February 14, 2024 - Reunions and Meetings

Reunions are a great time to catch up with friends, old and new. Here we will feature reunions and meetings that are happening throughout the Valley. We hope that if you are having such a meeting, you will send the information to us so we can help you spread the word.

Right now, there are several meetings already taking place. Red Hatters are getting together on at least a monthly basis. If you would like to share your information, please send it in. If you have a great photo from your reunion or meeting, we would love to see that too.

Senior Slow Pitch Softball

The Senior Slow Pitch Softball group has started practicing. You must be 55 years young and over. They practice at the sports park on Ware and I2, across from the Convention Center. All games are in the morning on Tuesday and Thursday or Monday and Wednesday depending on what group you are in. There will be gloves and bats to use. Ladies welcome. RGV Woodcarvers

Model Rail Roading & Railroaders

Caterpillar Retiree Reunion

Through February 24 – The Hidalgo Watercolor Society presents “Water Works.” At the Upper Valley Art League. The Upper Valley Art League Gallery, 921 E. 12th St, Mission. UVAL Gallery hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The UVAL Gallery is free and open to the public. (956) 591-0282.

Through February 25 – The PSJA ISD Buell Central Discipline Alternative Education Program students’ artwork, Screen It: Youth Identity through Art, will be featured at IMAS. The museum is located at 1900 W. Nolana Ave. in McAllen.

Through March 31 – IMAS will host the exhibit Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight which illuminates the unique landscape and helps curious minds to understand the natural processes that formed south Texas. The museum is located at 1900 W. Nolana Ave. in McAllen.

Through April 28 – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) will be hosting México: Crisis and Uprising, an exhibition that brings together the diverse voices of 34 independent artists from the North of Mexico. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Regular admission is $5 with discounted $3 for children ages 4-12, students with an ID and senior citizens 65+. February 6-11 – The Winter Wildlife Expo will be held at the SPI Hilton Garden Inn. The week will be filled with guest speakers, field trips, raptor shows, exhibitors, vendors and more. February 9 – Brownsville History Museum will host their Winter Walking Tour: St. Charles District at 11 a.m. Meet at the Historic Brownsville Museum, 641 E. Madison St. Cost is $10 for BHA members and $15 for non-members. RSVP by calling (956) 548-1313. Visitors will explore one of the most historic neighborhoods in Brownsville. February 10 – The Women of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will hold their “Super Bowl” Bake Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be soups, chili, cakes, pies, breads, cookies, and more. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Bereavement Center in the Rio Grande Valley. The church is located at 1417 W. Austin, in Harlingen.

February 16-17 – The RGV Quilt Guild will be hosting their quilt show at the South Padre Island Convention Center, 7355 Padre Blvd. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. Admission is $10 a day or $15 for both days. There will be a silent auction, quilts for sale, door prizes, shopping and more. You can purchase tickets online. February 17 – The 4th Annual Rockabilly Rumble will be held at 5x5 Brewing Co. from 12 to 11 p.m. Along with the car show, there will be a pin-up contest, entertainment by Gatos Locos, and an award for the best dressed couple (Rockabilly, 40, 50s era). There will also be food, great drinks, door prizes, and automotive vendors. 5x5 Brewing Co. is located at 801 Bryan Rd. in Mission.

Masonic Winter Texan Reunion

The 43rd Annual MN/TX Masonic Reunion will be held on Saturday, February 3, at the Rio Grande Valley Shrine Club, 13415 E Expressway 83 in La Feria. January 4-31 – The Art of Quilting at Weslaco Museum. Join the museum for an exquisite showcase of vintage and contemporary quilts from the museum’s collection. Whether you are a seasoned quilter or simply appreciate the beauty of the craft, this exhibition is not to be missed. Exhibit can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is located at 500 S. Texas Blvd.

January 6 – March 31 – IMAS will host the exhibit Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight which illuminates the unique landscape and helps curious minds to understand the natural processes that formed south Texas. Along with the exhibit, a viewing of the documentary will be shown at 3 p.m. on February 3. The museum is located at 1900 W. Nolana Ave. in McAllen.

January 24 – McAllen Main Library on 23rd and Nolana will host Enclosing the Fictions – Sorting Through the History and Distortions of the Holocaust, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Join J.E. Wolfson, PhD, State Coordinator of Education of the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission as he discusses the history and misconceptions of the Holocaust.
