Lots of fun coming up. We have been seeing the uptick in reunions and meetings this month and next. It’s fun seeing the groups getting together. We hope you send a picture when you have your gatherings. If you are having a Red Hatter event, a reunion, ladies’ lunch, men’s pool group, or anything of the like, we would love to see photos. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Quilt Guild has had a program for many years where quilts have been made and given to veterans who reside in the RGV full time. The military service quilts are red, white, and blue and measure 60” x 72” when finished. What has become known as a “Military Sew Day” is when quilters, as well as other volunteers, meet to construct these cloth masterpieces. On these days, those who attend work together for the single day to complete as much as possible. Wednesday, January 15, the RGV Quilt Guild gathered for the day, as they have for quite a few years, to create military service quilts during a “Military Sew Day” at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo. Quilters from all over the Valley, along with quilters and others from Trophy Gardens, spent the bulk of their day planning, measuring, cutting, sewing, and more as a part of the process of assembling these unique quilts for those who have given so much of themselves to serve our country. Lucy Klaas, who until very recently served as the Chairperson of the RGV Quilt Guild, is a part of the Trophy Gardens community. She promotes the military quilt program in Trophy Gardens as well as throughout the RGV. Lucy explains that the requirements for receiving a military service quilt are that the person is a veteran of any of the branches of the military and also lives full-time in the RGV. Not only has Trophy Gardens supported the Military Service Quilt Program, but the park’s veterans who reside here full-time have also been the appreciative recipients of some of these quilts. This past November on Veterans Day, Lucy, on behalf of the RGV Quilt Guild, presented eleven Trophy Gardens’ veterans with their own handmade quilt. One veteran said that it was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for him. Lucy reminds us that our deserving veterans who meet the residency requirement need to be nominated for a quilt. This may be done by requesting a form from the RGV Quilt Guild or by filling in the online form that may found online at www.rgvqg.com/ forms.html. 5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com JANUARY 22, 2025 College of Fine Arts The Lady and The Outlaw bring their talents to the VSA Another duo gracing the Valley Star Awards stage this year is The Lady and The Outlaw. Regan James and Nan Taylor enjoy performing as The Lady and The Outlaw bringing country, rock and blues from the 1950s to today to the stage. Regan has been performing in the Valley for about 12 years. Regan lives in MN in the summer months with his wife Charlene but has made the Valley his winter home since 2012. Regan has a long history of performing. He plays bass and sings vocals in the band Country Doctors, named Best Country Show 2002. Regan has performed in show with stars likes Ray Price and has played bass guitar for Lynn Anderson, Tommy Cash, Marvin Rainwater, Sherwin Linton, David Church and Connie Lee. He prides himself on his ability to sing all genres of music, including classic country, newer country, and 50s through 80s rock. He believes the most important thing is entertaining the crowd, playing music that keeps the crowd dancing, and learning and performing new songs. He has appeared with David Church on RFD RVs Midwest Country and performed at Tennessee Roadhouse in Alexandria, MN on Connie Lee and Friends. His band Hired Hand was nominated three years in a row in the Favorite Country Band category for the Valley Star Awards and even won the category in 2018 and 2020. Nan Taylor is an experienced vocalist from MI and now resides in Palmview full time. She has been performing professionally since 2010; however she has had the love of singing and entertaining since she was young. She has placed in the top two and won several singing competitions over the years. She also performed as a lounge singer at a popular hotel in Grand Rapids as well as hosted a very successful karaoke show. She has performed at popular venues such as Val Du Lakes, The Amway Grand Plaza, The Crowne Plaza and 131 Hotel as soloist and with others including her former MI band Taylor-Scripps. Nan has an appreciation for every genre of music from blues to classical, but deep down, she is a true rocker. In MI she was dubbed the “Chick with Soul.” She has sung harmonies with the likes of Lindsay Lou and other bands in MI and the Valley. She also enjoys singing with her 80-year-old mother, Sharon Graham Swiggum. Her great-grandmother was a lounge singer back in the day. So, music is in her blood and throughout her mother’s side of the family. Regan James and Nan Taylor perform together and individually throughout the Valley. They say that no venue is too big or too small. You can find The Lady and The Outlaw on Facebook and come and hear them for yourself at the Valley Star Awards on February 12. The Lady & The Outlaw. 