Did your park have a Christmas Lighting contest, or Christmas Tree display? Share the photos and winners with us. Next week is New Year’s Eve. Here I hope you have a very safe and fun New Year’s Eve. I know many of you will be enjoying some type of entertainment at your park, or another park, for the evening. Please share your festive photos with us. We love seeing the fun you have at the events in your park. Now back to New Year’s…. Do you make a New Year’s resolution? I haven’t in years, I just try to do better than I did last year. Something I try to do everyday though. I will look for more opThe Museum of South Texas History will feature the “Bishop Emeritus Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection,” a spotlight exhibit displaying 120 nativity scenes until Sunday, January 5, 2025. Born in 1934 and ordained as a Catholic priest in 1957, Father Raymundo Peña was named bishop in Diocese of Brownsville in 1976. On his passing in September 2021, the bishop willed his collection of nativity scenes to MOSTH and to the Historic Brownsville Museum. Their project supports the USO-San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston. During the season, or at least December through March, volunteers get together with stocking templates and get to sewing the stockings. They have a couple of different templates and set up an assembly line. There are cutters and sewers along the line, and then those that tidy up the edges making sure it’s a nice, finished product. Many have special entertainment lined up with a dinner. So many of these parks sell out of tickets weeks before New Year’s Eve. So, if you didn’t get a ticket in time and are still looking for things to do, there are a few cities having some celebrations you can join in on. South Padre Island puts on a good fireworks show. New Year’s Eve is just a little different, with a bigger show to celebrate the ringing of a new year. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. There are celebrations throughout the island at several locations too. The big show will be held in the Entertainment District at 211 W. Whiting St. The City of Pharr will have their annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. The city is inviting residents to ring in the new year with live music featuring the Spazmatics and La Castera, a firework display, a vendor market, and more. The ball drop event will also feature a drone show. The free event begins at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Pharr. While not exactly New Year’s Eve related, many cities still have their Christmas lights out for visitors to enjoy. Holiday Village in Brownsville will still have their little cottages all up and decorated until January 1. You can visit their website at https://holidayvillagebrownsville. com/. Hidalgo Festival of Lights will also have their events through January 1. Find out more information on their website at https://www.hidalgofestivaloflights.com/. The City of Edinburg has their lights out for you to enjoy as well. They can be seen at the City Hall Promenade and will be lit until January 2. You can see the lights by going to 201 W. McIntyre St. in Edinburg. The Leo Pena Placita Park is all lit up at Bus. 83 and Conway in Mission. Enjoy lights, décor, and displays throughout the park. City of McAllen will have their digital tree and oval park lit up at the McAllen Convention Center. Most of the Valley cities will still have their lights on in their main parks throughout Christmas and into January. I invite you to drive around and see the lights, not only in your neighborhood, but your city as well. Have a great and safe New Year!! Photo by Anastasia Brunson

The RGV Annual Chanukah Concert and Festival will be held on Sunday, December 29 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Archer Park, 101 N. Main St. Chanakuh, or Hanukkah, is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the Second Century B.C. Hanukkah is the Hebrew word for “dedication.” The history of the holiday is tied to the time when Israel was struggling for existence. It is believed that after a successful revolt against a tyrannical monarch, the victorious Jewish community could find very little pure olive oil to light the Menorah, only enough for one day. However, the oil lasted for eight days, long enough to purify more oil! Jewish people light a candle on each of the eight evenings in remembrance of God’s provision. The eight cups that hold the Hanukkah candles are arranged in a row, one for each night of the holiday. Every menorah has one additional cup, a ninth cup, which is located in the center or to one side and is usually slightly elevated. The ninth candle is called “the shammash,” or, “one who serves.” Jewish tradition says the purpose of the shammash is that “Judaism gives light to the world.” Come celebrate the holiday tradition in McAllen.

