WELCOME BACK! We’re Glad You’re Here! Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 39, No. 2 © 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, November 5, 2025 The Rio Grande Valley, as do many areas across the country, go out of their way to pay tribute to Veterans on, or around, Veterans Day. Veterans Day honors all who have served in the United States Armed Forces acknowledging their sacrifice, courage, and dedication to the country. While its origin lies in Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, recognizing the cessation of hostilities, was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. It is now a celebration of everyone who has worn the military uniform, regardless of whether they served in wartime or peaceINDEX Events Calendar p 5 Reunions p 5 Parks Calendar p 8 WintertainersTM p 9 On The Road p 13 Business Guide p 16 Classifieds p 17 Coupon Index p 18 Taste of the Valley p 19 Rina’s Ramblings See RAMBLINGS pg. 16 The McAllen Wind Ensemble proudly opens its 2025–2026 concert season with “Duty, Honor, Country,” a powerful evening dedicated to the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who defend our freedom. The concert will take place on Tuesday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. This performance goes beyond the music — it’s a heartfelt tribute to America’s heroes. I hope everyone has had a wonderful week and has recovered from their Halloween shenanigans. Parks were busy throughout the week hosting their Halloween events. It looks like many reveled in the chance to dress up for the dances at their parks. There were many photos shared by parks and entertainers on Facebook. It was a joy to see so many of you returning to the Valley and having fun already. Next week is Veterans Day. We have a few places that are having events to honor Veterans around the Valley. If your park is holding an event – please send a photo or two so we can show our readers what you did at your park. We like hearing the stories of our Veterans that live in the parks, that visit us each year and seeing how they are being honored for their service. Earlier this summer, Tom Hollan from Aladdin Villas wanted to give back to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), but he sought a local chapter. Previously, residents would collect pop tabs and make monetary donations but would return the donations to a chapter up north. “I knew Ronald McDonald House Charities collected pop tabs, and when I took over the operations, I researched where they actually went, and I wanted to help local kids,” said Tom Hollan. “We’re all grandmas and great grandmas, so we want to help kids,” said Ruth Kaloway, another Aladdin Villas resident. “We can’t imagine what families go through. Being older, we are all too familiar with hospitals, and to have a child in a hospital … it’s just heartbreaking.” Another resident, Ron Platow, said his sister had experience with RMHC. His niece and nephew were seeking long-term treatment at University of Minnesota Hospital. The family stayed at a Ronald McDonald House, and it was a lifesaver for them. Pop tabs are recycled for cash that is used to help support families while they stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Corpus Christi or the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in Edinburg and Harlingen. Anyone can save a pop tab from their soda cans they drink. Can you imagine how many you can save if it becomes a habit at dances and entertainment at the parks? You can use anything to collect them in as well – a zip-loc bag, plastic bin, shoe box, or a milk jug, as we had many parks do several years ago when Anastasia (WTT office manager) put a call out when she had a school friend in need. Tom looks forward to the winter months when his community will have returning Winter Texans visiting the RGV with hopes of being able to give more. Since he began in June, Tom has returned with pop tabs and items on the RMHC South Texas wish list with books, crayons, and other supplies for children to use while seeking treatment at the hospital. Aladdin Villas consists of 492 houses, with over 750 in population. Tom knows with his Winter Texan friends coming back, there is so much more they can do for the charity. When asked why they moved down to the RGV, Tom and his colleagues said, “We love the RGV community.” There are many other ways you can help out. As Tom has done, there is a wish list on their website that includes things such as kitchen items, cleaning supplies, microSee RMHC pg. 3 Tom Hollan and other Aladdin Villas residents present Miriam Gelman with their most recent donation in September. NOVEMBER 5, 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com 6 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Veterans get free admission to State Historic Sites AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Historical Commission (THC) announces that veterans of the Armed Forces will be granted free entry to all state-operated historic sites on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11. Waiving entry fees for veterans provides the THC an opportunity to extend its appreciation for their service and sacrifice. The THC preserves and operates 42 state historic sites across Texas. To find out where they are located, go to https://thc. texas.gov/historic-sites. Veterans receive reduced admission to the agency’s state