7 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com JANUARY 22, 2025 Duo brings passion for country music to VSA stage As we are gearing up for this year’s Valley Star Awards, we will be introducing you to our entertainers for the show. Kiley & Company have been performing a numbers of years, including jams like Maude’s Jams, and others. Kiley & Company is a two-piece band featuring Kiley Barwick on lead vocals and rhythm guitar and Blaine Garrelts on pedal steel, lead guitar and harmony vocals. Classic county music is their passion and even though this kind of music has become harder to come by over the year, their goal is to keep it alive as long as they can. Blaine and Kiley have been working together for over 10 years covering classic country music artists such as Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Connie Smith, Johnny Cash and many more. They strive to provide their listeners with high quality music and a vintage sound while covering songs that are sure to take the audience back in time. Both Blaine and Kiley’s passion for music started at a young age, making their combined years of experience playing music well over 90 years. This experience, combined with their obsession with music, makes this duo an unforgettable experience that you don’t want to miss. Kiley started her interest in music at three years old. From there she started singing, eventually graduating to playing the drums and rock ‘n roll music. It was county music that was her favorite though, and she eventually started singing and performing in jams and a band – where she met Blaine. Although she was always interested in the guitar, she didn’t start learning it until she was gifted one by her father in 2015. Since she already knew Blaine was an accomplished guitar player, she asked him to teach her. And hence, the love for playing guitar and singing really took off. In the past 18 months, Kiley has signed with Suntone Records and has released four of her own original songs as singles. They should be available on all streaming platforms this month. Blaine is a self-taught musician. Even now he cannot read sheet music – but that doesn’t make him any less talented. He plays by ear, and always has, even as a child. His mom sang and his dad played the accordion. He started on the ukulele before graduating to guitar. At 13, he started his own band playing rock ‘n roll, but he says ‘rock ‘n roll music was okay, but country music has always been where my heart is.’After high school, he supported his family by playing music while attending barber college. He played country music with a friend nearly six nights a week throughout the entire front range of Colorado for several years. Eventually, he bought the family farm, moving back to Nebraska, playing whenever he could. In November of 2024, Blaine had the honor of being inducted See DUO pg. 18 Kiley & Company. Courtesy photo

Winter Texans and others took advantage of that nice weather and made it out to the Ron Hoover Open House. They also took advantage of the great deals Ron Hoover was having throughout the event. The event featured the latest in RV fifth wheels, motor homes, boats, cargo trailers, and more. Visitors were treated to free hotdogs, drinks, and a free T-shirt, along with chances to win door prizes and a grand prize drawing at the end of both afternoons of the open house. The open house included many vendors with a variety of products. Many RV and motorhome vendors were set up inside to answer questions from visitors. Salespeople could be seen walking with visitors, talking about products, and showing them the homes. Harry and Margie Funk, IN Winter Texans that are currently staying at Lazy Palms Ranch RV Park, are full-time RVers. They said they saw the event in the Winter Texan Times and decided to visit, and bring three other couples with them. Even though they are full-time RVers, Harry said they are looking at alternatives for when they decide to settle down. They were looking at the few older models that were on the lot. Funk shared that he was one of the first 100 employees for Jayco many years ago. They also shared that they love coming to the Valley because of the weather and the community in their park. Others came to see the many options available and to see if it was time to trade up. It is obvious that the open house event remains a popular event among the Valley’s Winter Texans. They had a chance to have some food, visit with friends, enjoy some music, and look at some beautiful homes. Harry & Margie Funk. Photo by Carina Brunson Ron Hoover Open House. One of them is a quilt exhibition and the other is an exhibition on the Texas Cowboy. HAHM invites visitors to stop by this year’s Quilt Show 2025 featuring Llano Grande Quilting Bee. These beautiful quilts are on exhibit through March 15. The quilt were made by residents at Llano Grande RV Resort. A reception will be held on February 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. HAHM presents “Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy,” an exhibition created by the Wittliff Collections at the Alkek Library, Texas State University-San Marcos, presented in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities. This exhibition is made possible in part by a We the People grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In the early 1970s, noted Texas historian Joe Frantz offered Bill Wittliff a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—to visit a ranch in northern Mexico where the vaqueros still worked cattle in traditional ways. Wittliff photographed the vaqueros as they went about daily chores that had changed little since the first Mexican cowherders learned to work cattle from a horse’s back. Wittliff captured a way of life that now exists only in memory and in the photographs included in this exhibition. The exhibition features photographs with bilingual narrative text that reveal the muscle, sweat and drama that went into roping a calf in thick brush or breaking a wild horse in the saddle. The exhibition is on display through February 18. HAHM hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays. Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, traveling exhibitions and documentary films.