This annual tradition allows people of all ages and skill levels a chance to experience Texas’ wild places through ranger and self-guided walks, bike rides, paddling trips, polar plunges and more in honor of the national initiative aimed at getting people outdoors. Last year, Texas broke not only its historical participation numbers, but it also had the most events, participants and miles hiked of any state. Texas State Parks hosted 177 events where 8,729 people hiked, biked, swam and paddled a record 17,284 miles. The previous statewide record was set January 1, 2023, during Texas State Parks’ Centennial Celebration. “One of the many reasons that I love Texas is the nice weather that we can have even in the winter and there is no better way to spend a beautiful winter day than walking with friends and family at a Texas State Park,” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks. “Please join us and help Texas State Parks once again become the leader in First Day Hike participation and miles walked for 2025. Hope to see you on the trail!” Trails at Texas State Parks range in length and difficulty. Some short, easy trails are perfect for family-friendly scenic strolls, while more strenuous ones can challenge experienced hikers. Trail maps for all Texas State Parks can be found on TPWD’s website, the recently redesigned official https:// tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/app/ and individual park webpages. TPWD strongly encourages anyone planning a trip to a Texas state park to reserve a day pass in advance since some parks are expected to reach their capacity limit. Reserve day passes online through the TPWD reservation website or by calling the Customer Service Center during regular business hours at (512) 389-8900. Anyone with the resolution of visiting multiple state parks in 2025 can purchase a Texas State Parks Pass (TSPP). The $70 TSPP waives entrance fees to all state parks for pass holders and guests in their vehicle for a full year. Additionally, pass holders get discounts on overnight reservations, state park store purchases and more. A list of all First Day Hike events can be found on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department calendar page. Courtesy photo

Christmas traditions and delights MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope it was a very special one for you. At this time of the year, I fondly remember one of my husband’s favorite sayings. Perhaps you have already heard it. If not, then here it is - “Christmas is coming, and the geese are getting fat. Please do put a penny in an old man’s hat. If not a penny, a half penny will do. If not a half penny, God bless you”. We didn’t hear this once, but it was repeated many times during the Christmas season. That little saying packs quite a punch. Sometimes we forget how truly blessed we are while in this land of plenty there are still many families who are struggling as they try to stretch their meager income just to cover the basic necessities. No doubt every family has traditions. Once we had electricity and television, we started the tradition of watching Dickens Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve. We still, after eating homemade chili and tamales, will gather together on Christmas Eve to watch Dickens Christmas Carol with Mr. Scrooge, who finally changes character on Christmas Day. The Mr. Scrooge of today is Grinch and how he stole Christmas. Don’t let him steal your Christmas, it is the most beautiful time of the year. When our children were little, we always had a birthday party during the Christmas season. After all, don’t we celebrate Christmas because it is Christ’s birthday. A birthday cake with candles always graced the table with gifts to the children who came to celebrate. What could be more appropriate than a small manger scene. After the birthday celebration we always went to a local church to view their manger scene. Each child had a small coin to give to the Baby Jesus as their gift to the Christ Child. A delightful drive around the neighborhood to see all the Christmas lights should certainly put you in the Christmas spirit. Another fun and entertaining thing to do is a visit to the little town of Hidalgo that always goes all out with Christmas lights. They also present entertainment at Payne Arena that will steal your heart away. Don’t miss the performance of local school children followed by the choral group from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. This group is made up of young boys, some of whom appear to be no more than four or five years old as well as older students and fathers. Their voices are beautiful. The show begins around 7 p.m. with open seating so plan to arrive a little earlier Some of the seating will be metal chairs. My advice to you is to go prepared with something to put on that cold metal seat and perhaps a blanket to wrap up in as the entertainment is almost always outdoors. Those metal seats are mighty cold on a cold winter night. All sorts of booths offer treats and temptations, and a trolley ride saves walking through a trail of lights. If you wish to go all out, call the arena and buy advance tickets that will include a seated dinner and the trolley ride. The musical entertainment is free, but you need a ticket for dinner and for the trolley ride. ENJOY THIS SEASON WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY!

For many years Bishop Peña displayed the nativity scenes year-round. He considered them not just a seasonal theme, but a reminder of God’s divine love. He enjoyed sharing them with those who visited, using them as a medium through which to express his faith. Inspired visitors often gifted Bishop Peña with additional nativity scenes. A tireless advocate for immigrants and the poor, Bishop Peña lived by a personal creed that became his motto: “do everything with love.” With that love, the museum showcases the collection into early January 2025, with a special Día de los Reyes celebration Saturday, January 4, 2025. May we all love each other this holiday season. Happy Holidays from the Museum of South Texas History. “Bishop Emeritus Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection” will be on exhibit until Sunday, January 5, 2025, which is included in the regular museum admission fee. For more information on the exhibit, please contact Curator of Exhibits Jenarae Bautista at jbautista@mosthistory.org or (956) 383-6911. Visit mosthistory.org/events for the latest information. The Museum of South Texas History is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century.
