Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 39, No. 7 © 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, December 10, 2025 Our Rio Grande Valley museums supply arts, history and culture to their visitors throughout the year. But during the Christmas season, they also share creativity and bright lights. Several museums have Christmas tree exhibits. They get the community to bring and decorate a tree, usually to a certain theme. You can be sure to see lots of colors and lights as organizations pick a theme that represents them, the city, or their heritage. Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum have their Christmas Tree Extravaganza on display through December 31. We’ve had some welcoming cooler weather lately. It’s been nice having it feel like winter finally – and just before Christmas. I prefer it to be with no wind and clear skies, but I’ll take some days of lower temps, especially during the holiday season. It took a while this year for the holiday spirit to really set in. With it being so warm, it was hard to feel like the season was here. It was nice having the opportunities to give to remind us about the season, and what is important during this time of year. We have so many opportunities to give a helping hand here in the Valley, and everywhere else too. Sometimes it doesn’t take a lot. Sometimes it is just a helping hand, a can of food, or just being there. The Valley has a lot of programs See MUSEUMS pg. 4 Light the World this holiday season by visiting The Giving Machine at McAllen Food Park. (Photo by Carina A. Many people are excited for the Giving Machines to finally come down to McAllen. “During the Christmas season many of us have a desire to serve our community more intentionally, just like the Savior did. One of the many ways we can do this is through the Giving Machines – the vending machine that helps you give locally and internationally to those in need,” said Emily Holbrook. Lara Hess is excited for her children to experience the Giving Machine this year since they have never lived close to one. She hopes it will help her children donate to a cause that is important to them. This year, Giving Machines will appear in more than 131 cities worldwide (11 locations just in Texas), providing a fun, unique, and memorable way to do an instant act of kindness for someone in need. The Giving Machine is part of the annual Light the World initiative, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Church covers all operational expenses, enabling participating nonprofit organizations to receive one hundred percent of every donation. The nonprofits featured in the McAllen Giving Machines include Capable Kids; CASA for Children; Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc.; Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Rio Grande Valley; South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association; Church World Service; and Water for Good. Rebecca Gearheart, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Foundation in the Rio Grande Valley, said “When you give, you’re not just donating – you’re helping a child feel joy, strength, and possibility. Every dollar truly makes magic happen!” With donated funds, nonprofits participating in the Giving Machine have delivered hundreds of thousands of items worldwide. Other locations throughout the world have different organizations or items you can donate. For instance, you can donate a goat, a chicken, eye exams, toys, education, and more. If you can’t make it to the McAllen location, or another location near you if you aren’t in the Valley (or don’t want to make the drive), you can visit the website and donate online directly to a charitable cause of your choice. Visit Instagram.com/TexasGivingMachine and Facebook.com/TexasGivingMachine for a list of events happening at McAllen Giving Machines at the McAllen Food Park. There will be a special celebration on opening day. To learn more about this global Initiative, visit GivingMachine.org. The Giving Machine first appeared in 2017, and more than $44 million has been contributed. CHANUKAH From pg. 2 a tyrannical monarch, the victorious Jewish community could find very little pure olive oil to light the Menorah, only enough for one day. However, the oil lasted for eight days, long enough to purify more oil! Jewish people light a candle on each of the eight evenings in remembrance of God’s provision. The eight cups that hold the Hanukkah candles are arranged in a row, one for each night of the holiday. Every menorah has one additional cup, a ninth cup, which is located in the center or to one side and is usually slightly elevated. The ninth candle is called “the shammash,” or, “one who serves.” Jewish tradition says the purpose of the shammash is that “Judaism gives light to the world.” Come celebrate the holiday tradition in McAllen.

