Valley Star AWARDS SHOW 15TH Annual Brought to you by Find show ticket outlets on Page 20 Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 39, No. 13 © 2026 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, January 21, 2026 By Herb Moering The love and vision that the late Brenda Keen had for pickleball has resulted in a new dimension for the popular sport at Trophy Gardens RV Resort with the addition of two new outdoor courts. The new courts were dedicated in memory of Brenda in a ceremony on January 13, which attracted a large number of players and other Winter Texans in the park. The sign of the “Brenda Keen Courts” was unveiled by the woman’s husband, Mike, and park Manager Dan Rockwood. It marked a collaboration The Texas Citrus Fiesta is excited to invite the public to join in a series of vibrant, family-friendly events celebrating one of Mission’s most cherished traditions this month. Kicking off the festivities is the Texas Citrus Fiesta Product Costume Show, where creativity takes center stage. This lively event gives participants the opportunity to showcase original costume designs inspired by Citrus Fiesta tradition and compete for a cash prize. The event will be held on Monday, January 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mission Event Center. We were able to be at the Ron Hoover Open House last week and met some wonderful Winter Texans. We also had drawings for Valley Star Awards tickets at the event. I was so happy to see y’all out there enjoying the sun, food and entertainment. There were many people I had the great opportunity to talk to, all of which showed their appreciation for the Winter Texan Times. We are always so very thankful for your words and knowing how much you are enjoying our paper. Many shared how they had already voted in the Valley Star Awards – so we are all looking forward to the show, and seeing who wins. When talking about the paper, one person used the word ‘advantageous,’ another talked about how the paper helps them decide where to go, and someone mentioned the abundance of stories. Annual Polka worship celebrates 30 years Our Savior Lutheran Church in McAllen will celebrate 30 years of having Winter Texans joining them in worshipping the Lord by singing polka melodies of familiar hymns. Previous events have included “Beer Barrel Polka” played to the words of the hymn “Come Let Us Worship,” and “The Happy Wanderer” to the hymn “He Lives.” The annual polka service, scheduled for Sunday, January 25 this year, has always been scheduled for the fourth Saturday in January. The date relates to the church calendar’s epiphany date. The popular service with the Winter Texans used to be held in the church gym with three services to accommodate as many as 1,400 members and visitors from other churches. The last few years, as it will be this year, it has been held in the sanctuary. The event will take place at 9:30 a.m. Our Savior Lutheran Church is located at 1105 W. Fern Ave., in McAllen. Resident and player Glyn Missingill, who was emcee for the dedication, noted that many residents had provided sweat equity, and donations of money. And Rockwood said all residents really are invested in the new courts. He asked those in the audience “to look and see what we accomplished.” Missingill said this is an amenity that the park needed, and which Brenda had claimed needed a home. Pickleball had been played on two courts in the main hall at Trophy Gardens starting in 2015, according to resident Fran Adams. But the hall also had to be shared for other activities to be held, limiting playing time. “The sport had become one of the most popular activities in the park, bringing residents together for exercise, social connection and fun,” Adams said. And along came an avid player, Brenda Keen, stating “We need our own outdoor pickleball courts.” Brenda had started playing on a court laid out with lines on a street in next door neighbor Winter Ranch RV Resort, her husband related. But she became the spark to the project, meeting with management and other players to begin raising money through fund-raising events and work projects on the courts. The Keens, originally from Arkansas, had been full time RVers since 2019 after selling off three businesses in pre-packaged foods, trailers and storage facility. While on the road they visited most states and more than 20 countries. They would stay four months at Trophy Gardens each winter. Mike had a brother living in the Valley and his parents had been Winter Texans here. After the ceremony several pairs of players demonstrated the sport on the two courts. Some more funds are still needed to fully complete the courts with benches for players and spectators, proper lighting for evening play and some overhead coverage. Although Brenda passed away suddenly in June of 2024, her vision is now a reality. We always enjoy your time with us, and our time with you, and we sure are going to miss it while you are gone. We know you are coming to the Valley for the community, the weather, lower prices, and more. We also know you are coming because of the culture and the warm welcomes you receive. But it is also your warmness that makes us love seeing you each year. Speaking of that warmness, you do so much for the communities you live in – whether it is for See THANK YOU pg. 18 Thank you for coming, safe travels, see you next season 2025 Winter Texan Fiesta. Photo by William Brunson By Herb Moering Hundreds of Winter Texans turned out Friday under picture perfect weather for the 49th annual Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso. The event to say “thanks” to all those who come to shop, eat, purchase medicines and have dental work done in Progreso began with a brief welcome in the Bridge Authority Building from Samuel Robert Sparks Jr., the private bridge co-owner, to various area government officials and spouses and special friends. See PROGRESO pg. 20 Tourists enjoy refreshments and entertainment in Progreso Members of both delegations and honored guests took a moment out to exchange greetings and have some photos taken to commemorate the 49th Annual Tourist Day 2025. Photo by Herb Moering This season has, once again, been a blast. We have a lot of fun when we are out and about with you, sharing your news, and hearing your stories. I had the opportunity to hear many stories this year. What you see in the paper is sometimes just a bit of what is shared. I keep learning how eager you are to help others, to be there for your friends, and to teach others how to do the same. It’s amazing to see the strength you have and watch you use your experiences to help the community you live in through service, teaching, and more. We always enjoy sharing the stories of community service you do for your park, and for organizations, schools, and churches in your community. We get to see how thankful and how full of gratitude everyone is for your service – whether it be through volunteer work, making something, donating food, or any of the other multitude of ways you find to fulfill the need.
