Because of the growing interest Jim Davis, track chairman at Alamo Palms RV and MH Park, has been pursuing the idea of a formal association format that would open up events all over for anyone interested in racing, rather than limiting races to only those who live in their park. The association could set standard racing rules for all tracks in the reINDEX Events Calendar p 4 Reunions p 4 Parks Calendar p 8 WintertainersTM p 9 On The Road p 13 Business Guide p 16 Classifieds p 17 Coupon Index p 18 Taste of the Valley p 19 Rina’s Ramblings See RAMBLINGS pg. 5 You cannot miss Port Isabel. Especially if you are going to South Padre Island. Port Isabel is a welcoming small town with little shops, a museum, piers, and a beautiful lighthouse. Lots of history sits in the little square just before the Queen Isabella Causeway. Port Isabel was known as Point Isabel because of the natural bluff formation that jutted out into the Laguna Madre. In 1928, Point Isabel was incorporated as a town, and its name was changed to Port Isabel because of the newly proposed port being planned. See PORT ISABEL pg. 5 Port Isabel has many stories to tell Alamo Palms holds RC Swap Meet I hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Christmas. I also hope that whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year, that you are blessed and happy. This is the time of year that memories are made, that we fill our moments with good times, and usually our favorite people. With it being a quiet Christmas for us – just me, Dan, and our son – we were blessed to be invited to a friend’s home to spend Christmas eve with their family, and other friends/families from church – a total of 35 people. This family has become like family to us – and when we dig through ancestry, we’re like third cousins or something like that. It was a beautiful evening with friends, food, desserts, and a Christmas program that shared the story of Jesus and some holiday hymns. See RC SWAP pg. 3 Port Isabel Historical Museum. Many have special entertainment lined up with dinner and other events throughout the night. Many of these parks sell out of tickets weeks before New Year’s Eve. So, if you didn’t get a ticket in time and are still looking for things to do, there might be a few places you can go to still have some fun. South Padre Island puts on a good fireworks show. New Year’s Eve is just a little different, with a bigger show to celebrate the ringing of a new year. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. over Laguna Madre Bay. There are celebrations throughout the island at several locations too. The big show will be held in the Entertainment District at 211 W. Whiting St. Many restaurants will be having special dinners and have great viewing spots from their outdoor areas. The City of Pharr will have their annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. The city is inviting residents to ring in the new year with live music by the Spazmatics, a firework display, a drone and light show, a vendor market, and more. The free event begins at 8 p.m. in downtown Pharr, 118 S. Cage Blvd. While there might be a few more cities offering some special fireworks displays for New Year’s Eve, I am sure your favorite hangouts will also have some special New Year’s Eve celebrations planned too. While not exactly New Year’s Eve related, many cities still have their Christmas lights out for visitors to enjoy. Hidalgo Festival of Lights will also have their events through January 4. Find out more information on their website at https://www.hidalgofestivaloflights.com/. The Leo Pena Placita Park is all lit up at Bus. 83 and Conway in Mission. Enjoy lights, décor, and displays throughout the park. City of McAllen will have their digital tree and oval park lit up at the McAllen Convention Center. Most of the Valley cities will still have their lights on in their main parks into the beginning of January. I invite you to drive around and see the lights, not only in your neighborhood, but your city as well. Always remember to play it safe. Follow city guidelines about fireworks. Take care of your pets. Most importantly, have a great and safe New Year!! Courtesy of SPI CVB

He said that would hopefully allow RC racers to go to various tracks and compete just about any day of the week if they chose. Davis became chairman of the Alamo Palms Chargers Club a year ago. He has plans for a Facebook page, calling it 55 Plus RGV RC Racing. He sees it as a vehicle for track chairmen to provide information about when open race meets are scheduled, the results of races and any special events that are to be held. One of those big events was a recent RC swap meet at Alamo Palms Park, which drew about 20 vendors, mostly Winter Texans, from the mid-Valley. It was a place to discuss racing and to vote for the best car on display. The Harley Davidson pickup truck of John Keoni Aegerter was the winner and good for two restaurant gift cards. The drawing for a Losi sprint car went to Gerry Lewis. Among the vendors was Rod Fitzgerald