Winter Texan Times

FEBRUARY 21, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 20 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Rina’s Ramblings Do you know how it feels when you have so much to do, and you get most of it done, but more keeps piling on? Or seeing your to do list, as it grows, being able to mark stuff off, feeling like you make progress, feeling so worn out, and then you look back at it and see you still have so much more to do? That’s how it has been this past week as we have been gearing up for the Valley Star Awards that is today. It seems that for every two or three things we get done, we remember something else that needs to be done. And this is after months of prep – deciding on entertainers for the show, checking in with our volunteers, coordinating everyone, meeting with our activity directors to get the nominees, tallying the votes, etc. The good thing is our busy-ness goes down from here. We have a couple of events left, but nothing we are completely organizing like this. We LOVE doing the Valley Star Awards though. I think it is one of the most rewarding things we do. I wouldn’t change it, but it sure is a lot of work. We love our Wintertainers™ and love showing them how much our readers love them too. We have the chance to mingle for a bit before the awards show and that is always fun. I love learning who they are, not just what they do. And we love visiting with you too. The sad thing about this time of year though, is that people are leaving already – our Wintertainers™ and our readers/Winter Texan friends. We truly enjoy the time we get to spend with you and getting as much news out to you as we can. If you are leaving soon, know that you will be missed. No matter when you leave, you are missed. We know we have next year through and do hope you make a repeat visit. Hopefully we will see each other soon. - Rina Native Plant Project’s guest speaker for the February 27 meeting in Weslaco will be Jann Miller, President of the Native Plant Project. The title of her presentation is “Spring in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.” Her program will include the typical sequence of blooming native plants here, as well as when to plant, when to mulch and fertilize, and how to prepare native plants for the summer. Jann is a native plant enthusiast who has been gardening with native plants of the Valley for almost 30 years. She joined the Native Plant Project in 1997 and soon became a volunteer at the Valley Nature Center. She then became a land steward for US Fish and Wildlife and Texas Parks and Wildlife and spent many hours doing tract maintenance and revegetation work for both. Jann enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for native plant gardening with others. The program will be February 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 South Border St. in Weslaco, behind Gibson Park. The public is invited. There is no charge to attend.
