It seems like it just started feeling like fall a few weeks ago, and now it’s suddenly feeling like winter. The cool temps are a little welcome, but I could do without the rain and the wind that sometimes comes with it. I’ll take it for now though. I don’t mind enjoying indoor activities for a while. Thankful for not needing to go to the grocery store but maybe once a week and having places where you can play pickleball, and a few other sports, indoors. I also know some parks are inventive with pony and turtle races, and things like chair volleyball. I hope our Winter Texan friends that haven’t made it here yet are coming soon and escaping some of the bad winter weather up north right now. For those still on their way to their south homes – Have a safe trip! We look forward to seeing you. So, how are you doing on any New Year’s Resolutions? I really didn’t set any, but I did try to tell myself I should be more active and reach out to friends more Ron Hoover will host their 18th Annual Open House next week, Thursday, January 16 and Friday, January 17. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days. The annual open house is a very popular event in the Rio Grande Valley, drawing in thousands of people each year. Dustin Hoover said this event is the largest attended dealer open house in the nation, in the RV and marine industries. The event has been known to draw in about 10,000 people during the two-day open house. The Show was held in several locations over the years. The Stenman’s have participated in every show for the past 26 years. In 1998 the show was at the old McAllen Civic Center. It was a fantastic experience for them. When the Civic Center closed, the carving show moved to the Pharr Civic Center. The last number of years the show has been held at the Nomad Shrine Club. This year they have a brand-new venue. See WOODCARVERS pg. 20 RGV Woodcarvers Show moves to new location Woodcarvers offer their carvings at the RGV Woodcarver Show. Photo courtesy of Fred Stenman

Residents of the park worked with the school counselor, Diana Gaona. The park was given a list of needs and wants for five families, a total of 16 children. Through the generosity of the park guests, after they made sure every single want and need had been purchased and wrapped, they still had funds to purchase five-$100 gift cards for five additional families. They were also able to host a pizza party for the entire school where they played “Name that Tune.” About 60 $10 Walmart and McDonald’s gift cards were given away to students during the game. Two students from every class that could name that tune were able to choose the gift card they wanted. Angel Baker, a member of the activities committee at the park, said it was a memorable every for everyone and “one that warmed our hearts.” “Our residents were invited to visit the school and watch their fourth and fifth graders perform ‘Elfish and the Sleigh Riders’,” said Baker, “We were delighted to attend and so enjoyed them.” Celebrate Kansas Day in the RGV Come celebrate Kansas Day in the RGV at a new location this year. Kansas Day will be celebrated Wednesday, January 29 at Peter Piper Pizza, 3101 E. Expressway 83, in Weslaco. It will be returning with a “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes,” concert series this season. From 2006 to 2012, the Shindig Show was a staple Sunday afternoon show in the RGV. First at Bentsen Palm RV Resort, then at Casa Del Sol RV Resort. Elaine Nelson, a well-known entertainer and Hall of Fame member, will be bringing the show back. Elaine is a member of the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame, has performed on Midwest Country Theatre, in Austin, the UK, Branson, in the Chicken House Opry and the Rhinestone Opry. The Chicken House Opry was right here in the RGV from 2007 to 2013. In 2014, Elaine had the Music Valley Theatre, or Rhinestone Opry, that was touted as a foot-tappin’, hand-clappin’, smile-breakin’, memory makin’ show. The show offered classic country music and humor that featured “The Judge,” Cousin Minnie Pearl, and many others. She was voted “Best Female Singer” by the National Traditional Country Music Association, The Austin Country Music Association, and the Texas Country Music Association. Elaine has also been nominated several times for the Valley Star Awards Best Female Singer category. Producer and star of the music variety venue, Elaine, now a fulltime resident of the RGV, is excited to resurrect this fun, engaging Branson-style show. The Hidden Wok: Fast, friendly lunch service with something for everyone With a selection of traditional Chinese dishes, the Hidden Wok has something for everyone. At this small, quaint restaurant in Donna, you can choose from menu entrees – beef and broccoli, kung-pao chicken, orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, or sweet and sour chicken; or if you are looking for something different, try their build your own offerings by selecting your protein of chicken, beef, or shrimp and sauce. All meals are served with either steamed rice or Chow Mein noodles. You can upgrade to fried rice or mixed rice. If you are like me and just can’t seem to decide, you can order one, two, or three entrée plates. We learned the mixed rice was a meal unto itself with generous portions of chicken, beef, and shrimp added to their fried rice made with egg and mixed veggies. We also tried their orange chicken and beef and broccoli. The food was freshly made to order and came out piping hot, and the portion sizes were enough to take some home for dinner that evening. The orange chicken was made with a sweet orange flavored chili sauce which thickened and caramelized to a glaze. The beef and broccoli was served in a rich soy sauce. They also have vegetable egg rolls, but we just didn’t have room enough to try them. On our next visit we’ll have to try those and the noodles with a couple of their other dishes. The Hidden Wok is located at the Val Verde Flea Market, 935 W. Bus. 83 Ste. 20, just around the corner from Biscuits & Gravy Neighborhood Kitchen (entrance is on the west side of the building). Although a bit hidden, thus the name, you can easily find the orange building. They are open Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and closed Monday and Thursday. You can contact them at (956) 5328733. little gospel, appreciation for our veterans, a little family-style humor and a whole lotta fun.