historic sites year-round, and active-duty military members receive free admission year-round. Lights Out to protect migratory birds Each year, nearly two billion birds migrate through the Lone Star State. Many of the migratory species use the night sky as a tool to navigate through the state and back to their homes and breeding grounds. However, nighttime light pollution has become a growing challenge for many birds, leading to high rates of building strikes and migratory bird deaths. Lights Out, Texas! is an initiative focused on reducing bird losses by enlisting the help of Texans. As millions of birds pass through Texas during peak fall migration season, Texas A&M AgriLife is taking concrete action to help ensure their safe passage and calling on the community to join the effort. Texas A&M AgriLife is participating in the statewide Lights Out, Texas! campaign, asking staff and the public to turn off nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. now through November 30. This simple action addresses a serious threat: artificial light at night disorients migrating birds, causing deadly collisions with buildings and disrupting their critical twice-yearly journeys. Othe guidelines are not to use landscape lighting to light up trees or gardens where birds might be resting. Also, close blinds at night to reduce the amount of light being emitted from windows. For essential lights aim lights down or use lighting shields to avoid light shining into the sky or trees. You can also use motion detectors and sensors, so lights are only on when you need them. Birds are vitally important to the environment and benefit us in a variety of ways. Turning off non-essential lights or shielding essential ones is also good for people. Artificial Lights At Night (ALAN) can negatively impact our health from sleep deprivation to depression to heart disease. By turning off lights, we protect birds, and ourselves. It’s a win-win. Birds can’t see glass. Instead, they see whatever happens to be reflected in its mirror-like surface as a continuation of habitat and clear glass as an open passageway. It’s estimated that between one hundred million and one billion birds die every year in collisions with manmade structures. Bird-safe glass is specially designed to make glass a visible obstacle to birds. A variety of approaches, such as fritting, silk-screening, or ultraviolet coating, create a pattern that breaks up the reflectivity of the glass and See LIGHTS pg. 13

The Lions help the community during disasters with immediate needs such as food, water and clothing. They also provide grants for humanitarian projects and have a Leo program for youth to give them an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. If you want to learn more about the Lions Club, or find a local chapter near you, visit www.lionsclubs. org. Agriculture program turns barnyard waste into manure giveaway Mission CISD’s Agriculture Program is kicking off a community-wide, greenthumb initiative: free manure giveaways on the last Thursday of every month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., while supplies last. The nutrient-rich manure is ideal for gardens, lawns, and flower beds. Community members are encouraged to bring their own containers, buckets, or trailers for easy pick-up. “We’re literally turning barnyard waste into garden gold,” said Jorge Flores, Mission CISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director. “It’s a win-win—our student agricultural program reduces waste, and local families get a cost-free boost for healthier soil and bigger blooms.” The manure is ideal for outdoor and garden use. Availability is firstcome, first-served. The Jose Carrera Agriculture Facility is located at 1207 W. Griffin Parkway in Mission. Jose Correra Agriculture Facility. (Courtesy Photo)

SPECIAL! 7 Day Plus Harlingen Community Theatre presents Aladdin Jr. Harlingen Community Theatre (HCT) is where Valley stars shine. After celebrating 50 years of highlighting Valley talent last season, they will continue to showcase the talent the Valley has to offer with this season shows. They started the season last month with Murder on the Orient Express. Their next show, Disney’s Aladdin Jr., is set to entertain audiences November 14 through 16. The shows will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults. The production highlights their summer youth intensive cast live on the stage. This is a show they created during a month-long theatre workshop in June. On February 27, 28 and March 1, and 6-8, the theatre will present Shrek the Musical. Their April show is slated to be Little Women on April 23-26, and in July they will present Seussical. Dates and showtimes can be found online, on their Facebook page, and in their ads in the Winter Texan Times. They do have season passes available for adults. Call for pricing. Even though tickets can be purchased at the door, if still available, I advise you to purchase ahead of time. We weren’t prepared for a show we went to see and had to wait to see if they had seats available for us – the three of us didn’t get to sit together, but we still enjoyed the show. We sat in the very front and were able to see the orchestra below deck. You can find out more about their shows, and their casting calls, by visiting their website at https://hctvalleystars.org/. Harlingen Community Theatre is located at 1209 Fair Park Blvd. next