from Alamo Palms, who had a different twist to RC cars, showing vehicles known as “rock crawlers.” Operators have their cars in what amounts to an obstacle course of rocks, sand, mud etc. to negotiate. He said he has been at “bashing club” his way around a course for the past five years. John Wallace, who now lives in San Antonio, came to the swap meet offering a variety of racing parts. Wallace, who used to live at Ranchero Village in Weslaco, said he had spent 40 years in the RC racing sport. Lloyd Jerauld, who likes NASCAR, Indy racers and RC cars, said he had helped build a track where he lives at Texas Trails RV Park in Pharr. But he has come to Alamo to race over the past three years. He had been a resident at Ranchero Village, which had 10 different classes of RC racing. He was originally from New York State but then came to the Valley some 20 years ago as a full-time resident so he and his wife could ride their horses year-round. Davis was pleased with the turnout, with about 125 people coming during the afternoon. He got started in RC racing 20 years ago, while traveling much of the country as part of a military family and then as a full-time RVer. He settled in the area as a coming home with his wife who is from the Valley. Davis said they had a big summer program involving major track renovations. The dirt oval had a total resurfacing for the various classes. Although there are about 20 different classes for racing, Alamo Palms only runs 12 in the outdoor program, which began on December 2. While work went on at the main track this past summer, the club had mini car racing on a smaller indoor track that worked out well in one of the park’s buildings. Any money raised by the club goes directly back into the program, Davis said. Davis emphasized they try to make it easy for beginners to get into RC racing. While some race cars can range as high as $1,500 to $2,000, there are competitive cars right out of the box that are priced in the $200 to $300 range. The skill of the driver is what determines race winners. It’s interesting to watch the cars run on the track, sliding through the turns just like the big cars driven on short tracks. Davis invites racing fans to come and see the action on any Tuesday. Doors open at 4 p.m. and racing starts at 5:30 p.m. RC SWAP From pg. 1

(Photo by William Brunson) Whether you prefer nature and the outdoors, historical sites, parks, fishing, boating, or parasailing over the surf at South Padre Island, the Rio Grande Valley has it all. Visitors can enjoy all the Valley has to offer year-round due to the Valley’s mild winter weather. Over 100,000 Winter Texans stay for the winter season to enjoy our warm, subtropical climate with an average temperature of 65-70 degrees. Winter Texans are not the only ones who have discovered the Rio Grande Valley. Birding, butterfly, and nature enthusiasts from all parts of the country come to the Valley every year, attracted by the 545 species of birds and 330 butterfly species that are either native to the area or that migrate through the Valley each year. Because of its neo-tropical climate, the Rio Grande Valley is home to many tropical birds that can be seen nowhere else in the United States. It is also a major bird migration corridor with two major flyways converging here. The Rio Grande Valley is also a place full of history. From battle sites to the only lighthouse on the gulf shores, to museums with artifacts, to chapels, historic homes, and old stores. Every Valley city has a story to tell. Whether you are a Winter Texan, a family with young children, or just someone that enjoys the outdoors, history and culture, the Rio Grande Valley has something to offer everyone. Inside you will find beautiful maps that pinpoint featured locations throughout the Valley. We have broken up the area into eight regions, so whatever area you are visiting, you have a map to see what is close to you. It really shows me the many blessings I have in my life, and how blessed I am to have amazing friendships. I hope yours was as blessed as mine and that you found something to be thankful for as well. I recently saw a post on Facebook that was a follow up to the gentleman that was raising funds to buy turkeys for the Penitas Food Pantry. I was so happy to hear that with the support of his park, and the surrounding Martin Ranch properties, they were able to provide turkeys and meals for those that were in need not only for Thanksgiving, but also the two weeks leading up to Christmas. He, and that community, have been so blessed by the giving spirit of those in the community. He isn’t the only one I have seen posts from. There are so many that have given of themselves these past two months. Y’all are truly a blessing to the Valley and the communities you take in as part of your own. With the new year starting tomorrow, I hope that we all continue to be blessed by those we choose to be around, and by the deeds we choose to partake in. I give a huge thank you to all of you for being a part of our lives in some way