Our food banks are particularly needing more help at this time of year. While there are programs for kids and families, there are some cities that have programs to give to the seniors, or grandparents, in their communities as well. It’s nice to see that the communities try to make sure they are helping all of those that might need some extra cheer this season. I invite you to find a charity, an organization, or a cause that resonates with you. One that means something to you. I tend to gravitate towards Ronald McDonald Charities and the American Cancer Society, because they played an important role in family members’ lives. I also lean to fire and police department causes since my brother, grandfather, uncle, and other family members have or currently serve in their own communities. While working at Hobby Lobby several years ago, I learned of an organization in San Antonio called Threads of Love. Ladies would come into the store to purchase fabric to make clothing items. One lady was overjoyed when her son gave her a gift of money to use for her charity. They dedicate their time making items for premature babies – warming socks, clothing, blankets, and even items for in case they pass. They try to take on some of that burden of the families that are already going through so much during a difficult time. They even repurpose wedding gowns for burial use. It’s heartwarming to see the needs of families being fulfilled in so many ways, through so many organizations. RAMBLINGS From pg. 1 If you can’t find an organization or charity to support, find a neighbor that might need an extra pick me up, text an old friend, make some cookies for someone on your street, say hello when you walk by someone, or just smile. The IMAS Guild invites community members to visit this year’s Christmas Tree Forest. This year’s theme is “Christmas in a Science Lab,” asking participants to put a creative spin on the season, to combine the magic of the holidays with the wonder of science. It is a long-standing tradition for all ornaments to be hand-made. The exhibit shows the creativity and ingenuity of the community from preschoolers through adult groups. The Christmas Tree Forest will be on display through January 4. The hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. IMAS is located at 1900 W. DECEMBER 10, 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com 6 WINTER TEXAN TIMES STHS and Prominence Health to educate older adults on preventing falls For the final installment of its monthly “Falling Out of Danger” educational series, the STHS McAllen Trauma Department and STHS McAllen Rehabilitation Services Department will highlight ways to strengthen balance and mobility through a strong mind-body connection. Each year, about 37 million falls are reported among the elderly in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), resulting in millions of injuries and tens of thousands of deaths, making falls a principal cause of injury and death for Americans aged 65 and older. “The risk of falling — and fall-related problems — increases with age due to a decline in vision and hearing, changes in muscle mass and reflexes that might not be as sharp as they once were,” says Faith Arredondo, DPT, Acute Therapy Manager, South Texas Health System McAllen. ”Unfortunately, even a simple accident like tripping on a loose rug or slipping on a slick floor can change an older adult’s life. A broken bone, which thousands of elderly Americans experience each year, can be the start of more serious health problems and lead to long-term disability.” The good news: Improving cognitive abilities, mindfulness and emotional well-being can reduce an individual’s fall risk, with studies showing practices like yoga, Tai Chi and dancebased exercise programs help strengthen balance and mobility. “The mind-body connection is essential for fall prevention because our mental and physical states are linked,” says Arredondo. “A stronger mind is better at multitasking and reacting to challenges, which is critical for preventing falls. Meanwhile, being more present and aware of your body and your surroundings helps you avoid hazards and maintain balance.” When it comes to fall prevention, health experts say a combined approach of physical and mental training has greater protective effects, with activities that involved both physical and cognitive components like Tai Chi particularly effective. To help older adults in the Rio Grande Valley reduce their risk of falls through an improved mind-body connection, the STHS McAllen Trauma Department and STHS McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center will partner with Prominence Health to host the fourth and final installment of their monthly “Falling Out of Danger: Fall Prevention Education Series” events on Wednesday, December 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Titled “Mind-Body Techniques – Tai Chi,” the session will take place at STHS McAllen, in the facility’s firstfloor GME Classroom. It will feature STHS McAllen Rehabilitation Services Department & STHS McAllen Trauma Department staff members highlighting how our thoughts and emotions directly impact physical health and vice versa. “Understanding the role our minds play in the avoidance of falls is an important part of protecting our health,” says Arredondo. “By managing stress, improving emotional regulation, increasing self-awareness and building resilience, we can reduce our risk of falls and improve our overall health and quality of life regardless of age.” In addition, the event will include level-of-care assessments, including gait checks and blood pressure screenings, to help determine the best care for you or your loved ones, as well as an expo to highlight senior-related resources provided by STHS, Prominence Health and local community organizations. There’s no need to pre-register for the event, which is free to attend. For complete details, visit the STHS Facebook Events page. 7 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com DECEMBER 10, 2025 PCT presents “A Texas Christmas Carol” in Spanish with a RGV twist The Pharr Community Theater (PCT) is pleased to announce its holiday production of the year: a vibrant Spanish-language adaptation of Charles Dickens’s “A Tejano Christmas Carol,” reimagined especially for the Rio Grande Valley. In this regional and contemporary version, the classic protagonist is transformed into Ezequiel Codos, played by Pharr’s Pedro Garcia, a greedy lawyer and water broker whose ambition to sell large portions of Rio Grande water jeopardizes the community’s environmental and social future. The story takes a deeply local turn by introducing the spirits who visit Codos. • The Ghost of Christmas Past: La Rielera, played by Harlingen’s Mireya Smith, inspired by the Soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution, a symbol of struggle, memory, and sacrifice. • The Ghost of Christmas Present: Selena, portrayed by Erika Garza from La Joya, the iconic Tejano singer, embodies cultural pride, joy, and community unity. • And the Ghost of Tomorrow, portrayed by Cecilio Muñoz of Pharr, remains a shadowy figure, illustrating the devastating consequences of water abuse in the Valley. Performance dates are December 10 to 19. At the Pharr Community Theater, 213 W. Newcombe Ave. December 10 to 14 (Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.). There will also be showings at the DRC Center, 850 W. Dicker Rd., Pharr, on December 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. Children and Adults tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advance tickets are available at www.pharrcommunitytheater.com or at the box office on the day of the performance, subject to availability. Directed by Pedro Garcia, this adaptation blends tradition, border history, and Tejano culture, accompanied by music, costumes, sound effects, and a cast of nearly 20 local adults and children, many from PCT’s theater programs. “We wanted this version to speak directly to our community,” Garcia stated. “The presence of La Rielera and Selena connects the play to our roots and our identity. And by setting the story against the backdrop of the Rio Grande, we invite reflection on the future we share.” For more details, you can text (956) 655-9308 or (956) 588-7587. There will also be a toy drive in collaboration with Driscoll and Edinburg Health Systems. PCT asks you to donate a new toy during any of the presentations and bring joy to a young patient this Christmas. The drop off box will be inside the PCT lobby.
