Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 39, No. 5 © 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, November 26, 2025 Perhaps one of the more interesting museums in the Rio Grande Valley – and mind you, many of the museums in the Valley have a lot of history and are interesting as well – is the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg. Part of the museum is the 1910 jail. The old jail was designed in a Spanish Mission Revival style in 1909-1910. I hope you have a pleasant one with your family and friends. As we all know, especially here in Texas, our friends become family, especially during the holidays. For us, our family is spread in many directions, so it’s often that we celebrate Thanksgiving with our close friends. We truly are truly thankful for them, and our families, when we can get together. The holidays just make those moments all the merrier. When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of the past and getting together with my grandparents on the farm. Starting in January of each year, the group performs live for audiences at various RV parks in the Rio Grande Valley. The group is always looking for men who enjoy singing and invite you to join them at the weekly practice sessions. All levels are welcome. Practice sessions are held each Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bentsen Grove Resort (1645 S. Bentsen Rd.) in Mission. The group sings from music, so no memorization is required. SOUTH POLE From pg. 1 with spectacular lights, festive entertainment, and exciting new attractions for 2025. The festival’s signature Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday will once again mark the start of the holiday season in McAllen, officially transforming the city into the South Pole of Texas. Towering over Oval Park, McAllen’s digital Christmas tree shines brighter than ever – over 100 feet of music, motion, and mesmerizing color. Gather with family and friends as the lights pulse in perfect harmony, creating a one-of-a-kind holiday show that defines the spirit of the South Pole Illuminated Festival. During a recent press event, Mayor Javier Villalobos expressed his excitement for the festival’s return. “This is one of the largest and most anticipated events we host all year, and it just keeps getting bigger and better,” said Mayor Villalobos. “The weather in South Texas is perfect for enjoying the holidays outdoors, clear nights and bright lights set the best backdrop to bring Santa from the North Pole to our very own South Pole!” City Manager Isaac “Ike” J. Tawil recognized the teamwork behind the event and the sense of community it brings. “The South Pole Illuminated Festival and McAllen Holiday Parade have become some of McAllen’s brightest symbols of unity and imagination,” said Tawil. “This event transforms our Convention Center District into a winter wonderland that rivals any in the nation, with millions of lights, world-class attractions, and experiences that give people a true sense of place and belonging.” This year’s festival highlights include the New “Christmas Across nearby. The jail’s walls were made of solid brick, its floors were concrete, and the roof was made of clay tiles on wooden structures. Inside, the jailer’s office and living quarters were located on the ground floor. The prisoner’s cell rooms were located on the second floor, along with the hanging room in the tower. The second floor probably had one or more steel block units. During the cold winters, wood-burning stoves were used to heat the jail and keep the prisoners warm. Their water source was usually a windmill and wooden water tank that stood behind the jail. According to records, the hanging apparatus was used only once. The condemned Abram Ortiz was convicted of rape and murder and executed in 1913. No other hangings are on record. Local folklore rumors Ortiz’ ghost haunts the jail by clanking his shackles. Years later, other reports by volunteer firemen bunking on the second-floor claim “hearing things” throughout the night. The jail was replaced in 1922 and the 1910 jail served as a community center. In the 30’s it was turned into the fire station (with a brick garage added) and city hall. A new city hall and fire station were built in the mid-1960’s, leaving the old jail vacant and deteriorating. This is when it was chosen as the home for the Hidalgo County Historical Museum, later becoming the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH). The jail was refurbished, the window bars were reconstructed, the roofs repaired, and air conditioning installed. My go to was always my grandfather’s wonderful citrus salad. I usually try to have a citrus salad for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I fix my salad just a little different nowadays and I take shortcuts in sectioning the citrus as well. My grandfather would spend all morning working on his – peeling the fruit and then getting the membrane off the citrus. Today, I cut the tops and bottoms off the citrus, round the sides, and then use a small sharp knife to pull out the citrus. I try to waste as little of the fruit as possible. My Grandfather would get some grapefruit and oranges to do his salad with – most of them coming from their own back yard. Me, I like to get my citrus from a local citrus grower/shop in the Valley whenever possible. I try to use several types of grapefruit, a couple of oranges, and even include some mandarins and tangerines. It all depends on the flavor profile I am wanting and what’s available – I love to use Marrs and Cara Cara Oranges when I can. I then throw in some cherries – with the juice – and if I want some crisp I will throw in some sliced apples and grapes. Mix it together and have a really nice refreshing citrus salad for dessert, as a side, or even as a great breakfast treat. This is something I have to have at least during one of the holiday meals. It’s very refreshing after it has been in the fridge overnight. So, what is a tradition you like to keep during the holidays? Is there a specific item that must be at your dinner table for Thanksgiving? 