun supports. The San Benito Food Pantry is a charity organization which has been in service for over 36 years, providing food for under income residents of San Benito. Serving 450 families each week or 5,7000 people a month, keeps more than twenty volunteers busy helping to operate the pantry on a weekly basis. The pantry spends more than $1,000 weekly buying food to help feed the hungry and those in need. If you would like to donate to the San Benito Food Pantry, you can call Forest Walker at (956) 572-0003. GOSPELFEST From pg. 6 Eye of the Storm
