What is something special at your park that you enjoy? Do you go out of town for a few days to spend with family, or do you spend it with your friends at your park? I can tell you that we don’t tend to travel for the holidays much anymore. Our problem is that we have a pet that can get expensive to board, and we don’t always have somewhere to go that would accept him as well. So, when we do travel, it’s just for a day or two…. Which can make the holidays stressful and tiring. I do see that a lot of parks have little get togethers, Christmas parties, dinners, and even block parties. I know there is a couple out at Bentsen Grove that throws a really good one every year for their block. They have a huge potluck, and, by the look of photos, it looks like they had tons of fun. And the weather is great right now to have some outdoor get togethers. It hasn’t gotten too cold yet, and we hope it doesn’t either. We haven’t had too many rainy days too. It’s also nice to get that little nip of cold in the air right The McAllen Wind Ensemble is excited to announce its 50th anniversary season. The annual music celebration of the holidays is Friday, December 15, 7:30 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. Christmas with a Twist presents familiar holiday songs packaged in new ways to create a fresh experience for audience members. The music both travels around the world, weaves in some of our favorite seasonal movies, and See ENSEMBLE pg. 12 McAllenWind Ensemble shares holiday memories through their music McAllen Wind Ensemble. But he and his friends with him from Alamo Rec-Veh Park were in for a surprise as the city had its largest parade ever with more than 50 entries according to Alamo City Manager Robert Salinas. Winter Texans joined thousands of people along the street in anticipation of the 2023 Weslaco Lighted Christmas Parade. Near perfect weather made it even more exciting for those in attendance. Knowing what one of the alternatives is around the country made it even more special. “This is the type of weather to watch a Christmas parade,” said Chris Clark, who along with his wife and a group of five others all hailing fromWisconsin and one rabble-rouser from Arkansas. “This is my first time at this parade.” Mary Lauer wore a pink shirt proclaiming she was a Winter Texan and gave everyone else some fun-loving jabs and grief, then faked tears as some retaliated back jokingly. “Do you see what I have to deal with,” she joked. That group lives either in Siesta Village or Pine to Palm, while down the road maybe 60 yards away from the Wisconsin group was a 10-pack of northern visitors, these hailing from Iowa and with plenty of golfers it seemed amongst the pack. Mike Engleman of Mason City, Iowa was one of those golfers. He plays golf as much as possible and enjoys, among others, Monte Cristo and Tierra Santa, where he had just played and shot a 41-42 at the Weslaco course. Engleman said the Winter Texan life in the Valley all started when he and his wife came to the Valley to visit his sister in-law. “They were Winter Texans and we stayed with them for a week and thought we would just be Winter Texans,” he said. “We love how friendly it is every place we have gone to, and we looked around at a lot of different parks and fell in love with Rio Estates.” They bought a place and when it was time to go home, they didn’t want to leave. “We went back to Mason City, put our house up for sale and sold it in six weeks,” he said. “Everything is a mile or two from our park. Texas was never on our mind, not even in the top 10, let alone five miles from the border. And here we are. We moved in six weeks ago.” Weslaco parade draws large crowd See WESLACO pg. 18 Front row, left to right: Donna Apfel, Mary Lauer. Born in 1934 and ordained as a Catholic priest in 1957, Father Raymundo Peña was named Bishop in Diocese of Brownsville in 1976. On his passing in September 2021, the Bishop willed his collection of nativity scenes to the Museum of South Texas History and to the Historic Brownsville Museum. For many years Bishop Peña displayed the nativity scenes yearround. He considered them not just a seasonal theme, but a reminder of God’s divine love. He enjoyed sharing them with those who visited, using them as a medium through which to express his faith. Inspired visitors often gifted Bishop Peña with additional nativity scenes. During the inaugural year of putting the collection on display, 88-year-old Daria Martínez Ramírez walked into the museum to celebrate Fiesta de Nochebuena with her daughter Alicia Cardoza but was immediately drawn to the nativity scenes. “I knew Bishop Peña since the 1970s,” she said. “I got to know him through the years, and I knew about these nativity scenes.” A tireless advocate for immigrants and the poor, Bishop Peña lived by a personal creed that became his motto: “do everything with love.” With that love, the museum showcases the collection throughout the month of December and into early January 2024, with a special Día de los Reyes celebration Saturday, January 6, 2024. May all love each other this holiday season. Happy Holidays from the Museum of South Texas History. “Bishop Emeritus Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection” will be on exhibit until Sunday, January 7, 2024, which is included in the regular museum admission fee. The band will also feature the talented Colibri Children’s Choir for a special arrangement of Christmas movies. This year the Town Band Association is commemorating its golden anniversary of providing family-friendly musical entertainment to McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. Each year, the holiday concert is a highlight for both musicians and audiences alike. The organization’s Musical Director, Roger Olivarez, shares “Music is a gift best enjoyed when it is shared. It has been an honor to make music these past years and to get to share it with our wonderful audience, especially during this very special time of the year.” Other members of the ensemble had some very personal things to share about what the Christmas concert and this time of year means to them. While it touches everyone in different ways, the music and the season has special places in many of the members’ hearts. Roy Contreras, board president, said Christmas is a “special time of the season of the love, hope, and peace we find in Jesus. The gifts we give to one another are a symbol of the gift God gave to us in Jesus.” He continued by saying, “Our Christmas concert is our way of celebrating Him.” Olivarez had some fond memories to share about preparing for the concerts every year and how the Christmas concert is a personal favorite to work on. He said the level of difficulty of arrangements has increased through the years and has made for a better experience for the performers and the audience. This year, they have had to work harder with less rehearsals and hope that the finished product will be both memorable and entertaining. His memories