We look forward to this time of year every year, but it seems to have really sprung up fast. The summer just didn’t seem that long. Other days it did feel long because it was just so hot! But we are done with that now. Nice temperatures are returning. It seems to follow you as you return to the Valley. There’s a reason why so many people call this place their second home. In fact, Mission, TX is one of the top 25 best places to live in the southwest. Many will tell you it’s because of the affordability, amenities, safety, and health care. Winter Texans will agree with the cost of living and will add the weather to that component as well. It’s also why many Valley cities have some top golf courses in the States. And it’s a great week to start our first issue this season. We just had a great weekend here in Texas with an eclipse and we’ll have a total solar eclipse in April. So, it’s going to be an exciting season, and year. The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas invites you to their 53rd Annual DAKEE SI (Fall Gathering) Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas Pow Wow on Saturday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Alton Community Center, 349 Dawes Ave. in Alton. Great weather, great people, and great friends. I am looking forward to the cooler temperatures, of which we have had a bit of a taste this week. It helps encourage us to be outside a bit more than usual and it’s just the right time for everyone to make their return to the ValSee WELCOME BACK pg. 12 Welcome back to the Valley! OCTOBER 18, 2023 www.wintertexantimes.com 2 WINTER TEXAN TIMES ration, which has awarded the company an economic incentive of $140,000 to be paid out in four annual installments of $35,000. In return, the RGV Padel Club has agreed to create and maintain 20 new jobs in Mission, join the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce as a premium member, and award a Mission nonprofit $5,000 to support community groups. The new facility, which will be located at 2513 Victoria Drive in Mission, just east of the Hampton Inn and Suites, behind Office Depot, will be the largest-of-itskind in the Rio Grande Valley. RGV Padel Club to build Valley’s largest-of-its-kind venue for padel ball, pickleball Two of the nation’s fastest growing sports are coming to Mission by way of a new sports complex. The RGV Padel Club LLC will invest $2.7 million to construct a new 21,500 square-foot sports venue for padel ball and pickleball players across South Texas. The venue will offer 18,000 square feet of court space – enough for seven padel ball and six pickleball courts – and a 3,500 square-foot building that will house a pro shop and a bar and lounge area located on the second floor so that patrons can watch games from above. “We’re thrilled RGV Padel Club is bringing diversity to the entertainment options in Mission,” Teclo Garcia, Mission EDC CEO, said. “These types of businesses create a higher quality-of-life for our residents and promote economic development by creating more employment opportunities, generating new revenues and stimulating the overall local economy.” Pickleball and padel ball are racquet sports that are gaining popularity worldwide because they’re easier to play than some of their counterparts, like tennis and badminton. “That’s why a lot of people started playing padel – because it’s really fun and really social,” RGV Padel Club owner Hector Ronquillo said, noting up to 4 players are allowed on the court at once. Ronquillo and his brother Sebastian built the Valley’s first padel ball and pickleball sports complex in McAllen last year, and it has since seen tremendous growth. In July, the McAllen club hosted what Ronquillo classifies as the “best tournament of padel ball in the U.S.” More than 100 teams participated. “We had one of the best teams from the U.S. come play, and the number one player from Mexico came to play as well,” Hector Ronquillo said. Padel ball originated in Mexico more than six decades ago, and it has recently gained momentum. “We think we can create a bigger community in Mission because a lot of people from Mexico come to Mission to shop and eat,” Ronquillo said. “We have been playing tennis since we were little, so we know the market really well.” The new enterprise will have a total economic output of $5.8 million on the Mission economy over a two-year period, according to a study conducted by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Data & Information Systems Center. The RGV Padel club “will support 52 jobs, generate $1.6 million in labor income, add $2.4 million to the Texas Gross Domestic Product, and create $327,408 in state and local taxes,” the study said. The RGV Padel Club announced the project after entering into a performance agreement with the Mission Economic Development CorpoPhoto courtesy of Mission EDC Photo courtesy of Mission EDC Celebrate life at Edinburg’s Day of the Dead Festival The City of Edinburg will host the 9th Annual “Los Muertos Bailan