The Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum is a one-of-a-kind museum in the Rio Grande Valley. The museum houses three historical buildings on its ground. When you visit the museum, you will also be able to look at the original home of Lon C. Hill, Harlingen’s town founder; the Paso Real Stagecoach Inn; and Harlingen’s first hospital. It was only for a two-hour slot, and it was in the morning, while it was still slow, but I was so thankful to learn about The Giving Machine, San Antonio, and the organization the machine is supporting in the area. Next week we will be sharing the information about The Giving Machine that will be opening right here in the Valley, at the McAllen Food Park. I am excited to see what organizations the machine will have items for. In the San Antonio machine, you can donate as little as $1 for seven meals for the San Antonio Food Bank, $35 for diapers for the local homeless shelter, or even $115 for a goat for a worldwide service organization. Guests enjoyed live music, free buñuelos and candy canes, and more, as they anticipated the first official lighting of the cottages. The event was emceed by Brock Hughston, who also plays keyboard and sings vocals with the band. Other members include Frank Morris on drums and Darak Weaver on guitar. Their holiday music set, which included favorites like You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch and Jingle Bell Rock, had the crowd feeling festive. Guests were also excited about the many door prizes that were given away during the event. Many local businesses donate these prizes each year. Monday night was an especially great bunch of prizes, featuring gift cards to local restaurants like Vermillion and Bubba’s 33, vouchers to OrangeTheory Fitness and MPower Fitness, gift certificates to Polish’d Nail Salon and Aloha Veterinary Clinic, and even a plane ride in a genuine World War II aircraft. For those who may not know, the Holiday Village at Dean Porter Park in Brownsville is a collection of cottages, each one measuring about 10’ wide, 8’ deep and over 11’ tall, which are adorned inside and out with the most whimsical and adorable holiday trimmings. The Village is set up in the park every November, free and open to the public, and runs from the Monday before Thanksgiving through the first of the year. This family-friendly attraction is funded by grants and sponsors and organized entirely by volunteers. “Our small committee of volunteers is truly special, each one bringing unique talents and inspiration to our group. We’re all so excited to bring this outstanding event to our community year after year,” said Laurie Ray, Holiday Village Chair. This year’s sponsors include Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau, H-E-B Helping Here, Brownsville Public Utilities Board, McNair & Co., the Serafy Family Foundation, and IDEA Public Schools. Also returning to the park this year is Fritter, the Holiday Village elf. From the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, join in the fun of finding Fritter and enter to win daily and weekly prizes from the Children’s Museum of Brownsville. Patrons can also enjoy delicious treats from a variety of food vendors, as well as performances by many local dance groups, choirs, school groups and more, throughout the nearly six-week long event. Admission is free all day every day, and the cottages are lit at 6 p.m. each evening. Santa Claus will be in the gazebo and available for free pictures (bring your own camera) every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night through December 21st. HARLINGEN From pg. 1 e - y o e g - d - f h s . g - , s - B c e A s e - n o e s , y l e - e . d r , r t - - y lice Squadron and Brig of the Harlingen Air Force Base. This building houses a permanent collection of Harlingen and Texas historical objects and photos. The main museum building features rotating arts and cultural exhibits. A bit of history – Lon C. Hill was a true pioneer and one of the most forceful characters according to some who knew him. He was never known to dodge a fight – whether it was the six-shooter route, a legal courtroom battle, or the type of political battle that was common to the Rio Grande country of Texas over a hundred years ago. In the early days, the town was called Six-Shooter Junction. This was due to the fact that its first Anglo-Saxon population consisted mostly of Texas Rangers, Border Patrolmen, and Hill. He showed those who questioned his thinking, that the Valley would be a prosperous area, that the river could be tamed, and there would be gardens. He built the region’s original irrigation canals that are gravity-fed. This set the stage for farming that eventually became the mainstay for the area economy. All of this history, and more, can be found on the City of Harlingen’s website at https://harlingentx.gov/ community/history.php. The museum chronicles this history with artifacts from the period, and of course, Hill’s home. When I visited a while back, they had an exhibit that featured antiques from the days of yore and the days of farming with less technology than we have today. They were having a little contest to see who could name each ‘artifact.’ I can tell you, with a farming background and from watching many old movies, I could name nearly every piece they had on display. nate to, so it will be nice to see who gets sponsored through the machine this year. This machine is like a vending machine, but you get to give something to someone in need. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the organization you choose to support. The machines are placed around the world for visitors to give a little bit to their communities. It was fun to see the families that came up to the machine. The parents explained what each card was, reading off the cards, talking about the organization the donation would be going to. One mother let each of her three kids pick something from the machine. She lifted the two younger kids up so they could make their selections on the keypad. Then we had the chance to take pictures of the family, holding cards that represented what they donated, with smiles on their faces. It was a delight seeing them doing this together. We were there to provide answers to questions, direct them on how to use the machine if needed. But we gave no directions in who they should choose to give to. One lady, a veteran, chose to give a Troop Care Package to a military organization, while another, a Rotary Club member, chose to give back to her organization. While we celebrate the holidays, there are many of us that can’t give much, but I will ask you to remember those around you. You don’t have to give money, a present, or even a meal if you can’t – but at least say hello, greet someone with a smile, ask someone how they are doing. As a good friend of ours always says, share a smile, it doesn’t cost anything, and it spreads. RAMBLINGS From pg. 1 See HARLINGEN pg. 20

7 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com DECEMBER 3, 2025 Calvary Baptist Church presents Behold, A Savior! Celebrate the true spirit of Christmas. Calvary Baptist Church 1600 Harvey St. in McAllen will present the Christmas cantata, “Behold, A Savior!” featuring a 30-member choir with piano and orchestra under the direction of Dr. Bill O’Neil. The concerts will be on Friday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 13 at 3:30 p.m. Dr. O’Neil is in his third year as Calvary Choir director and brings decades of musical experience to the choir. He has been on faculty at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley/UT Pan American as professor of clarinet since 1992. He is currently co-principal clarinetist with the Valley Symphony Orchestra. Bill grew up in Winnipeg and is delighted to live in the RGV. Last year he said it was fun to learn new music and nothing’s better than celebrating the birth of our Lord. Last year they performed How Should a King Come, and the year before they learned the history of the Christmas Carols they sang. “It’s rewarding to see how week by week, we come together to form the music doing fun things and bringing it all together to form this cantata,” he said. Dr. Daniel Cather will accompany on piano, as he has done for the past 11 years of service as a Worship Leader at Calvary Baptist Church. He has been Chair of the Music Department at South Texas College and assistant professor of music since 2008. Several other professional musicians will complete the orchestra at the presentations. The Calvary Choir has been an integral part of worship in the church for over sixty years. Today’s choir continues that tradition with heartfelt love for God and singing to His glory. The choir sings every Sunday, directed by Bill O’Neil and accompanied by Dan Cather at the 9:30 a.m. service. Some of the performers have been with the choir or orchestra for many years. A few of them have been with the group for over 15 years. The concerts are free, and the public is cordially invited to attend. Join them for this highly anticipated annual event and let your heart be lifted and filled with joy at the coming of Jesus, the Messiah.