include standing ovations, the satisfaction in the band members’ faces as they finished a hard selection, and the audience reactions at the end of their concerts. His most precious memory is of wife. “My most precious memory is looking out to Section AA Seat 14 and watching my wife’s response at the end of each tune. She loved Christmas and everything that it stands for; and our Christmas Concert was always her favorite. (At our first concert of the season, I found myself getting off the podium and looking in that direction after each selection out of habit.)” Clarinet player Isidro Garcia-Sepulveda said that the Christmas concert has always been one of her favorites to perform with the ensemble “because there is such joy pulsating from everyone’s playing.” It also reminds her of when she was younger, performing concerts as a beginner and in middle school and having her family there to watch and listen to her and the band. “It brings some sort of nostalgia when performing, and that is an emotion that makes me feel warm inside.” “When familiar pieces are interwoven together,” said Ed Keebaugh, a trumpet player, “It can create new 2017 Mission Quilt Show. Photo by Jim Brunson Quilts and wall hangings must be ready, with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are on a first-in/ first-accepted basis; limited space may prompt early closure. Only one item per person. Quilts entered in the past five years are not eligible for this year’s show. Obtain an entry form in person at the museum to participate. Applications are accepted through Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Quilts may be delivered any day before the January 4 deadline. The Museum will be closed on December 22, 25, 29, and January 1 and 2. Early registration is encouraged due to limited space. The exhibit opens on Saturday, January 13, 2024, and continues through Friday, February 16, 2024. Flute player Samantha Marquez shared some Christmas memories that have made her love for music evolve. She said music has always played a big part in her childhood, especially during Christmas, because of a very supportive grandfather. He loved music so much, she said, that he gifted her and her sisters an instrument set when they were younger. He went on throughout the years surprising her with a keyboard, and even later a saxophone when she decided she wanted to focus on Jazz. “I wouldn’t be a music major if it weren’t for his support and love for the arts,” she said. “December 2022, when the McAllen Wind Ensemble performed Christmas from the 50’s, I cried on stage as we performed because not only was it Christmas music from his childhood, but he also had passed away in February of that year.” She, and the others, say they look forward to performing this concert. They have enjoyed practicing the pieces and are ready to share them with their audience. Contreras notes “During this Christmas season, we find the value of friendship within our band family. We hope that our audience enjoys our presentation, and we thank them for supporting the arts in the Rio Grande Valley and wish them a Merry Christmas!” Currently, the organization has about 75 musicians from across the region ranging in age and professional background. Out of a love of music and a desire to improve the cultural offerings available in the community, they volunteer their time to rehearse once a week and perform regular concerts. Join the McAllen Winde Ensemble on December 15 for a memorable holiday experience with a heart-warming and exciting mix of familiar favorites presented in a unique, new way as they perform Christmas with a Twist. This concert features the special promotion of buy one get one free for military veterans who present military ID at the box office. Tickets start at $10, including fees, and can be purchased in-person at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office, by calling 1-800-745-3000, or at www.ticketmaster.com (additional fees apply). Reserved seating is available. Season tickets are available as well. As a nonprofit organization sustained by the community’s support, the organization also seeks to partner with local businesses who wish to advertise or sponsor programs. Nevertheless, the river drying up concept is a predominant issue in our upcoming, fun Christmas play, A Tejano Christmas Carol.” Now in rehearsals since last October an ensemble of 12 adults and eight children from different parts of the RGV form the cast of this two-act play, told in English, in about two hours, with one short intermission, set entirely in the valley. “Our play is an adaptation I wrote based on the famous Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol,” added Garcia, who also directs the play. “In our version Scrooge becomes Mr. Codos, (Codos loosely means stingy in Spanish) an unA Tejano Christmas Carol returns to PCT scrupulous businessman and water broker, played by Ray Perez from McAllen. After many years of greedily accumulating wealth, he’s about to reach his goal of becoming a multi-millionaire upon selling huge portions of water rights from all the properties he owns alongside both sides of the famous river, to grave consequences. Now imagine that, I must conclude.” Codos is also visited by three ghosts who help him see the consequences of his unchanging ways, past and present. The spirits in this adaptation include a woman soldier from the Mexican Revolution known as La Rielera, played by Pamela Zamora from Mission and the spirit of Tejano singer Selena, played by Melody Hernandez from Edinburg. This is the fifth time, in the last seven years, that the popular RGV theater company stages the play, with new talent and a fresh spectacle, surely to be enjoyed by all ages, especially nine-year old’s and above. The play runs from December 13, through December 19, at the Pharr Community Theater at 213 W. Newcombe Ave. (Park), in Pharr. Area volunteers are celebrating the collection of gift-filled shoeboxes that will send a message of joy to children around the world: God loves you, and you’re not forgotten! This year, tens of thousands of volunteers contributed to Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, by packing shoeboxes filled with fun toys, school supplies, and personal care items. The global Christmas project will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries, including many who are suffering from war, poverty, disease, and disaster. Each shoebox is an opportunity to share the message of the Gospel and bring hope to children in need around the world. Although drop-off locations have closed, there is still time to share hope and love with children overseas by packing a gift-filled shoebox online. Shoeboxes built online go to some of the hardest-to-reach areas in the world. Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping can browse samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement. For more information on how to participate in Operation Christmas Child visit samaritanspurse.org/occ.
