We have all been a little sick around here, so as soon as my two visiting children got here, I put one of them to work helping the youngest prepare dinner. They did a great job working together and we had a great Christmas dinner. We forgot to include the pie and the citrus salad – but that means it was available for snacking later and more for breakfast the next day. One tradition that we try to keep each year, for Thanksgiving and Christmas, is a citrus salad. Something that makes me very thankful for the variety of citrus we have in the Valley. I remember my grandfather peeling citrus and separating the meat from the membranes for the salad. He would spend many hours preparing that salad. We have sped up the process by sectioning the fruit – cutting off the top, the bottom, and the cutting off the rest of the rind beThe Mission Historical Museum is now accepting quilt entries for its Turning of the Quilts program, set to take place on February 7. The museum is looking for antique, vintage, or unique quilts to be featured in a special presentation, where each quilt will be revealed and celebrated individually. A knowledgeable presenter will provide historical context and details about each quilt’s story. Quilts can be dropped off at the Mission Historical Museum at 900 Doherty Ave., Mission, from now to January 31, Monday See MHM pg. 15 MHM calls for antique quilts for Turning of the Quilts Courtesy photo A small, but happy, group of quilters at Aladdin Villas, Mission, have found their place by providing warm quilts to children. Over the years they have donated to a colonia in Penitas and to Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). CASA has a Christmas event every year, and this year, 82 children were able to go home with a quilt of their own. The quilts were made by a small group at the park that gets together twice a week all year round. The materials used are mostly donated from people within their community. After a brief hiatus, and the passing of the previous owner Fred Renk, the bullring is back at it with a new owner and lots of updates. As the new owner says, the calls kept coming from people wanting to know when they were going to open. When shows were going to start again. They decided to make their customers happy and begin with a grand show. The grand opening will feature Cayetano Delgado from Monterrey, Mexico. Delgado is not new to Santa Maria Bullring. He grew up in the bullfight world, as his father was a matador, and matador David Renk, ‘El Texano,’ was his godfather. Delgado began his career in the bullfighting world at age 13. He had the help of many people to get where he is today. In a previous story about Delgado, it was said it came to almost $400,000 in five years for Delgado’s travel, training, suits, equipment, food, and everything else he needed to become a matador. He even received training in Spain. He fights with all the defensive training he has received. He continues his style of taking chances with the bulls. Dancing with them in the ring, looking at them straight in the eye before pitching his cape over his head and shoulders, dodging as the bull runs toward him. He has gained a lot of attention through his performances, from fans and press alike. Come and watch him at the Santa Maria Bullring, home of the World Class Bloodless Bullfights. Also performing will be Luigi Mercury from CDMX, Mexico. The matadors will be up against the bulls of Miguel Nunez. Miguel Nunez said the bullring has had a lot of changes. They have updated the stands, put in a stage for entertainment, and tables for VIP. He said it’s like a new place. For those unfamiliar with Santa Maria Bullring, these are bloodless bullfights. Bullfights are always an exciting event. In Hispanic culture the bullfight is considered more like a ballet than a sport because of the intricate moves the matador must make in order to subdue the bull and bring him to the point of the symbolic kill. But there are bulls that refuse to do the ballet and make the bullfight considerably more dangerous for the matador. Here, the matador has to remove a Velcro-attached rose from the bull’s back making the symbolic kill. The Bullring opens at 1 p.m. and the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 5. There will be food, beverages, entertainment and more all afternoon. Make reservations by calling (956) 476-1588. You pay when you arrive. Prices are $40 for the sunny side, and $45 for the shady side. VIP tickets are also available. Santa Maria Bullring is located at 4877 1017 in La Gloria. It is ¼ mile east of FM 755 on FM 1017. The Fourth Annual Members’ Juried Art Show will be on display until January 5. Rompiendo el Cielo will be on exhibit through January 19. The Members Juried Art Show is an opportunity for the community to professionally display their art at IMAS. IMAS members were able to enter up to two pieces of art, where at least one piece would be on display. Art pieces were judged and given awards during the opening ceremony in October. Awards were given for best of show, second place, third place, and three honorable mentions. When the sky’s the limit, what happens when you break the sky? Rompiendo el cielo is an exhibition that features original work by American artist, Uriel Landeros “Conquista.” This exhibition explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, migration, and representation of Indigenous communities in contemporary art. Rompiendo el cielo presents a series of portraits of icons who have in their own right “broken the sky” through their extraordinary achievements. This exhibit also features original works of art from the artist’s private collection by some of the most recognizable names including Pablo Picasso, Banksy, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Julian Schnabel, Tony Shafrazi, Rupert Smith, and Joseph Beuys. IMAS is located at 1900 Nolana Ave. in McAllen. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Call (956) 681-2800 for more information. Brunson Last week I asked readers about their New Year’s Resolutions. I wanted to know if any of our readers still make New Year’s resolutions – and if they do, if they wouldn’t mind sharing some of what they hope for the new year coming. Here is one of the responses I received: “To answer your question on the front page of the December 26 newspaper, ‘’Do you make a NewYear’s resolution?’’ This question made me realize that when I was young it was a very present custom. Now that I’m 81, I realize that this custom seems to have died out. This year the resolution I decided to choose is this: Have more contact with my seven grandchildren. Since I live far away from them, I will call them more often and since I have their email address, I will communicate with them more often because I love them so much. This custom must absolutely continue to be perpetuated because it helps to make us a better person. Nicole Roy Langelier, Québec, Canada” I love what Nicole shared. She pointed out how it is something that we should continue because it makes us better. It makes us set goals to be better people – whether in health, habits, or otherwise – we always seem to set resolutions that are to better ourselves. New Year’s Resolutions has a few origins. One origin is from 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, when life revolved around agrictulure. According to www.becauseisaidiwould.org, ‘Citizens would make promises to the gods for the new year and use this as a moment to return borrowed tools, supplies and equipment. If you kept the promise to the gods, it was said that good fortune would fall upon you.’ Another origin is in 46 BC when Julius Caesar established January 1 as the beginning of the year, the Julian Calendar. January comes from the god Janus, says the website, the god of new beginnings. However it came to be, and for whatever reason you decide to set a New Year’s Resolution, the thought remains the same, that January 1 is a new year, a time to set new goals, a time to refresh.