to the Lon C. Hill Destination Park, just past the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium. The venue has seating for 270 patrons, with two extra slots for patrons in a wheelchair. They also have designated handicapped seating. Performances are open seating – but there isn’t a bad seat in the house. They are a non-profit community theatre company. They produce four to five Broadway quality musicals or plays per year. The cast members are all local talent from the RGV. They hold auditions for each show and the cast includes children, teens, and adults. There are also opportunities for volunteers to work behind the scenes. McAllen is alive with music and arts The City of McAllen launched its Fall for the Arts celebration last month, marking the start of National Arts and Humanities Month with an event that highlighted the power of the arts to inspire, connect, and trans-form communities. Irma Chapa, Director of the Office of Communications for the City of McAllen welcomed attendees and media then made mention of the vast programs and lineups this season, from Fiesta de Palmas to Symphony in the Park at Sunset Live and the upcoming Broadway Series. The event featured live music, seasonal treats, and remarks from community leaders including Commission-er Tony Aguirre, City Manager Isaac Tawil, State Representative Terry Canales, Dr. Diane Milliken Garza of the Texas Commission on the Arts, David Lobel of the Valley Symphony Orchestra, and Yajaira Flores, McAllen’s Director of Convention & Performing Arts Facilities. State Representative Terry Canales reminded the audience of the deeper value of investing in the arts. “People want to go where there’s a true quality of life. And it is imperative that the stage you’re standing on isn’t just your destination, but a platform to raise awareness for the arts. There is nothing more important to the soul of a community than the arts,” said Canales. The event highlighted upcoming performances and programs, including the Valley Symphony Orchestra schedule and the live outdoor concerts series. Sunset Live Outdoor Concert Series are free monthly concerts in October, November, and December at Oval Park, connecting audiences with local and regional artists. The series offers free, family-friendly concerts that connect the community to live music in an open-air setting. Watch our calendars and stories to learn about the events happening in McAllen and other cities throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Yes, you are right, the Welcome Back edition was last week and somehow, I missed the deadline. So, this is another welcome which you well deserve. Winter Texans are like the frosting on a cake to the Rio Grande Valley. You add so much to our culture which as you well know is highly influenced by our proximity to Mexico. And many of you share your time and talents with us by volunteering to help in your adopted community or you volunteer at hospitals and in our schools. In fact, you are an inspiration to us and especially to me. After reading about all that you do to help our communities, I was inspired to follow your example of giving back. Since I am a retired elementary school teacher who has a basic knowledge of Spanish it was a natural choice for me to volunteer as a reading tutor in one of our public schools. I feel that I am of real help to those children. Not only do they receive extra attention, which they greatly need, but their reading skills have improved. This is a one-onone experience and takes just one hour of my time each week. The experience has been so rewarding that I am hoping that I will be accepted to volunteer at another school or at the hospital. The fact that I can speak and read basic Spanish has helped me greatly. I imagine that those of you who have been coming to the Valley for several years have picked up some Spanish. First, you surely must have learned how to say yes or no in Spanish. And after that, probably the word for more which is mas. I know of at least one park where Spanish classes are offered for those who wish to learn another language. I am sure that there are other parks who offer these classes, and why not? The world is truly a small place after all. Even our public schools have realized that we need to learn more than one language. Not too many years ago, children were punished if they spoke Spanish on the playground. Now things have changed. Classes are offered where the student is allowed to choose a second language and can choose a pen pal who will correspond with them in their native language. Just a little knowledge of another language will open up a whole new world in your travels. As we think of travels it is time to look at what is planned for the future. King Ranch Hand Breakfast is always the Saturday before Thanksgiving, For the rest of this year, plans are for the San Antonio Boat Parade and Hill Country Christmas as well as a Mexico Christmas tour, and the ever-popular trip to Monterrey. I am still waiting on some of the contracts before I can give a final quote. Stay tuned for more details on those trips and to see what else is coming. e . a - g a e - n g - a - t n r s e y - - s g - LIGHTS From pg. 6 alerts birds to its presence With your help, we can dramatically reduce the hazards posed by light pollution and bird collisions in cities nationwide and allow birds to resume their typical migratory behaviors.
