Parks were having all of their Halloween festivities the weekend before Halloween through Halloween night. I was able to attend two dances on Halloween night and had a blast catching up with entertainers, residents, and park activity directors. It’s always fun going to events and being able to sit and enjoy some time with you, our friendly Winter Texans. We have a great time getting out there, seeing the fun side of you and just a couple of the reasons you visit the Valley year after year. And now that Halloween is past, Thanksgiving is creeping up on us. This is the month of Thanksgiving and parks, cities, and organizations are now holding fundraisers, food drives, and more to help their local communities, schools, and food banks. One park has a pretty big one coming The McAllen Wind Ensemble is excited to announce that its 2024-2025 concert season will be free to the public, thanks to the generous support of the McAllen Performing and Cultural Arts Foundation. The Foundation is committed to advancing and enhancing the performing arts and performing arts education in McAllen and throughout the Rio Grande Valley. After a historic season, celebrating its golden anniversary, the organization is excited for this new partnership to open up their concerts to even more people. Bicentennial Blvd. on Saturday, December 7, at 6 p.m. Mateo Adalberto Lopez, will sing the National Anthem at the opening Holiday Musical Extravaganza that kicks off the parade festivities and the Hello Kitty helium balloon will appear as part of the lineup during the parade. Lopez was first recognized as the world’s youngest mariachi by the Guinness World Records at only four years old. His notoriety grew after performing on NBC’s national television show, “Little Big Shots” and international talent show, “Mexico’s Got Talent.” He took the judges by surprise with his amazing talent and confidence, earning himself the golden buzzer before securing a place in the finals. He quickly burst onto the mariachi music scene making appearances on the Kelly Clarkson show, the MLS All-star game, NBA games, countless NFL Games, the cover of USA today, and even appeared in a Super bowl commercial. Hello Kitty was created by Sanrio in 1974 and this superstar animated character, spanning generations, is truly a beloved global icon known for her signature red bow and heartwarming charm. The Extravaganza will open with the UTRGV Marching Band and a dazzling dance opening number, choreographed by Artistic Director Julie Doyle, in collaboration with all three McAllen ISD high school dance teams, Melba’s Dance School, the UTRGV Flag Corps, and 400 talented MISD elementary students performing the parade’s official theme song, written and sung by McAllen’s own Maria D’Luz. This show-stopping performance will light up the stadium, topped off by a stunning fireworks display. As the Extravaganza concludes, the UTRGV Marching Band will lead the parade as the official StepOff Band for the McAllen Holiday Parade, launching a spectacular 1.5-mile route down Bicentennial Boulevard. From November 4 through 11, county buildings and landmarks across the country will be illuminated green to show support for veterans and raise awareness around the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families. Now in its third year, Operation Green Light is expected to draw hundreds of counties to participate. The county role in administering services for veterans includes County Veterans Service Officers helping fellow former service members access more than $52 billion in federal health, disability and compensation benefits each year, as well as other services supporting the approximately 200,000 service members who transition into civilian communities annually. In addition to lighting county buildings, bridges, and other meaningful landmarks, residents, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb inside or outside their home to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported, and we open up conversation about the needs of veterans and the services that support veteran communities. Counties and residents across the country are sharing their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight. For more information on Operation Green Light, visit https:// www.naco.org/program/operation-green-light-veterans. Rio Valley Estates Voices of Veterans: Sergeant Corby Vinson shares his story of service AUSTIN — Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is proud to introduce another installment of the series highlighting the VLB’s Voices of Veterans oral history program. In this article, we highlight the service of Sergeant Corby Vinson who served in the U.S. Army and completed three service tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Vinson was born in Frankfurt, Germany. His father was in the military, so his family moved every few years. Vinson enlisted in the U.S. Army after he graduated high school and worked in Air Defense as a Stinger Gunner, lived in the Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii and participated in Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. Vinson spent seven years out of the military but went back into service after the September 11th terrorist attacks. He was stationed in Baghdad, Afghanistan during his first tour of duty. When looking back at his first tour, Vinson emphasized the naivety with which he and his fellow soldiers entered battle. His first combat experience taught him the “harsh reality of warfare,” which he would continue to learn. Every day, the men faced deadly IEDs (improvised explosive devices) buried under roads. After losing their medic to a 500lb roadside bomb, the men visited the lone survivor of the explosion in the hospital. Vinson remembers a nurse attempting to comfort him as he thought “What are we gonna do? I mean, we’re only three months in and we’ve lost almost half our platoon. What are we gonna do?” Vinson said “It was an eye-opening experience. It was very humbling.” During his second tour of duty, Vinson had more experience but faced different challenges. The soldiers faced highly trained snippers and EFPs (explosively forced projectiles). The men didn’t have any defense that could stop the deadly EFPs. Despite the dangerous environment, Vinson and his fellow soldiers went and talked to people face to face, throughout entire neighborhoods and learned about them. The trust that grew allowed the soldiers to gain information about the enemy. They built a relationship with the locals, even being invited to dinner. NOVEMBER 6, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 10 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Halloween tricks and treats were had by many By Carina A. Brunson Halloween tricks and treats were easily found at several parks on Halloween night. There were at least nine parks having events that evening and I was able to make it out to two of them – Winter Ranch and Bit-O-Heaven. The park halls were all decked out with Halloween decorations and attendees were dressed as their favorite superheroes, villains, monsters and more. The dance floors were full of dancing and line dancing, grooving to the music being played by Ron Moshier at Winter Ranch and Curt James at Bit-O-Heaven. It’s the only time of year you can find songs like The Monster Mash being sung and seeing monsters on the dance floor having fun. We also received photos from Bit-O-Heaven (Ed Hurley, photographer), Green Gate Grove, Seven Oaks, and Victoria Palms. Most of the parks had costume dances. Bit-O-Heaven made a full day of events with a golf cart parade, and a potluck before ending their evening with a dance – and there were winners at all three events. Here is a sampling of some of the fun Winter Texans had at these parks. Bit O Heaven 3rd Place: Wayne & Sharon Blindauer. Photo courtesy of Ed Hurley Bit O Heaven Golf Cart Parade. NOVEMBER 6, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 12 WINTER TEXAN TIMES (956)566-1157 The Museum of South Texas History presents “The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery” exhibit in the Cell Block Gallery upstairs in the 1910 Jail building. On February 15, 2023, meteorites landed on a ranch near the town of El Sauz in Starr County. The meteorites found on the ranch were documented and collected by expert and amateur meteorite hunters. The exhibit will highlight a twofold story: how meteors fell through the sky across Europe and the United States before crash landing on a ranch in South Texas and the history of space rocks. Several meteorite pieces found on the ranch property will be featured in state-of-the-art cases with a 360-view. This exhibit, which will run through August 2025, is included in the regular museum admission fees. Museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the exhibit, please contact the Curator of Exhibits at (956) 383-6911 or jbautista@mosthistory.org. The Museum of South Texas History is located in downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded A fascination with walls Walls or fences have always fascinated me. Possibly because I have wondered so many times why they were built in the first place. Are they built to keep something in or to keep something or someone out? Why do we build walls or fences? Is it because we can’t get along with each other? My father had a very interesting experience with cemetery walls. I grew up in a farming community where fences were very important to keep cattle in. That importance carried over to the cemetery where each little family plot had a small six inch high and some three-inchwide concrete border around the family plot. Between each little wall there was about a four-inch vacant spot where weeds grew and multiplied. Can you imagine in a perpetual care cemetery what extra work that meant for the caretaker! Extra work meant extra expense. My father- who was a very practical man - he believed it would be more logical to join one concrete barrier to the next...which of course is what he did. This did not go over very well with the next-door plot which belonged to his sister’s family. He had to send someone