The day ended up being quite warm after the wind stopped and the clouds parted, letting the sunshine through to the crowd of people at Leo Pena Placita Park in Mission. The many booths at the event were busy too. There were several food, drink and treat vendors, along with several businesses. Photo by Henry Miller, 2021 It’s been one heck of a week. We have been busy getting everything ready for our end of season issues. We just had the Winter Texan Fiesta last week and it was a blast – it got warm, but it was fun. We were out there wishing that the breeze had stayed a little longer as the clouds parted, and the sun came out. I can’t believe we only have two more issues after this one. This one is one of our special editions. It is our Take Home Edition. In it we feature why so many Winter Texans choose the Rio Grande Valley as their home away from home. You can find stories about the many reasons why the Valley is a favorite and why you keep coming back year after year. Also in this issue, you will find a submission that Mission Bell/Tradewinds featured at their park. They recently asked their residents to submit what they thought a Winter Texan was. We were given permission to use the winner that was published in their newsletter. As a reminder – today is the

If you’re not into visiting during the month of March, there is plenty of time to visit on your way back up north. Texas State Parks still have day-use and overnight availability for anyone looking for an outdoor adventure. “Spring is a special time to get outside, with warmer temperatures and blooming wildflowers — parks are perfect places to experience both,” said Tara Humphreys, director of interpretation for Texas State Parks. “We are excited to welcome visitors and showcase our parks and encourage every Texan to ‘take a walk on the wild side’ and visit a Texas State Park.” Here are some tips from TPWD staff to make your Spring Break visit to a Texas State Park one for the books: • Reserve passes online: Day passes and overnight camping reservations can be booked in advance for any Texas State Park though the TPWD website. Through the online portal, you can narrow your search by city, activity and even by site. If you want to bike, hike or fish, look for parks with day passes available (up to 30 days in advance). For overnight camping, search the “Camping This Weekend” tab to see which parks have sites open for the upcoming Friday and Saturday. • Check the weather: Texas is notorious for wacky weather, so be sure to check the forecast before hitting the road. Spring storms can sweep in unexpectedly. We recommend having a backup plan in case Mother Nature throws a wrench into your outdoor plans. • Wear proper clothing: Flipflops may be comfortable, but they aren’t the best option for long walks on the trail. Rangers recommend wearing sneakers or boots for hikes. Don’t forget the sunscreen, insect repellant and plenty of water. It’s important to drink at least 16 ounces of water every hour to prevent dehydration. Bring enough for your four-legged family members, too! • Participate in a park program or activity: Park staff will be hosting many guided activities during spring break, including bird walks, kayaking tours, archery 101 classes, arts and crafts, yoga in the park and cooking demos, just to name a few. A complete list of activities can be found on the TPWD calendar page. Looking for a specific activity? Check the “Activities” page for recommendations. Visitors will also have many other activities to choose from outside of the scheduled programs, including geocaching, the Junior Ranger Program and strolls on the trails. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or want to try fishing for the first time, we encourage you to take advantage of the free fishing at state parks (no license required). And what better time to do that than during spring break when the white-bass run is going strong? See TIPS pg. 23 Palmetto State Park. Photo by Daniel Brunson

Rio Grande Valley parks feature top Wintertainers™ The Rio Grande Valley’s Winter Texan scene isn’t the quiet, gem in the rough secret that it once was. For the winter visitors, that’s a good thing – especially when it comes to entertainment. Winter Texans are known for having fun. The Valley provides tons of it too. More and more Wintertainers™ are coming to the Valley to entertain Winter Texans. The growth can be attributed to entertainers like Gordy and Debbie who came to the Valley nearly 15 years ago and were an immediate hit. When they returned home, they spread the word and brought some friends down. Many other entertainers are still sharing the good news with others that the Valley is a place to be. While there’s Branson, MO, a place where many of the visiting entertainers play regularly and is known for its great entertainment, the Valley’s Wintertainers™ also come from Nashville and Las Vegas, and from other states where talented individuals, duos, or groups are usually looking to escape the gloomy, cold, and snowy north. Bruce Boudreau, a Canadian recording country music artist is one of the newer men to the game. He has made quite an impression in his short time coming to the Valley winning Male Vocalist of the Year last year, and Duo Group of the Year with his American friend/ partner Tom Hiles. Other popular Wintertainers™ include Rick McEwen, Steven May, Dale and Gayle, Mountain Highway, Redneck Revival, Ron Moshier and Mark Merchant. And that is just to name a few. There are too