Festival & Block Party,” a pre-celebration of the Day of the Dead, on Saturday, October 21, from 5 – 11 p.m. This year’s celebration will be held on McIntyre St. from 8th St. to the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH), making it the largest Day of the Dead block party in South Texas. The event is once again in partnership with the Museum of South Texas History and Area956. The Day of the Dead is not a somber occasion but rather a lively and joyful celebration of life and the connection between the living and the deceased. It is a time for families and friends to come together, remember their loved ones, and celebrate the lives of our loved ones. Los Muertos Bailan offers various activities to the community, including carnival rides, plenty of vendors, and great festival food. The event is free and open to the public. The celebration will showcase the community’s artistic, musical, and performing talents, along with a chalk art competition with great cash prizes and dance performances from Mexican folkloric dancers. The festival will also showcase some of the more traditional aspects of Dia de los Muertos with MOSTH’s Altar exhibit, community procession, and a community altar. This year, the altar will be dedicated to Edinburg’s beloved Fire Chief Shawn Snider. Returning this year is the Catrina Contest for ladies and young girls. The community is invited to dress up as Catrinas or just paint their face like a sugar skull to celebrate the evening. To register for any of the contests, visit www.edinburgarts. com/losmuertosbailan. Featured on the three community stages will be mariachis and traditional dance performances, and in the amphitheater, there will be musical guests, including Elida Reyna y Grupo Avante and Solido. The city’s beloved and iconic Digital Christmas Tree, recognized as the largest of its kind in the nation, is undergoing a magical metamorphosis into the world’s largest Catrina light show, aptly named “Ca-Tree-na.” La Catrina is a sacred symbol rooted in Mexican culture that symbolizes the way Mexican people see death and the afterlife. La Catrina represents the choice Mexican people make to honor and celebrate the lives of those they’ve lost instead of focusing on the fact that they are gone forever. Fiesta de Palmas, known for its rich cultural celebrations and vibrant traditions, will now feature this extraordinary fusion of holiday spirit and Mexican folklore. The Ca-Tree-na promises to be a visual spectacle that will leave festivalgoers awe-inspired and enchanted. McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos expressed his excitement about this unique transformation, saying, “McAllen has always been at the forefront of innovation, and the CaTree-na is a testament to our city’s creative spirit. This dazzling fusion of cultures is a true reflection of our diverse and vibrant community.” The Ca-Tree-na light show will showcase intricate and colorful Catrina-inspired designs, paying homage to the Mexican holiday tradition of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The transformation of the Digital Christmas Tree will be a marvel of technology, with thousands of LED lights synchronized to create mesmerizing patterns and animations. “We wanted to honor our Mexican heritage while continuing to spread holiday cheer,” said Joe Vera, McAllen Assistant City Manager. “The Ca-Tree-na is a symbol of unity, celebrating the rich traditions of both Christmas and Dia de los Muertos in a truly one-ofa-kind way.” Fiesta de Palmas attendees can look forward to nightly light shows set to music, creating an immersive and enchanting experience for visitors of all ages. The Ca-Tree-na promises to be a focal point of the festival, capturing the hearts of residents and visitors alike. The Ca-Tree-na transformation is the result of collaborative efforts between the McAllen Convention Center, McAllen Parks and Recreation Float Studio, and McAllen Public Works teams who have worked tirelessly to bring this unique vision to life. “Fiesta de Palmas is back, and it’s coming back bigger and better than ever before,” said Joe Garcia, Marketing & Event Coordinator for the McAllen Convention Center. “Picture this: three full days of non-stop festivities set to take over the picturesque grounds of the McAllen Convention Center. We guarantee that your heart will race with joy from the moment you step foot into this unforgettable event.” Fiesta de Palmas, with the CaTree-na as its centerpiece, will run from October 20 to October 22, at the McAllen Convention Center. You Only Get One Chance To Make A First Impression Make It Count With Promos & Prints On Your Side Sales@promosandprints.com (956) 580-7800 1217 N Conway Ave, Mission, TX A Division of Nexus Publishing LLC City of Mission opens Community Tool Shed The City of Mission recently unveiled its newest initiative, the Community Tool Shed, which will provide free access to a wide range of tools for the community. Tools available include lawnmowers, hand