REMOTE Winter Texans and Converted Texans during November-March can enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane by visiting the four weekly Big Band jams at these parks: Wednesday 1-3 p.m. at Valley View Estates in Mission; Thursday 6:30-8:30 p.m. at La Hacienda Estates in Alamo; Friday 7-9 p.m. at Palm Shadows RV & MH in Donna; and Ballroom Swing music brought back to life in the RGV Jammin’ in the RGV with Tony Ozark Saturday 1-3pm at McAllen Mobile Park (Pat Arguello Jam Host). Big Band (swing music) reached its peak popularity in the 1930’s and 1940’s using a mixture of clarinets, saxophones, trombones, trumpets, and a “rhythm” section. Teens and young adults would mob dance halls known as ballrooms to dance (waltz, jitterbug, Lindy Hop) and listen to swing music led by band leaders such as Louis Armstrong, Les Brown, Jimmy or Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others. Many musicians and band leaders served in the military during WWII, e.g. Glenn Miller. This article will feature ten musicians who perform on stage at these jams. All musicians started their musical careers as early as five years old or by age 11. Except for two, these musicians started performing for the public as early as nine or as a teenager - many in school or local bands. All of themwere either self-taught musicians or learned music and their instruments in junior high and high school playing in school or local bands. Pat Arguello (trumpet/cornet/flugel horn/vocalist) was motivated by her dad and brother to learn music (both performed in bands). She appeared on Bill Riley talent shows and state fair competitions. She has performed with the Ray Grooms band, Chicago Community band, RGV Concert Band, Winter Texan Orchestra, Border Theater, church groups, and various non-profit organizations. Del Hickey (trumpet) was motivated by his mother who played piano and dad who played sax to pursue music. Besides the weekly jams, he has performed with the RGV Concert Band, Blue Notes Band, and at non-profit organizations to raise funding for children with cancer and the Shriners organizations. John Kudja (accordion) was motivated by his parents to consider including music in his life. He performs at five jams a week and has been on TV for the Polka Hour in Minnesota. He has performed with Franky Yankovic Polka King, Lawrence Welk and Myron Floren, Peggy and Her Pals, and the Dick Macko bands. He also performs at senior centers. Phillip Raiche (drums, bass, guitar) was encouraged by his dad and grandpa to learn music. He has performed on radio shows while teaching inner city children music. He has performed in Christian, folk, rock and roll bands, and many concert bands. Dean Schilling (trumpet/piano/harmonica/steel guitar/concertina), performed with the Molly B Band, Malek Fisherman Band, Jubilee, Craizers, Jenny Starr, various community bands, and with Dolly Parton’s guitarist. Dennis Schwiebert (upright bass, electric bass, tuba) was inspired by his parents to follow music. He is motivated now to provide dance music and to entertain others. He has performed with many polka bands, Marv Herzog, Hank Haller, and Al Nowak bands. Roger Steiger (saxophone) was encouraged by his dad and brothers to follow music and has performed with many old-time bands. He is also the jam host for the Big Band jams in Big Band Jam at Palm Shadows. Photo by Tony Ozark Duffy Buttolph at McAllen Mobile Park. Photo by Tony Ozark Deanna Nelson at McAllen Mobile Park.