many to mention that visit the Valley just to have fun with the Winter Texans. These individuals perform at the parks throughout the Valley. The cost is typically in the $7 to $10 range while the same show in Florida or Arizona will cost $10 to $15 and in Branson – a mini-Nashville if you will – the cost could be $30 to $50 or more for the same show. Dancing the Night Away Of course, the Winter Texans aren’t kids anymore – but they can certainly handle their own when it comes to dancing. Whether it’s line dancing, square dancing, waltzes, cha-chas, jitterbugs, or anything else, these visitors know how to make a dance floor come alive. For Winter Texans who prefer to dance, a dance can be found See ENTERTAINMENT pg. 23 Activity directors create fun-packed schedules of entertainment at the parks throughout the Rio Grande Valley that bring dancers to the dance floor. They asked for submissions on what their residents thought a Winter Texan was. Bob McBain won first place and was featured in their newsletter. We were given permission to republish the article. By Bob McBain Being a Winter Texan means a lot of things to different people. First most people think of Winter Texans as just another version of Snowbirds. People who flee the wintry weather and go south, like migrating birds. And that is what I thought as well, until I retired and tried the Snowbird life. I had visited Arizona during the winter months before I retired, but there was nothing to make me want to be a Snowbird and migrate to Arizona. Then I visited my brother in March 2014, who was a Winter Texan at that time, and it was so different. The people were friendly, warm, See WINTER TEXAN pg. 22 Bob McBain. Courtesy photo

HARLINGEN, TEXAS WWW.HCTVALLEYSTARS.ORG TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE WWW.HCTVALLEYSTARS.ORG Winter Texans feel safe in the RGV For decades, the Rio Grande Valley of Texas has been a favorite destination for retirees from the Midwest and Canada looking to head south for the winter to escape the snow, ice and cold, harsh weather. In addition to the warm, semi-tropical climate here in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), Winter Texans frequently tell us they enjoy the friendly people here, the many activities available to enjoy in the mobile home and RV parks and resorts, and the camaraderie with other Winter Texans who spend three to six months in South Texas each winter. Besides the warm weather, they come because it’s fun! But is it safe? With all the news about immigrants and border walls, some folks up north have wondered if it is safe to come down to South Texas for the winter. If you talk to some of the residents at Chimney Park RV Resort in Mission, they will tell you how safe they feel. The park is located right on the Rio Grande River in Mission. James Kropenske of Chimney Park said he believes it to be one of the safest places in the United States. Located on the river, the park has a boat dock. The US Border Patrol, Texas Game Wardens, and Coast Guard, all use the dock to get their boats out on the river, so their presence is constant in the park. Any time of day, you can look out and see the Border Patrol driving through. James said, he doesn’t mind that at all, and neither do other residents. In fact, they have included law enforcement in their activities at the park. The individuals are always invited to lunches and other meals. They have worked out a plan for them to get half price meals – the meals are often paid for by residents that chip in, or pay the other half, so the park is never losing out on offering the meals at a discounted rate. They have even had the explorer groups – young cadets – participate in service projects in the area. Cathy Sutton, who is at Seven Oaks Resort just a few miles away from Chimney Park, said she did a lot of research before taking the job in the Valley five years ago. She quickly learned it was the opposite of what all the news reports said about the border. “It just isn’t happening here,” said Sutton of the border crossings and criminal activity. If it is, it isn’t happening anywhere close to them. She did mention she would almost be excited for some action to take place, but she is happy that it’s really quiet and the residents feel safe living there. Several cities in the Valley – Pharr, McAllen, Brownsville, Edinburg and Mission – are often found in the top safest cities in the US and Texas. But not only are you safe on this side of the border. 11 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com MARCH 12, 2025 You’ll receive a warm welcome in Texas Time and again, Winter Texans list friendliness as big a reason to live here. Not only does that include their neighbors in the park or other parks, but also the people in the community who are happy to have Winter Texans because they appreciate the economic and other benefits they bring to the Valley. Alan Johnston remembers coming to the Rio Grande Valley from Minnesota over 30 years ago. One of the first things Johnston saw were signs that said, “Welcome Back Winter Texans.” After the couple’s unimpressive experiences in Arizona and Florida the previous two seasons, the warm welcome in South Texas was just what they needed. The friendly people here made them feel right at home. “We went to Florida first and the people on the East Coast, they were too much, and the ones on the West Coast said, ‘When are you going to go back to Minnesota.’” Johnston said while the couple enjoyed a local event