in to cut through the concrete wall and remedy the situation to avoid a family feud. After many years the local Cemetery Association board just last year voted that in order to save money on maintenance that the wall from one family plot should be joined to the next family plot. How practical can you get? Some day - when you have time - look up the most famous walls that exist in the world. Of course, the best known and the longest is the Great Wall of China. My daughter who visited China must have also been infatuated with walls. Even though it was against the law she managed to sleep on the Great Wall of China. I am sure that today the Great Wall of China is patrolled more diligently than when she slept on the wall when she was in her mid to late twenties. One of the more famous walls is the chewing gum wall in Seattle, Washington. Can you imagine all these globs of chewing gum stuck on a wall. According to the description of the wall there are so many clumps of chewing gum that the wall emits a sugary smell. Another famous wall was the Berlin Wall which, at one time, separated many families. In my many trips I never saw the Berlin Wall. But I did see one of the fences in Germany with lookout towers with guards watching the fence. It was scary to realize you were being watched. Another wall that really disturbs me is the wall in Israel. Anytime I have had a bus group who visited Christ’s birthplace, our bus has been stopped but all we needed to say was “Americans,” which was pretty obvious anyway as Americans stand out like sore thumbs. Then we were waved on through. Today, walls are sometimes built as memorials such as the Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Our local Border Wall does not even make the list even though it does draw many politicians to visit the Valley for our “border problem.” See STAR pg. 15 The Shooting Star of Starr County on display Courtesy photo

NOVEMBER 6, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 14 WINTER TEXAN TIMES your community. Officially observed on November 11, Veterans Day is a time to recognize the service and pay respects to military Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This holiday started as a day to reflect the heroism of those who died in our country’s service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on November 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all Veterans in all wars. The City of Mission invites the community to join in a day of festivities on November 9, honoring Veterans with a series of events, including the 6th Annual Veterans Day Parade, a DD214 Freedom 5k Run, a Veterans Appreciation BBQ, and a lively family-friendly festival. At 7 a.m., the day begins with the DD214 Freedom Run, a 5K open to all ages along the parade route on Business 83 between Conway Ave. and Bryan Rd. The $25 registration fee is waived for Veterans using the coupon code “FREEDOM” at checkout. Credentials are required at packet pickup. Register for the DD214 Freedom 5K Run at https://endurancesplits.redpodium.com/city-ofmission-dd214-freedom-run-. Mission’s Veterans Day Parade will start at 12 p.m. and run along Business 83 between Conway Ave. and Bryan Rd. The City of Mission encourages the community to bring lawn chairs and show their support for Veterans as patriotic floats pass by. After the parade, attendees can gather from 2 to 6 p.m. at the CEED building (801 Bryan Rd.) for the Veterans Day Festival, featuring live music, vendors, and family-friendly activities. The event is free and open to all. The day continues with the Veterans Appreciation BBQ, a drive-thru event at the Mission Parks & Recreation (721 Bryan Rd.) from 2 to 4 p.m. that will offer 1,000 free chicken plates to Veterans. On-site seating will be available. Road closures will be in effect throughout the day to ensure safety; please follow posted signs. The City of Mission looks forward to honoring Veterans with the community on this special day. On Monday, November 11, at 9 a.m. The Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery will hold their Veterans Day Flag Laying Ceremony. No RSVP is needed, and flags will be provided. The cemetery is located at 2520 Inspiration Rd., in Mission. The McAllen’s Veterans War Memorial Committee will host a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11 at 10 a.m. The event will be held at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas, 29th St. and Col. Plummer Dr., by the McAllen Convention Center. “On Veterans’ Day, we remember those brave men and women who honorably served our great nation,” said Mayor Villalobos. “It is because of the millions of people who answered that call to serve that America is still the greatest country in the world.” To learn more about the memorial, visit https://www.mcallen.net/ veterans/. The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System celebrates Veterans Day with Veterans Benefits and Information Fairs, free food and drinks, door prizes, and music. They will be holding an event in Laredo at Laredo Vietnam Veterans Plaza, 1120 E.