or another, by reading our paper, by sending us news items, etc. We believe you are part of our family as well. We love our Winter Texan friends, and we love having you here. I hope you have a very safe and fun New Year’s Eve and look forward to what the new year brings for all of us. ~ Rina RAMBLINGS From pg. 1 Located in the historic Champion Building on Railroad Ave., the 1899 building was once a dry goods store and residence and later served as a post office and railroad depot. Joseph Champion was an Italian immigrant who settled in Texas in 1855. Charles Champion was born in 1870 in Old Point Isabel. He served as district clerk in Hidalgo County before purchasing the Hess General Store in Point Isabel in 1894. He renamed it The Champion Store and continued to operate the business. In 1899, Champion erected this two-story building and named it “The Key of the Gulf.” The first floor housed the general merchandise store, the US Customs House and the post office. Champion, a proponent of a deep-water port in Point Isabel, died in 1926 before its completion in 1933. He was buried next to wife in the Point Isabel Cemetery. The façade of the museum features a fish mural painted in 1906 by a local fisherman. The museum features artifacts from the 1554 shipwreck, has one of the largest collections of relics from the US Mexican War, and offers a timeline of Port Isabel’s development into a major fishing port including the history of the Texas International Fishing Tournament. The museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call for current hours of operation. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors (over 55), and $3 for students and children. For more information, visit www.portisabelhistory.com or call (956) 943-7602. Port Isabel Lighthouse To get a great view of the Laguna Madre, climb to the top of the Point (Port) Isabel Lighthouse which was constructed in 1852 to guide ships through the Brazos Santiago Pass and into the Laguna Madre. Opened as a State Park in 1952, it is the only lighthouse open to the public on the Texas Gulf coast. Also on the grounds of the Lighthouse is the Keeper’s Cottage Visitor Center. The Port Isabel Lighthouse is a Texas Historical Commission State Historic Site. In 2022, the Texas Historical Commission funded and coordinated the reproduction of a 3rd Order Fresnal Lens to be fitted into the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse. The lighthouse had a celebration in December of that year commemorating the first official lighting of the historic lighthouse in 117 years. The Lighthouse is open daily, weather permitting. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and News Year’s Day. Admission prices are adults $5, seniors $4, and students $3. For more information visit www.portisabellighthouse.com or call (956) 943-0735. While you are cruising around Port Isabel, take notice of the dolphin statues around town. These are much like the decorated turtles on SPI, butterflies in Mission, and the Boots in Mercedes. These began as an initiative with local artists to restore and beautify the city’s iconic dolphin statues and infuse additional artistic vibrancy in the city. Old statues were repaired and restored before creating additional sculptures. You’ll one as you drive into the city, one by the lighthouse, and another in front of the art gallery – just to name a few. And don’t forget to go out onto Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier – to fish, or just for a great view – and check out the Black Dragon Pirate Cruise – an attraction that features a two-hour cruise with water gun fights, sword battles, cannon firings, tales of pirates, and area history. Submission Details Quilts can be dropped off at the Mission Historical Museum until January 31, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed December 24, 25, 31). Participants are asked to include key information about the quilt, such as the maker’s name, the quilt’s age, how it was acquired, and any personal stories associated with it. Multiple quilt submissions are welcome. The Turning of the Quilts program will be featured during the Awards Ceremony of the 20th Annual Mission Quilt Show on February 6, 2026, at 2 p.m. This event provides a unique opportunity for the community to showcase their quilts and learn more about their history. For more information or to submit your quilt, please contact the Mission Historical Museum at (956) 580-8646. About the Mission Historical Museum The Mission Historical Museum is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, which first opened its doors in 2002, and serves the community of Mission and visitors to the area. Via donations, the Mission Historical Museum is able to offer free admission. The Museum maintains both permanent and temporary exhibits and presents a variety of events and programs for all ages. Our interpretation goal is to inspire the citizens of our community through the presentation of our exhibits. The museum is located at 900 Doherty Ave. in Mission.
