It’s gotten cooler and we have had some rain here and there as well. Even though we’ll have a bit of a warmer day now and then, I am thankful for the cooler temps. I could live without the dreariness though. It’s a great time to have gatherings with others, indoors and outdoors. This is the time of year we see many stories about what the parks are doing with their residents for the holidays. We love seeing photos with everyone enjoying their time while in the Valley. There have been many city parades and Christmas tree lightings. I am sure the parks have been having their own type of fun as well with golf cart parades, and their own tree lightings. We would love to include some photos in our upcoming issues of how you have decorated the park and started your December holidays. What we would also like to see and share is how you are giving Gather your family and friends for McAllen Wind Ensemble’s (MWE) next concert, Noche Mágica on Friday, December 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. Audiences can expect an evening of captivating melodies and festive arrangements that celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of the holiday season. A special vocal performance from Alberto Esco will complement the musical Christmas ambiance. Main St. on Saturday, December 14, starting at 7 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will feature the traditional posada procession that reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging. This year’s event promises to provide entertainment for everyone featuring a special performance by Nikki Rowe’s Razz Ma Tazz Show Choir. The posada procession culminates at a nativity scene, with shepherds and the Three Wise Men. The posada will be accompanied by traditional singing during the procession and will include Christmas songs performed by choirs from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionary choir, colibrí children’s choir, and the La Joya ISD Seguin Elementary choir and cheer team. “Come and experience the joy of Christmas with the story of the baby Jesus’ birth and by singing along to festive Christmas carols,” said Chris Lash, Program Manager for Keep McAllen Beautiful. The event is free and open to everyone in the community. Participants are encouraged to bring their picnic blanket or lawn chair. Attendees will get to enjoy beverages sponsored by Starbucks Coffee Store #9301. Two lucky attendees will be the winners of Christmas piñatas, which will be raffled off at the end of the evening. Keep McAllen Beautiful is an educational, non-profit organization that develops and expands the awareness of McAllen’s citizens and visitors about littering and proper disposal of waste and promotes the preservation and enhancement of McAllen’s natural beauty and environment. Last chance to catch a Christmas parade This weekend might be the last chance you have to catch some city Christmas parades. Nearly every city in the Valley has had, or plans on having, a holiday parade. All of them are lighted parades, so they bring out more festive decorations and fun. The City of Edinburg had theirs originally scheduled for last week, but due to weather conditions, they have rescheduled it for tomorrow. The Annual Night of Lights Parade will now take place on Thursday, December 12, at 6 p.m. It will be held downtown along Closner Blvd. Weslaco will have their Santa Dash 5k on Saturday, December 14, starting at 3:30 p.m. It will be held downtown. You can find out more information on their events calendar at Weslaco.com. Weslaco’s parade will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. downtown on Texas Blvd. The route will run from Pike St. to 6th St. The City of Alamo Will have their Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday, December 13, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. It will be held at Downtown Central Park, 800 E. Main St. Santa and Mrs. Claus the parade, pulled by an Alamo Fire Department vehicle. Photo by Herb Moering

With Purchase of a New Model Home Time running out to adopt angels Support needed to fulfill Christmas wishes for children in our community With two days left for all Angel Tree gifts to be returned, The Salvation Army still has about 150 angels yet to be adopted. There is still time to help. “We still have angel tags hanging on the Angel Trees and are praying all will be taken by the last day for adoption on Thursday, December 12,” said Major Jan Zuniga of The Salvation Army of McAllen. “We often see a late rush in adoptions and have staff and volunteers ready at the Angel Trees ready to help those who would like to take an angel and provide Christmas for a child in need.” All gifts purchased for angels, each representing a child from the community, should be returned to The Salvation Army Angel Tree locations by Thursday, December 12 – at La Plaza Mall, Walmart, and The Salvation Army of McAllen. There is lots of work ahead for the staff and volunteers at The Salvation Army as they prepare for Angel Tree distribution days on December 17 through 20, when local families representing 2,500 area children will collect their Christmas gifts. “Our community of donors, partners and volunteers is what keeps The Salvation Army Angel Tree program alive year after year,” said Zuniga. “Your kindness and generosity mean that every child registered on the Angel Tree program has a gift to open on Christmas morning, and parents don’t have to decide between paying bills or buying toys. Please help today by adopting an angel.” If you would like to support the Angel Tree but do not have time to