Thanks to the fast-acting attendees, activity director, and the Coast Guard, a man’s life was saved. As James Kropenske put it, they were very fortunate that everything happened the way it did, there were people on hand to assist, and they had an AED in the building. The Alamo Chamber of Commerce sponsored parade drew a large crowd of mostly residents from Winter Ranch and Trophy Gardens RV Parks in Alamo. The parade was to honor Alamo resident Irene Martinez, who has been a faithful parade spectator for many years, but not able to come this year. And the parade honors the memory of those Texans who declared independence from Mexico in 1836 and also commemorates the 13day siege inspiring the message to “Remember the Alamo” in San Antonio, where 189 defenders died 189 years ago. The two RV parks dominated the parade entries and received lots of applause from the spectators mainly lining Business 83 along the north side of Central Park. The parks’ members also took home the trophies with the grand overall going to Winter Ranch participants. A first place trophy was garnered by the combined line dance team from the two parks, with second place belonging to a Fiesta style Trophy Gardens float with riders Linda, Keri Lynn and Glyn, and third place went to a decorated golf cart with Connie and Colleen from Trophy Gardens. After the trophy presentations and earlier comments by Mayor J.R. Garza, city commissioners, and Albert Rodriguez, chamber of commerce chairman and “Citizen of the Year” recipient, the line dancers added another performance to close out the day’s parade program. Among the spectators was Winter Texan Kathy Maynard, an 18year Winter Ranch resident whose husband Scott was in the parade with the line dancers. Kathy, who was primarily a secretary before retiring, lives the summers in Michigan. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities. You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials, and the wonderful Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing country-western dances. If your preference is rockn-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed there either. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville, and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas. The Winter Texan Times will be publishing our annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 12 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today to reserve some papers just for you. Most people take extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends and even leave a few here and there at KOA’s along their route north. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. If you are able to take 50 papers or more, give us a call at (956) 580-7800 before close of business on March 7 and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need on March 12. If you are leaving before March 12, take some extra copies of today’s paper, to share with the folks back home. 2024 Winter Texan Fiesta attendees. Photo by William Brunson

This powerful initiative, taking place from March 3 to 9, unites advocates, historians, and descendants of enslaved people to commemorate an often-overlooked chapter of Black and Latino history. Honoring the Legacy of Freedom Seekers The “Walking Southern Roads to Freedom” event highlights the Underground Railroad to Mexico, a lesser known but vital route used by enslaved individuals who sought refuge in Mexico, where slavery was abolished in the 1830s. Participants, including faith leaders, artists, and historians from across the country, will embark on a week-long walk, beginning at La Sal del Rey in Hidalgo County and passing through historic sites tied to this movement. The journey will culminate in McAllen, Texas, with a special stop in Mexico to honor the country’s role in providing sanctuary to freedom seekers. “We are proud to host the participants of this historic journey,” said Francisco Guajardo, Chief Executive Officer of the Museum of South Texas History. “This event is a powerful opportunity to engage in dialogue, honor the resilience of freedom seekers, and reflect on the deep connections between African American and Latino histories.” A Gathering of Scholars, Descendants, and Advocates The reception at the MOSTH will offer participants a space to share their experiences, discuss the significance of the walk, and engage with the local community. Guests will include historians and scholars specializing in the Underground Railroad to Mexico, descendants of those who escaped slavery through South Texas, representatives from the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center in Maryland, and artists and faith leaders committed to preserving this history. Why This Matters The event is the result of groundbreaking research led by Roseann Bacha-Garza, program manager for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS). Her work has played a key role in raising awareness of South Texas’ connection to the Underground Railroad, particularly through sites like Jackson Ranch Church and Martin Jackson Cemetery in San Juan. These locations recently received a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom designation from the U.S. National Park Service. The event will be held on Friday, March 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. MOSTH invites the public to join this historic gathering, learn about South Texas’ role in the Underground Railroad, and connect with those dedicated to preserving this vital history. Edinburg Parks and Recreation is hosting the 9th Annual Cardboard Regatta competition, which promises to be an exhilarating experience for participants and spectators alike. This unique event will take place on Friday, March 14 at 6 p.