tools, shovels, trimmers, garden rakes, and more. This unique project aims to foster community collaboration, benefit residents who lack access to essential equipment, and contribute to the cleanliness and beauty of the city. The Community Tool Shed is set to be a life-changer for Mission residents. By providing easy access to these tools, the program empowers individuals who may not have their own equipment to tackle home improvement and maintenance projects effectively. The Community Tool Shed will be located outside the Speer Memorial Library. Borrowing tools from the shed will be as effortless as checking out a book from the library. Individuals must live inside the Mission city limits, provide an ID, and sign the waiver of liability form to be eligible to borrow equipment. Residents will have the flexibility to borrow the equipment for up to two days. The Tool Shed is located at 801 E. 12th St. more about the distribution of the organisms and plants upon which pollinators depend, helping TPWD manage their habitats and populations for future generations. Plant and insect species may be difficult to identify, so observers can use the “What did you see?” function within the app to see science-based suggestions. In addition to the monarch butterfly, TPWD has designated 30 species of pollinators as “Species of Greatest Conservation Need.” Native butterflies, bees, moths, bats, hummingbirds, wasps, flies, and beetles are essential to healthy ecosystems and sustain native plant species, human food crops, and crops for livestock. Visit the Texas Pollinator BioBlitz website to learn more about the importance of pollinators, sign up to receive pollinator information during the event, and find other happenings across the state. OCTOBER 18, 2023 www.wintertexantimes.com 12 WINTER TEXAN TIMES NOWAVAILABLE ONLINE www.WinterTexanTimes.com 2022 Park Directory Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans FromMission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Published By: Park Directory RIO GRANDE VALLEY MOBILE HOME & RV 2022-2023 EDITION Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans FromMission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Published By: 2023-2024 Edition 2023 Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide ley – especially since we are saying goodbye to those hot temperatures that aren’t that nice. It looks like a busy season is ahead of us – and that’s a good thing. Fall events are already picking up and more will be happening soon. As the season progresses, we just get busier. The parks find more ways to entertain their visitors, and local cities have huge holiday events every year. Everyone is eager to have fun and have you join them. It’s great seeing our Wintertainers™ with full schedules already. I know there are probably a few out there that have some spots to fill, but I have seen some pretty hectic schedules so far. We also have some that are returning this year after taking a brief hiatus – so that should be something to look forward to. And, as usual, we always have some new Wintertainers™ making their debut in the Valley, one of which will be at our Valley Star Awards. Keep a lookout for those announcements in the next few months. We have so much happening in the Valley right now. Late October and early November are the beginning of culture festivals and other events for Valley cities. Many cities and museums are holding Dia de los Muertos events. These events usually go into November. Festivals right around the corner, or even this weekend, include the annual Pow Wow, Fiesta de Palmas, Butterfly Festival, the RGV Birding Festival, and more. We’ll have stories in the next few issues highlighting some of these events or they will be in our events calendar. With Halloween just a few weeks away, I am sure many parks are already decked out. Some awaiting trick or treaters, others ready for their little parades or costume contests. These are always fun. We love to see pictures of you and your friends – so send them in if you can. There is also entertainment to be found in your parks, and in most of the Valley cities. There is the McAllen Convention Center and Performing Arts, Harlingen Community Theater, Pharr Community Theater, and UTRGVArts just to name a few. Many local schools also have great productions in theater and dance. With the holiday season coming upon us, there will be plenty of opportunities and events to attend. We will try our best to keep you informed of the happenings around the Valley ahead of time so you can save the date for events you want to attend. We are always looking for the great story out there in your park. Many parks have interesting people that others should know. Some parks have interesting events like hog scrambles, turtle races, derby races, and chair volleyball. We want to know about these events and people. And if you can’t write the story, we can send someone that can. WELCOME BACK From pg. 1 Roseate Spoonbill. Photo courtesy of Dan Jones