7 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com NOVEMBER 26, 2025 Angel Trees make Christmas wishes come true The Salvation Army of McAllen is excited to kick off its annual Angel Tree program, with a heartfelt invitation to the community to Give with Joy this holiday season. Through this cherished tradition, children in need will receive toys, clothing, and the joy of knowing someone cares. Thanks to the generosity of local donors, more than 2,800 children will wake up to gifts under the tree this Christmas—gifts that represent hope, dignity, and love. “The Salvation Army Angel Tree program provides toys and clothing to children and families who might be struggling to afford Christmas gifts this year,” said Major Jan Zuniga of The Salvation Army of McAllen. “Each angel adopted by an individual, family, or community business, is a child whose holiday will be brighter because someone chose to Give with Joy.” The Salvation Army Angel Trees can be found at local malls and other businesses during the holiday season. Individuals and businesses in the community can adopt “angels,” represented by paper angels on trees. Each angel symbolizes a child who might not receive a gift at Christmas without this program. Angels will be available for adoption from now through December 12, with gift distribution to area families taking place on December 16-18. If you cannot shop in person this year, you can still participate in the Angel Tree program through Walmart’s “Registry for Good” program. Visit https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/walmart-angel-tree/ and search for The Salvation Army of McAllen to order items that benefit local families. Walmart will deliver these gifts directly to The Salvation Army. In McAllen, you can adopt an angel at La Plaza Mall, Walmart, or The Salvation Army McAllen or call (956) 682-1468. Olivia Flores, an eighth grader at Austin Middle School in San Juan, is one of those high achievers as a cadet member of Girl Scout Troop 3000. She has been in Girl Scouts for the past nine years and during that time earned all the scout badges offered. The lower half of the back of her vest contains all of the badges of a remarkable career in scouting. The Alamo resident became a Girl Scout after her mother, Natalie, formed the Great South Texas troop nine years ago when Olivia was a student at Doedyns Elementary School in San See CADET pg. 16 Olivia Flores, of Alamo, has earned all the badges offered in Girl Scouts, which she has on the back of her vest. We always enjoy your time with us, and our time with you, and we sure are going to miss it while you are gone. We know you are coming to the Valley for the community, the weather, lower prices, and more. We also know you are coming because of the culture and the warm welcomes you receive. But it is also your warmness that makes us love seeing you each year. Speaking of that warmness, you do so much for the communities you live in – whether it is for See THANK YOU pg. 18 Thank you for coming, safe travels, see you next season 2025 Winter Texan Fiesta. Photo by William Brunson By Herb Moering Hundreds of Winter Texans turned out Friday under picture perfect weather for the 49th annual Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso. The event to say “thanks” to all those who come to shop, eat, purchase medicines and have dental work done in Progreso began with a brief welcome in the Bridge Authority Building from Samuel Robert Sparks Jr., the private bridge co-owner, to various area government officials and spouses and special friends. See PROGRESO pg. 20 Tourists enjoy refreshments and entertainment in Progreso Members of both delegations and honored guests took a moment out to exchange greetings and have some photos taken to commemorate the 49th Annual Tourist Day 2025. Photo by Herb Moering This season has, once again, been a blast. We have a lot of fun when we are out and about with you, sharing your news, and hearing your stories. I had the opportunity to hear many stories this year. What you see in the paper is sometimes just a bit of what is shared. I keep learning how eager you are to help others, to be there for your friends, and to teach others how to do the same. It’s amazing to see the strength you have and watch you use your experiences to help the community you live in through service, teaching, and more. We always enjoy sharing the stories of community service you do for your park, and for organizations, schools, and churches in your community. We get to see how thankful and how full of gratitude everyone is for your service – whether it be through volunteer work, making something, donating food, or any of the other multitude of ways you find to fulfill the need. But the big box stores aren’t the only place to find a good bargain. Small Business Saturday, the day after Black Friday, offers shoppers an opportunity to find great quality items at a competitive price and invest in their community. Small Business Saturday has become a great way to kick off the holiday season. What began 15 years ago as a way to promote small businesses recovering from the Great Recession, has blossomed into one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Last year, shoppers spent roughly $22 billion at their local businesses. The holiday season is a time to celebrate and express gratitude. On Small Business Saturday and every day of the year, shopping small plays a big role in supporting our communities. In Texas, small businesses are the beating heart of our economy, accounting for more than 99 percent of businesses in the state and employing 5.1 million working Texans, according to the Small Business Administration. When you stop in at your favorite coffee shop, locally owned boutique, or family-run hardware store, your dollars go further. Nearly 68 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays within the community where it’s spent and creates another 50 cents in local business activity. This holiday season don’t forget to shop small. Our local businesses keep our communities strong and our economy growing. When Main Street prospers, we all prosper.