last year. “Then the next year, we went to Phoenix, and It’s the weather that brings them back The beautiful subtropical weather of South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley is definitely one of the biggest attractions for Winter Texans. There could be as much as a 100-degree difference between South Texas and places like Northern Minnesota or South Dakota. The Rio Grande Valley is definitely a joy to live in, especially if the other option includes snow, ice and all things frozen. The average high between December and February runs from 70-74 degrees (but can reach into the 80s) and lows are generally between 49 and 54 – with the token warning once or twice a year that a frost is on its way, sending fulltime residents scurrying to cover their outdoor plants. The mild winter temperatures – and no snow – allows folks to get out and be active during the winter months. For Winter Texans that means playing golf, racing RC cars, playing pickleball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, cycling, bird watching and many other outdoor activities – often with temperatures in the 70s. Wayne Watts said, in 2018, he would be back home right now Get more for your dollar in the Valley As our winter visitors come to the Valley, it seems they are more frugal when it comes to where they go. They want to have a great time, but they don’t want to spend the money they’ve saved and earned to go just toward living expenses. They want to live it up – from dances and shows to trips to South Padre Island and Nuevo Progreso, Mexico and, of course all the free events that take place on a daily occurrence at the RV resorts. Progreso is as much a Winter Texan hotspot as any place on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande. Arts, crafts, medicine as well as deliciously prepared adult beverages and a world of exquisite fajitas, Visit the Rio Grande Valley we couldn’t get a place to park our motorhome unless we were going to stay for a month. That snobbishness didn’t appeal to us.” As new Winter Texans get situated in their park, they are already making new friends. Those open arms and friendly, caring faces are a big reason that Winter Texans Progreso Winter Tourist Appreciation Day, 2018. Photo by Herb Moering Winter Texans shopping at Don Wes Flea Market. The City of Palmhurst welcomes you The City of Palmhurst played an important role in bringing visitors to the Valley, playing an integral part in what it is today. It continues to invite visitors to enjoy its scenery, history, community, and favorable climate. One of the biggest historical aspects of Palmhurst is the John Shary Mansion. Although the John Shary Mansion is not open for public tours, no visit to the Rio Grande Valley would be complete without driving by the Shary mansion, located three-and-a-half miles North Shary Road, just down the road from the City of Palmhurst offices. The former residence of John Shary, who is credited with founding the Texas Citrus Industry, the mansion sits in the middle of acres of citrus. Shary was also a land developer who was responsible for bringing many northern farmers to the area. He ran land expositions where farmers came on the train from the north. Shary built his mansion in 1917 to act as a showplace for what the Rio Grande Valley could be when the citrus industry took hold. The orchards surrounding the house were used to inspire those who came on the trains to buy land and help create a citrus empire. The lake beside the house was once used for swimming by those who toured the area. Across the street from the mansion is a private mausoleum where Shary and his wife are buried. The Hidalgo Pumphouse houses machinery used to develop the local area centuries ago. Historically this site tells how this area, once undeveloped, played a major role in sustaining the life of the people who called the border region home. As visitors learn about the past, they can also enjoy the beautiful array of bird species which either call this World Birding Center site home or use it in their migration flights. In terms of shopping, Palmhurst offers both local merchants and businesses that are recognized Nationwide. Most of the businesses are located at Three Mile and Conway, where you will find just about everything you need. The local businesses provide an array of merchandise to satisfy all the needs and wants of consumers; meanwhile, the larger merchants provide a sense of respect and community within the City of Palmhurst. And if you can’t find it in Palmhurst, McAllen and Mission are close by where you can find more history of the area, museums, entertainment and more. The City of Palmhurst, even with its growth and goal of providing all the needs of the community with developing businesses in the area, you can still enjoy a serene, community atmosphere while in the city. The City of Palmhurst boasts two Winter Texan RV Parks that have activities all season long and feature a quaint life and atmosphere. The city welcomes you to come visit and make yourself at home in Palmhurst. Shary Mansion. Photo by Doug Young

