Thanks for coming to Texas! Winter Texan TIMES Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 39, No. 22 © 2026 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, March 25, 2026 By Barb Zanetti Photos by Dennis Zanetti Joining forces with others, Elaine Snyder helped Alamo Palms Resort and its Classy Quilter group become one of the top in the Valley – one quilter at a time. Many say it’s her welcoming efforts and those of other experienced quilters that are responsible for more than tripling the number of park quilters to 65. Elaine believes the projects the park’s experienced quilters choose and the way they teach it makes all the difference. “I like offering classes for beginners to experts,” Elaine says about the 10 different one’s seasoned quilters led this year. She says if she teaches them to make a special block, the quilters have choices of how and what they’d like to do with them such as creating a starter project like a wall hanging or a table runner. However, the key to getting and keeping so many new quilters interested is that Elaine never wants them to feel alone or that they’re “not good enough.” She insists that INDEX Coupon Index p 3 Events Calendar p 9 Reunions p 9 Parks Calendar p 10 WintertainersTM p 11 Business Guide p 16 Classifieds p 21 Taste of the Valley p 23 As it is with every season, it eventually must come to an end – and we hate to see it end, but we know we have next season to look forward to. We always enjoy your time with us, and our time with you, and we will surely miss you while you are gone. We know you are coming to the Valley for the community, the weather, the value and so much more. We also know you are coming because of the welcomeness you receive, but it is also your warmness that makes us love seeing you each year. As you will see in this issue, and you have seen in previous issues, you do so many things while in the Valley. You go dancing, participate in activities, continue your hobbies, and so much more. Most of all, you have fun. You also participate in your community. You find charities and people to bond with. And together, you contribute and donate so much time, and so much of yourself. Whether you make quilts, teddy bears, read a book, fundraise, or collect food items – you find something in your community to love, and they love you back for everything you do. MARCH 25, 2026 www.wintertexantimes.com 6 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Country Palms had a season of fun At Country Palms, there’s always something fun happening. Residents often gather in the clubhouse to enjoy card games and other casual games together. The park also offers a variety of scheduled activities, including Pool, Bean Bag Baseball, Cornhole, Bingo, and Horseshoes. Tuesday nights are always lively with the popular Jam Night, where friends come together for music and good times. Each month we host a community potluck, and throughout the year they celebrate holidays and other special events as a community. Inside the clubhouse you’ll also find a puzzle table for anyone who enjoys a good challenge, along with two dart boards that accept steel darts. The park regularly hosts dances and other entertainment events, and one of the highlights of the year is the annual community garage sale. Both delegations were large in number, which was far different from the first time in 1976 when just six people from the U.S. participated, according to Bobby Sparks, one of the bridge owners. He said Tourist Day was the idea of Arturo Serna, who talked five others into what has become a traditional jaunt. The first years the meetings were on a two-lane steel bridge, Sparks said, which was replaced by a concrete six-lane bridge built alongside the original one. A bridge for just trucks was added in 2018 on the east side, taking that heavy traffic around Nuevo Progreso in Mexico and around on the U.S. side to docks and a customs checkpoint. Prior to the walk officials from Progreso, Weslaco, Nuevo Progreso and Rio Bravo met in the Bridge Authority’s conference room, where Sparks thanked everyone for coming on a very nice spring day. Heading the U.S. delegation were Kip and Sharon Smith, selected as king and queen for the occasion after being nominated by the owner of the Red Snapper Restaurant in Progreso. The Smiths, from Missouri, have been Winter Texans for 24 years after some friends they met in Florida suggested they try Texas. They stay six months each year at Bit-OHeaven RV and MH Park in Donna. While here they like to dance, ride a motorcycle trike and participate in lots of park activities. Up north they live on a lake some 85 miles outside of St. Louis, where they keep busy and especially enjoy camping. The Smiths said this was their 23rd year of attending Tourist Day in the Mexico community. Also leading the U.S. delegation was Mr. Tourist 2026, Oscar Ivan Trevino, along with his wife, Cynthia. He is a singer and songwriter who is organizing an international tour later this year. One of the stops will be at the Bert Odgen Arena in Edinburg in September. Head of the Mexican delegation was Rio Bravo Mayor Lic.Migoel Angel and his wife, Almaraz. The event to say “thanks” to all those who come to shop, eat, purchase medicines and have dental work done in Progreso began with a brief welcome in the Bridge Authority Building from Samuel Robert Sparks Jr., the private bridge co-owner, to various area government officials and spouses and special friends. I had the opportunity to hear many stories this year. What you see in the paper is sometimes just a bit of what is shared. I keep learning how eager you are to help others, to be there for your friends, and to teach others how to do the same. It’s amazing to see the strength you have and watch you use your experiences to help the community you live in through service, teaching, and more. We always enjoy sharing the stories of community service you do for your park, and for organizations, schools, and churches in your community. We get to see how thankful and how full of gratitude everyone is for your service – whether it be through volunteer work, making something, donating food, or any of the other multitude of ways you find to fulfill the need. Currently, 40 million Americans, about 12% of the population, are living with diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while 115 million more have prediabetes, an elevated blood sugar condition that often progresses to type 2 diabetes without timely intervention. In South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley is facing an escalating diabetes crisis, with diagnosis rates far exceeding both state and national averages. Recent estimates indicate that 25% to more than 43% of adults across the four county region have type 2 diabetes, an alarming reality driven by widespread risk factors such as obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol. “Diabetes isn’t just a health statistic in the Valley, it’s a daily struggle affecting families in every neighborhood,” says Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing and Public Relations, South Texas Health System (STHS). “It affects the physical and mental health and overall well being of families and the future of our region. Addressing this crisis requires urgency, collaboration and a firm commitment to early detection and prevention.” While diabetes can often be prevented through healthy eating and regular physical activity, it’s essential to understand the risk factors, recognize the warning signs and learn the best practices for effectively managing the condition. To help educate and empower Valley residents to take steps to prevent, delay or manage diabetes, STHS is partnering with Prominence Health to host its annual Prevent, Treat & Beat Diabetes Symposium, a family friendly conference and expo offering educational seminars, interactive exercise and cooking demonstrations, and level of care health assessments and screenings to help the community stay on top of their health. “Raising diabetes awareness begins with making sure every individual living with or at risk for this life threatening condition has the support and resources they deserve,” says Castañeda. “This annual symposium underscores the urgent, proactive work STHS and Prominence Health are doing to empower our communities with life saving education, highlight the serious dangers of diabetes and reinforce how early detection can dramatically reduce the risk of severe health complications.” Taking place on Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Texas College Health Science Professions Campus (Building B), located at 1901 S. McColl Rd. in McAllen, the symposium will feature more than a dozen educational seminars led by local healthcare professionals in English and Spanish, along with interactive cooking and exercise demonstrations, which are all designed to equip attendees with the tools they need to prevent, treat and beat diabetes through healthy lifestyle choices, effective risk factor management and more. The free conference is open to the public and will include a special expo offering no cost health checks and screenings, along with information on locally available resources to help Valley residents fight diabetes.
