Ours was definitely not a quiet one, but it was a fun one spent with friends. It was loud with about 16 adults and nearly 30 kids from 15 months old to 20 years old. We had some great food too. My son and I made a jambalaya with sausage, black eye peas, cabbage, ham, and rice. It was very tasty and something we will be adding to our permanent recipe book. We didn’t last long though with the huge group, and did retire to home before midnight, but with fireworks still going off all around us, sleep really didn’t settle in until after midnight. We were able to listen to others celebrate the coming of the new year from the safety of our home, and bed. I hope with all the celebrations happening at the parks, that everyone was able to return home safely after ringing in the new year. We would love to see photos of your celebrations too. You can send those to news@wintertexantimes. com. ******** Now we are starting the new year and looking forward to what Pickleball is a growing sport, not just nationally, but also in the Rio Grande Valley. Photo by Carina Brunson As the holiday season winds down, the City of Edinburg invites residents to join in the environmentally friendly tradition of recycling Christmas trees. The Tree Recycling Program encourages residents to transform their festive evergreens into valuable mulch at designated drop-off locations. Starting January 1 through January 26, residents can drop off their bare Christmas trees at the following locations: Resource Recovery Center, 3102 S. Business 281; Edinburg Regional Landfill, 8601 N. Jasman Rd.; and Edinburg Nature Trail Park, 1300 N. Doolittle Rd. To ensure the success of the recycling process, residents are asked to remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, stands, and flocking from the trees. If the tree exceeds six feet, homeowners should cut it in half before dropping it off. Bagging of trees is not permitted. The drop-off locations are open Monday through Friday, with varying weekend hours at each site. No live wreaths, garlands, or plants will be accepted as part of this program. By participating in this initiative, Edinburg residents contribute to the city’s sustainability efforts, reducing waste and promoting a greener community. The recycled trees will be chipped into mulch, which will then be repurposed for landscaping and conservation projects. Toss your Christmas tree and go green

5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com JANUARY 3, 2024 Valley Star Awards 2023 Entertainer of the Year 2023 Individual or Small Band of the Year Buena Vida 77 Farmer’s Market will debut this weekend on Sunday, January 7, at Bannworth Park Pavilion in Mission. The market will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and will continue every Sunday thereafter. Bannworth Park is located at 1822 N. Shary Rd. While many vendors have already registered, there is still an opportunity for interested vendors to join. The market aspires to grow continuously, welcoming vendors at any time. More importantly, community members are urged to attend and demonstrate support – admission is free. Vendor guidelines can be found on their website at buenavida77gardens.com. For inquiries, you may also reach out to Norma Ayala via email at gardendivanorma@gmail.com. Birth of Buena Vida 77 Gardens This is an endeavor that has been in the works, or minds, for a while now. In the year 1977, Apple unveiled the revolutionary Apple II, marking the advent of mass-produced computers. During that same year, a close-knit group of friends, having traversed various elementary schools, converged into a single junior high school, and eventually graduated together as the Mission High School class of 77. The bonds of friendship among these classmates have evolved into a desire to contribute meaningfully to their community. Norma Ayala had recently returned to the Valley after making significant contributions to a Farmer’s Market and managing her own farm garden elsewhere. She shared her experiences at a recent reunion, and the ideas began to flow. Inspired by her endeavors, the classmates decided, “For the community, let’s start a community garden and a community Farmer’s Market.” It was then that Buena Vida 77 Gardens and Buena Vida 77 Farmer’s Market were conceived. Currently, the Buena Vida 77 Community Gardens are flourishing with fresh vegetables and herbs. True to the ethos of a community garden, crops thrive not only in designated farming spaces, but also in the backyards of community members. This initiative is genuinely open to the community. For additional details or volunteer opportunities, visit their website or send Norma an email. The gardens has regular classes and offers to teach others how to start their own garden.