If they were still up north, they would be stuck inside during snowstorms, and wouldn’t have much to do but a few indoor activities when it is too cold outside. The only activity they would really get is shoveling snow, and that is something they don’t want to be doing. So, they come to south Texas so that can have a wide variety of activities to choose from. Because of the warmer climate, and predominantly dry season, Winter Texans have a full range of outdoor activities they can participate in while in south Texas from October through March. One of the most popular activities is golf. Many of the resorts in the Rio Grande Valley have a golf course, and if yours doesn’t, there are still plenty to choose from. There are top notch golf courses and Winter Texans have been known to try them all out and pick favorites. Another popular sport is pickleball. Several parks have added courts to their facilities and parks and recreation departments throughout the Valley have found a benefit in adding it to their city amenities as well. Some parks have an annual mixer, while others have weekly games. Some parks even have nice indoor air-conditioned courts as well. Most parks also have set times for open play and for the various skill levels from beginners to advanced-skilled players. Sports and other active hobbies like cards, pool, and even baking have become so popular in the Winter Texan community, that the City of McAllen has the Golden Age Olympics. The Olympics is designed for the senior community and offers dozens of active and not so active events that seniors – Winter Texans and locals – can compete in. There are also bicycling groups, birdwatching groups, and those that get together for pool aerobics. If you want to stay active during the winter months, south Texas is where you want to be. And if being outside, or sporty, isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other things to do. There are social clubs to participate in – the Red Hatters being a huge one – but there are also other lady and men clubs, supper nights, luncheons, and craft shows. Many parks have craft groups with woodworking, stained glass art, painting classes, and more that offer a wide range of activities you can participate in. You can even find rock clubs, R/C racing, line dancing – you name it, I bet you can find what you are looking for. Something special Winter Texans take from this, and what we see when we are out and about, is that they not only stay active, but they also make long-lasting friendships. Bicycling groups can be found in many areas. Photo by Henry Miller

WELCOME From pg. 11 WEATHER From pg. 11 stay, and share word of how much they enjoy their new – or returning – winter home. Larry Boggs, a Winter Texan who hails from Branson, MO said, “They welcome you with open arms from the moment you get here. We have made so many friends here. We have more friends here than we do back home.” “We’ve been to Florida,” said Darlene Neel, of Tinley Park, IL, as she and her husband spent a winter at Chimney Park in Mission. When they were looking for a place to move, they checked out both Florida and Arizona – and the decision to come to South Texas was an easy one. “It’s not anywhere near as friendly [as Texas].” Johnston said the friendliness isn’t limited to the folks in the parks, but it is just a part of the local culture in the community as well. He said it feels very much like that Midwestern hospitality that he’s used to. “We love it because it’s not a (typical) tourist area; it’s a place that we feel very comfortable, and people have the Midwest values. God bless the Valley! We just love it here!” There are “Welcome Home” fiestas as winter guests begin to arrive in the Fall. Most RGV communities host “Winter Texan Appreciation” events at the end of the winter season as well. Business owners and government officials will talk about relationships that were built, commonly calling the winter visitors more than just part-time visitors. “We’ve built relationships with so many of them,” said Jennifer Hart, co-owner with her husband of the popular Riverside Club along the Rio Grande in Mission. “A lot of them have truly become like family to us.” Texas even coined the endearing name “Winter Texan” for those adopted Texans from up north. shoveling snow and feeding the horses. Instead, he was outdoors watching his Winter Texan friends playing softball. “The weather here is perfect – you can do a lot in this weather,” he said. “But when you feed the horses you gotta go back out and clean what they ate.” Virgil Kappes said he heard a person could add 10 years to his or her life by wintering in the Valley, away from the miserable cold weather. Not only is there joy in leaving the frozen tundras, but there are also health benefits. Jim McDermid of MN said he has heart and vascular disease and in the Valley the weather is good enough that he can walk almost every day and the land is flat enough that he does not have to climb while he walks. Ed Martens, who used to run the Senior Texan Softball League and its all-star games every March, said (in 2019) he has benefited from his years of living in the Valley, even though he may not be playing softball anymore. “It keeps me active,” he said. “There’s no way I want to live where it’s snowing and frozen. I love that we can play softball pretty much all year.” The nation’s warmest “Polar Bear Dip” also takes place on South Padre Island every January 1. Hundreds of Winter Texans join locals sprinting into the Gulf for a quick plunge. The event is highly popular in areas where the courageous jump into 35-degree water. That’s something that South Texas “dippers” don’t have to worry about. The weather is also perfect for golf during the Winter Texan months. Several parks have groups that schedule scrambles on a weekly basis to play on one of more than 20 different courses spread throughout the Valley.
