20180201 Gordy Header3The nominees appearing on this year’s Valley Star Awards ballot were chosen by activity directors at their first meeting of the year. Some people have wondered why Leslie Blasing and Gordy & Debbie are not on the ballot this year. Blasing announced at last year’s awards presentation that she wanted to remove her name from eligibility this year to allow other entertainers an opportunity to receive the award. She was voted Female Vocalist of the year for five straight years, and had also been named Entertainer of the Year previously. Gordy and Debbie agreed. They are six-time winners of the Valley Star Awards Duet Musical Group of the Year. Consequently, a new rule was established whereby those entertainers who receive one of the Valley Star Awards five times will not be eligible for future ballots.

“There are so many wonderful entertainers performing in the Rio Grande Valley and we wanted to give some of the newer acts a chance to be recognized,” said Robert Ferguson, producer of the Valley Star Awards.

At this year’s awards show, Ferguson will present awards to the Rio Grande Valley’s top entertainers as selected by Winter Texans casting their votes for their favorite Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Individual/Small Band/Variety Act of the Year, Musical Group of the Year (not related), Gospel Group of the Year, Duet Musical Group of the Year, Family Vocal Group of the Year, Rock-n-Roll Band of the Year, Novelty or Comedy Act of the Year, Country Western Band of the Year and Entertainer/Group of the Year.

The Valley Star Awards ballot was printed in the Winter Texan Times and also published online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Balloting ended Tuesday and folks are anxious to find out who the winners will be. To find out, come to this year’s awards show where top entertainers will perform between awards presentations.

Tickets for the show can be purchased at Casa Del Valle, 1048 N. Alamo Road, Alamo; or at Winter Texan Times, 1217 N. Conway Ave., Mission. To order tickets by phone, call (865) 253-2514.