shop, you can purchase gifts through the Walmart Angel Tree online registry by going to www. walmartangeltree.com. Search for McAllen and view the gift registry. All items purchased will be delivered directly to The Salvation Army and be prepared for a child this Christmas. “No child registered to our program will go without gifts. We always make arrangements at The Salvation Army to provide presents for the forgotten angels which are those tags unfortunately left hanging on the trees,” said Zuniga. “The Walmart Gift registry is a great way for people to help us fill all angel requests without having to physically go to the store, select an angel, and shop for toys. We are so thankful to Walmart for the many ways they support The Salvation Army at Christmas.” Volunteers are needed to support the Angel Tree program. Call Jorge Rodriguez Jr. at (956) 682-1468 or email Jorge.RodriguezJr@uss.salvationarmy.org for details of how you can get involved. Interstate Hwy 2 Mission, TX 78572 NEW AND USED GOLF CARTS committee that votes on the music to be played. This year, the group decided to do the same theme as the City of McAllen’s Parade, Noche Mágica. Music Director Roger Olivarez said he believes there is a magic to the season and to the music. He hopes everyone can find that magic and connection to Christmas. “It takes them back to simpler times, maybe,” said Olivarez. “Back to happier times. Back to their childhood. Back to pleasant memories.” “There’s already a certain amount of magic in there,” he said of Christmas music. As a band director, preparing for a Christmas concert was something I always looked forward to, he said. It was a tradition every year, one he has always cherished. He has been directing MWE since 2014 and the Christmas concert has always been his favorite to prepare for. Olivarez’s wife passed away last year, and Christmas was her favorite holiday and very special to her – so it has inspired him to make sure the concert is special for others. He could always find her in the crowd. He remembers her smile and her clapping at the end of each number. He hopes the music will do that to others that are there for the performance. There is nothing quite like reaching the end of a performance and seeing and feeling the energy of the audience. That keeps us going, he said. That is the energy we need to feed off to keep doing what we are doing. Christmas concerts are challenging, he noted. They have a little more time to prepare for their other concerts, but only have four rehearsals for their Christmas concert. We try not to choose easy music, we want something challenging, and we try to do something new each year. “We always manage to rise to the occasion,” he said. It shows the dedication our players have to the music and the performance. Olivarez said he hopes that more of the community take advantage of the concerts being free. All through time, the arts have been an important part of history and culture. He anticipates playing to a full house and for families to share with each other their experience and encourage others to go to the concerts. Board President Roy Contreras said that Christmas concerts mean getting your family together, celebrating with your family, and celebrating the birth of Christ – which is the reason for the season. “We get together as a band, but we get together as a family and because we love doing this for the community,” said Contreras. “We love to do this. We do the best we can to make a beautiful product for the public.” Contreras, saying he grew up in the 50s and 60s, that Christmas brings back the memories of black and white TV, Frank Sinatra, and other singers of the time, and enjoying being together with family. We always came together for the holiday, and it was enjoying that time and making it a celebration of Him. Christmas music and concerts bring that togetherness. They try to get the best quality music so the public can enjoy something they might never have heard of before, he said about this year’s Christmas concert. Most of the music this year is new. The musicians must be dedicated to learning the music and performing at their best. Some of them are amateur musicians, and some are professionals still working in the music industry. “We need people to experience something,” he said about his hopes of their concerts. The music fills the whole auditorium. You can hear the piccolo, the trombone, and all the other instruments. “We’ve been blessed,” he said MWE From pg. 1 about being able to spread the music to the public and giving them the opportunity to come and enjoy the concerts. Concert admission is free, but an electronic ticket is required. Tickets can be reserved on the Ensemble’s website at www.mcallenwindensemble.org, with assistance available at the door if needed. The McAllen Performing Arts Center is located at 801 Convention Center Blvd. The McAllen Wind Ensemble is thrilled to continue its 2024-2025 concert season, offering free admission to the public. The Ensemble invites everyone to create new musical memo r i e s this year with McAllen’s musical ambassadors. The McAllen Wind En s emb l e consists of approximately 75 musicians from diverse backgrounds who volunteer their time to rehearse weekly and perform. Under the direction of Music Director Roger Olivarez, the 2024-2025 season will feature four concerts, each bringing a unique theme and repertoire to the community. The remaining concerts are Tuesday, February 18 and Saturday, April 5, both at 7:30 p.m. Learn more at www.mcallenwindensemble.org and follow on Facebook and Instagram. McAllen Wind Ensemble.