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Pool and aims to bring the community together for an evening filled with fun, teamwork, and friendly competition. The Cardboard Regatta encourages participants to design and build their own watercraft using only corrugated cardboard and duct tape. This challenge requires teams to demonstrate their engineering skills, creativity, and innovation as they construct vessels capable of floating and racing across the water. The event is open to three age groups: children (6-12 years), teens (13-17 years) and adults (18 & up), making it a fantastic opportunity for families, friends, and colleagues to come together and enjoy some outdoor excitement. Registration forms may be picked up in person at the Edinburg Sports & Wellness Center at 315 Mark S. Pena Dr., or citizens can request a registration form via email (lucasrodriguez@ cityofedinburg.com). The Cardboard Regatta Competition will not only provide an enjoyable experience for the participants but also offer spectators a chance to witness the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the teams as they navigate their cardboard vessels through the water. Registration closes Friday, March 7 at 5 p.m. Boats must be completed and checked between March 12 through 13 at 6 p.m. at the Edinburg Activity Center, 123 E. Mark S. Pena Dr. Boats may not exceed six feet in length and four feet in width. No height restriction. Boats must be built entirely from corrugated cardboard and duct tape only. No solid cardboard or any other materials allowed. Boats may be decorated and painted. For more information and full boat building rules, contact (956) 381-5631. to 3:30 p.m. Join the park for a ranger-led tour through the park searching for these beautiful insects, some found nowhere else but in south Texas. Visitors will go on a ranger-led tour which might include stargazing, owls, scorpions, tarantulas, alligators, frogs, bats and more. Dotted with nine courses from Mission to North Edinburg, the Upper Valley is as close to a “Who’s Who” directory than any other area in Deep South Texas. Los Lagos, Champion Lakes and Tierra Del Sol came out as the Winter Texans’ favorite courses a year ago and they are all beautifully laid out, have all been worked on to keep their golf-ish figure intact and provide a wide array of great golf, great views and, most importantly (just joking) great food. Los Lagos maybe heads the list as the most uniquely designed golf course throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Moguls fill the course, something you won’t see anywhere else – especially not in the abundance as it is here. The undulating fairways add to the challenge/ charm and epic ponds that should be compared to Greek and Roman mythological sirens, similarly, luring golf balls to their deaths. Undulating fairways just adds to the strategy for golfers, who can attack most holes in multiple fashion, especially when faced with one of Los Lagos’ many doglegs leaving you with the option of cutting off as much of it as you can or just play it straight. Aided by a never-ending wind that seemingly is in your face no matter which way you are facing, this course, which has five sets of tees ranging from 7,188 yards at the blacks to 5,561 from the reds, is challenging to say the least, but it’s also amazingly fun from the No. 1 tee to the No. 18 green. This should be high on your bucket list. Champion Lakes, formerly known as Palm View, just keeps being a premier destination for golfers. It seems that the course is never in bad shape – only good to great. It is now the home of the UTRGV golf team, with their very own clubhouse. Nobody has been able to keep up with the Valley’s golf Joneses – Champion Lakes – in a long time. Espinosa is known for reaching out to Winter Texan golfers to see what the course could do to improve it in their eyes. The results have made this course among the nicest in South Texas and they continue to find ways to make it better. Houston Rockets center Willie Cauley-Stein, an NBA veteran of more than 700 career games, once said that Champion Lakes was one of the “nicest courses I’ve ever played and with, by far, the best greens ever. They were so true and at perfect speed. It was a lot of fun.” The course holds some of the premier tournaments in South Texas including the McAllen City Amateur and the VAMOS fundraiser. Yet, Winter Texan golfers just call it home. Tierra del Sol is not the same golf course you may remember, especially if you haven’t visited it recently. The course, run by the City of Pharr, spent $1 million in renovations several years ago, transforming the course from a rough, brown-heavy 18-hole facility to one of the greenest and nicest in the Rio Grande Valley. Among the many improvements were a new sprinkler system, tee to green cart paths, new grass, the leveling of tee boxes and a retaining box on No. 6, where golfers must carry water from a peninsula-style tee box. They have since continued to upgrade all areas. The course is a mixture of grip-it and rip it holes combined with placement-is-key holes. There are not a lot of trees to contend with, as is the case with most courses in the Rio Grande Valley, there’s plenty of wind to make it the primary hazard. The next biggest challenge here is water, which golfers will face on most holes. Golfers can catch a double whammy on the course’s signature hole, No. 5, a 400yard plus par-4 with water along the right and out of bounds on the left. Catching the wind on this hole could turn it into a bogey or worse score in no time at all. Playing from the back, black tees the course will carry 6,700 yards or more, Champion Lakes Golf Course.
